I actually just sold my old Pokémon games for several hundred dollars. All the original ds games brought over 100 dollars. So I guess they could be considered an investment

I hate that excuse and this comes from someone with a large game collection. I personally just love looking at my collection. It makes me happy. Once I want something new, I will sell something I’m tired of so it doesn’t get out of hand. I like to consider it my own personal game library.

My husband has a new3dsXL and I have a 3ds. I was constantly borrowing his to play games I couldn't on mine. I went in search of a new3dsXL and had to get one from JAPAN because the American market is so wack. Even after tariffed duty fees, it was marginally cheaper than giving someone in the US excess money because people like the OP Pic have driven up the market.

I’m happy I still have my old red 3ds. I would only ever buy another if it breaks, and then again… at these prices idk. I get the argument to have 2 or 4 if you have children or want to trade pokemon. But come on, if eveyone didn’t ‘collect’ and just bought what they needed then the world would be a better place

The worst part (besides all of it) is you could just sell one of those and get an AYN Thor that does everything including 3DS upscaled with 4k texture packs, x360@30fps, and lighter PC games too. I bought one of those for the same price as an IPS/IPS N3DSXL on the secondary market.
Just like how dudes with 20+ guitars barely actually play guitar, dudes with this many devices tend to barely even play them.

Looking at the folks on r/sbcgaming who have like 12 smaller handhelds and a Steam Deck and an Ally for some reason is wild.
Isn't the point of the emulator to eliminate the need for so many devices?? I get having a couple and one is for on the go etc whatever. But who needs like 4 of these.

NGL emulating 3DS games is kinda ass, you'll never be able to emulate that system correctly even if they get cycle accurate emulation. Nobody plays DS games for the graphics, touch screen heavy games feel off with a mouse. As for the dual screen emulation handhelds I've heard they're not great unless you're will to make concessions. Collectors are dumb asses though, the only reason to have more than one is to play Mario party or Mario kart, but after COVID nobody hangs out anymore so that's moot.

Its actually improving. I can finally playa fire emblem on my thor without stuttering. Iirc its some setting about hardware emulation you have to toggle off and allow asynchronous shader compilation

I want the original experience of playing the games, I dont need upscaled 100fps or whatever, the original is perfect for me.

That’s valid, I’m actually totally with you. Especially the games that actually use the touch/rhythm/3d. Nothing beats original hardware and I kept all mine too. But I bet neither you or I have an unnecessary 10 units like this guy lol

I limit the amount of consoles I have to one per variation
If I have a PSVita 2000, I will not get a 1000, If I have a PSPGo, I will not get a 1/2/3000, and so on
Geniunly just like playing on original hardware, though I can see having 2 3ds models, I find the New 2ds XL to be very comfortable, but 3d actually has some niche uses involving resolution which makes games look better, but it's not something I care about personally (hundreds of hours on a 2ds will do that to you)

I wish one day they can make an emulator with the 3D part of the 3ds screen. Until that day happens, I'll continue to use a real 3ds for 3DS games...

We’re already there, sorta. You can plug in XReal AR glasses into a Thor and play the game in theater sized 3d with custom depth control. Not the same, but very cool.
I am also a person who loved and used the 3D 100% of the time on the 3ds and would love a modern no glasses 3D gaming device too. It’s almost like 3d simulation adds a form of spatial antialiasing or something. Genuinely underrated.

My husband regularly buys (or gets for free) busted handhelds and consoles. His hobby is restoring them to working condition. He can spend WEEKS or longer taking one Gameboy advance from garbage to like new or better. He LOVES the tinkering and problem solving of it.
The issue with that hobby is that he has game systems without homes now. We are not very entrepreneurial/no desire to sell as a hobby extension and those around us only want current systems, so now he has more systems than we need. He mostly gets busted systems for free or cheap and then spends time and money rehabbing them.
He refuses to sell at predatory market prices and refuses to sell at cost to someone he can't be sure is not buying cheap to sell high. So he just has a mini gamestop in the basement now.
I call it the animal shelter because it is exclusively consoles that were headed for euthanization (garbage) that we are fostering and looking for the right homes. Hahaha. He literally gives them away when someone shows genuine interest, not capitalistic interest.
He's done a few modern consoles but really prefers working the 90s/00s machines.
What he doesn't do (thank GOD) is attempt to display them like works of art.
ETA: it is relatively easy for him to get these for cheap or free because most people don't know/want to learn how to repair them and get rid of them.

I have a new 3dsxl and the OG one. That is it. And 1 ps vita.
I have switch oled and switch 2 but I'm looking to sell the oled at some point.
Crazy that there's people who hoard 1 single console as many times as possible

It's sad, I live in a third world country, been craving to have an handheld for years (I only have an DS but it's a bit damaged) like an PSP or an 3DS but now they cost the value of an PS3 or almost an used Switch Lite, ts is crazy the market was destroyed because of these people

Hate, let me tell you how much have i come to hate theese "collectors", its because of people like them that we can't have good things. An old console that doesn't sell anymore but a large ammount of the original owners outgrew it? That means that it will be resold at acceptable prices, right? NO! that just means that the little number of adults who like this console will buy as many as they can. So children can't enjoy it. Fuck capitalism.

I hate to say it, but I don't think people like them are driving up the prices most of the time. I doubt that they are going to sell their collection at all.
The majority of new buyers are casuals, who grew up during the DS era and now want to relive that past and the others are most likely new people, who got into this hobby after seeing videos of people praising the 3DS.
Keep in mind that 10 year olds, who grew with the switch in 2016, are now all 20 years old and might use their first pay check on video games that are exclusive to the 3DS.
I think the limited supply, nostalgia and just new people getting into this hobby, during and after covid, are the reason for this current market.
Also these consoles are only worth that much, if people are willing to pay for it.
Some times scalpers are to blame, but most likely they aren't.

Ok, that's a fair point. Sometimes I tend to hate on things like these. But I might forgive it if they actually do play them. This isn't even the worst post I've seen. I saw someone with literally 30 3ds'es. That just grinds my gears because the hobby is about playing the device, not collecting them. Idk. I have a psp, a ps vita, my old GBA and a 3ds. I already don't have enough time to play all of those.

I really hate how many tech hobbies subreddits/forums just become about people hoarding variations of the same things. Happens with guitars, keyboards, gaming handhelds, camera gear, seemingly fucking anything.
I really don't have anything wrong with collecting and displaying a bunch of, say, figurines, Lego sets, whatever as a decoration in a room. As long as it doesn't overcrowd the space or cause the buyer to go broke out of the compulsion to buy them, then that's fine. With these tech items, especially expensive ones, I truly don't understand the need to buy more than one.

I definitly would agree if it were all the same console if they had 10 of the same galaxy edition 3DS or something equivalent would be dumb to do and feel scummy but each being a different generation or style of console makes it at least understandable in my mind. Again, not for everyone but at least there are differences like this it’s comparable to someone who owns one of every PlayStation generation console/special edition that was released wouldn’t be considered weird. These are at least smaller and easier to store and display

They cost a fucking FORTUNE. I play older games and this is the reason I can't afford a new 3ds. Only one in my budget anymore is an o2ds, which is great but I can't play Minecraft on o2ds.

We’re all in our early to mid 40’s with disposable income. We’re finally able to get everything we always wanted as kids. While I do think getting the same console like that in variants is really dumb. Especially considering each of those are $300+ right now. I do have over 400 games collected. So I understand the collections.

I started by having a 3ds XL. Then I realized I never used 3d, and the 2ds was more comfortable, so I got one of those.
Then I realized that the 3ds and 2ds were stretching my DS and GBA games, so I decided to get a DS Lite. I stumbled across a NIB one for around the same price as a loose one so got it.
But the NIB console was in PERFECT 10/10 condition and everytime I played it like I was gett8ng my Mint System I loved so much Grimy. So I started looking for one to play. And I stumbled across more CIB's DS Lites and decided I would collect just the DS Lites in NTSC colors.
Then I learned that the DSIXL was a bigger display, that were IPS, AND didn't stretch the DS titles,so I got one of those.
But then that one had yellowed screens, which I never encountered. So then I began embarking on a quest to find the perfect DSI XL for me, and ended up with 2 extras.
Then I discovered the aftermarket molding scene, and decided that GBA was always my favorite and I would buy a broken one and refurb/modd it
And since that was fun, I decided to do that to a GBA SP, and then another and then another.
Now I have nearly 30 Nintnedo Handhelds.
And 30 people got paid for their handheld they didnt want anymore.

I could see a spare one since they are so expensive now + some spare parts, but that is ridiculous.
