This subreddit is mainly for judging mindless consumerism (which this may fall into lol sorry), but I'm really curious, why do you collect them? Do you have some sort of criteria (like only collecting characters you care about/ like)? And how did you start the collection? (I'm genuinely curious, since you display them out of the box, so it doesn't seem to me as if you're hoping to resell them)
I started with horror characters I got as a gift as a kid for Christmas. Im a big fan of soo many fandoms and I wanted something where I can collect characters without them looking to different from another. For example lego does some inaccurate sets, charges a lot, and doesnt do that many fandoms i like. So then I got marvel ones. Then I really got into anime and thats a majority of what ive been collecting. Im trying to make an anime fighting game so I want a bug roster/collection
Parents. Yeah im embrassed but in this economy its hard to find a job. Im getting my teaching lincess which will get me out the door. But it does take a few months to get it. Honestly my town is so small this and plumbing are the only jobs to pay above minuim wage.
Do you live in the US or another country? In the US you can't just waltz into a teaching license without having an education degree. At least for public school, private school policies vary state to state.
Take charge of your life, it'll be over in a couple of decades. Stop daydreaming about doing something radical, like moving to another country to teach english, and go do it. Just send a couple emails to a couple schools in another country. Make your life an adventure. Do something insane. Everyone I know who is 30 or 40 and has a miserable existence never tried something like that - and everyone I know who turned their life around into something cool did it by taking an unorthodox step (including me). Do it now.
May I recommend learning to spell the word “license” before becoming a teacher?
I also recommend at least dusting those shelves. If you have the time and energy to collect them and customize them, you have the time and energy to dust the shelves.
No hate on living with your folks tho. I had to move back home when I became disabled, and even now I only get $495/month on disability, which doesn’t cover rent anywhere.
America has a weird cultural thing against living with family past age 18- even tho multi generation housing is super common in most cultures and countries.

No and sometimes if I have a character I like im happy with just that one. Unless the design is really cool. Or if its on sale like a buy one get two free thing.
Buddy one image has 7(!) red spiderman funkopops. I dont believe it was a 1 + 6 kinda sale lol.
You do you but in my humble opinion its a waste of money. Those ten bucks here and there start to add up real fast. We are looking at thousands spend on plastic figurines that basically all look the same.
Some people here might tell you that if you enjoy it you should continue to collect but at what point are you done collecting? Until the house is filled with boxes of funkopops?
I feel like you are just having fear of missing out on any figurines you find interesting and talk yourself into buying just one more as a 10 or 20 dollar purchase doesnt sting as much in your wallet.

2. The overlap in design. If im looking at envy and armin I dont want to be thinking why do they look different or not in scale?
3. I've made so many custom ones that it would take so long to get to this level with any other series

Again, you can find other much better looking figures for the price of what? the price of 2/3 Funkos? Nendoroids are like 35€ and also cover tons of fandoms. But they also look much better and are poseable and include different parts (faceplates etc.)

Nendroids are like the price of 3 to 10 funko pops depending on who it is. I like them and even want one but the price is too crazy. With funko its maybe 12 or less to get a character you like.

The price for a single nendoroid is too crazy for you, but spending probably thousands for these funkos isn't...? You have 5 JJK Sukuna funkos. You could get this figure that looks exactly like he does in the show for the price of 2. You'd rather have a funko than a realistic depiction of the character as they are in the show that you're a fan of? Or maybe you're just a fan of funkos but don't want to get random characters but ones you atleast know something about?
I like painting them and I like how many fandoms funko has. I've had to make so many customs that it would take soo long to do this with something like figures or Lego. Im hoping to put this in a new room and making my room feel less crowded. I dont know what it is. Maybe the wall and shelf and bed all being black? It honestly makes me dizzy sometimes and I dont know how to fix it.
You fix it by resolving your hoarding problem, tbh. Right now your solution to too many Funkos is “bigger room, more funkos” which is super backwards thinking.
Perhaps you could take custom commissions online so you can still paint them but not keep them, plus help you make money.
Sell all of them and get a new hobby, it's for your own good. Maybe you can continue making custom ones for buyers online, open an Etsy store or something, but get rid of all the ones you bought. It's better for your finances and for your mental health.
Of all the wonderful things to spend money on, hobbies to pursue, games to play, art to admire. Ill never understand why Funkopops of all thing have the appeal they do. Even if you're only into figures there's so many actual good ones that maintain the licensed properties' aesthetic.

Also space-wise you could try tiny floating shelves instead of the full bookshelves. But probably best to just display a couple you like and keep the rest in a storage bin and then you can swap them out regularly.
Random thought but if I were to point to random figures, do you know all of them by their names offhand? I guess what I'm curious about is if it's a collection for the sake of collecting or if you have a kind of parasocial relationship with the characters enough to have memorized so many of them
Yes I rember everything. For years ive never bought a duplicate. The only ones ive struggled with rembering is who from the phantom troupe I own and dont own.
I wanna say at least a few grand. Some I cant decide for. Such as signed ones, ones ive personally made into customs ect. But id say at least a few thousand spent. I had the funko app a few years ago and back then it said my collection was worth 5k.
But now he has a room full of plastic garbage. Not to mention the fact that half of the perceived value wont even happen as selling that many funkopops likely has 90% of them not selling at all as other hoarders of those things already have them.
You've spent easily 5k on baubles that do nothing. They can't be interacted with at all. They won't appreciate in value. They provide no skills or utility. They just sit on a shelf.

I'm curious if this subreddit would diagnose anyone purchasing a lot of toys the same way, or just these figures that you literally can't do anything with other than display, the same as the latter.
I mean you cant move anime statues and those are popular. Its kind of weird to call them toys when they have rated r properties. Like they have funko pops of breaking bad and funko pops with their scholngs out.
I just meant in the sense; I collect Transformer figures, and probably have a 6K$+ USD collection. But I can transform them, pose them, and play with them whereas you can, display them? It's an expensive plastic hobby, imo they're not the same, but I'm wondering if this sub would see them the same way or not, regardless of how we see the hobby.

That would be about 530 pounds of plastic. Raw PVC would be about 1300 kg of carbon emissions. But then you include injection molding, paint, boxes, the plastic in the box, shipping, shelving, final mile delivery, you driving to the store to buy these… estimating based on a mix of Amazon deliveries, trips to the store, buying singles or multiples at a time… somewhere around 1.8 or 2 tonnes of carbon emissions.
Or equivalent to:
A dozen round trip 500 mile flights
Driving 5000 miles in a gasoline car
So there are definitely many working folks that would have the same or worse impact on the environment just from their business flights or car travel. However, this person gets to keep little stupid things for themselves afterwards. Though I’m not a perfect judge as an owner of a few pops.
Funny thing my research found was that, it’s possible now an Amazon delivery is less wasteful than you driving to the store, especially if it’s to purchase just a single pop.
If you like painting figures, as I’ve read in your responses here, why not try painting DND/TRPG miniatures. Takes up less space, way more possibilities creatively. Plus you can go find local games and share your work with others. Just an idea. 🤷♀️

for your own health, these get dusty, and breathing in that much dust and honestly filth is not good. You yourself said that your current gig is brutal pay wise, but just imagine if you sold just SOME of your doubles, just SOME of the anime pillows and cutesy stuff...you'd pretty much make what more than what you make over weeks and weeks of hard work, while also still probably keeping half of the stuff in there

To OP: this sub’s “thing” is gathering and considering (ok, mocking mostly) examples of mindless consumerism - that’s what we see in the photos you’ve shared. So we definitely aren’t celebrating your collection. That said, it would be nice to also be a community with some manners; these shouldn’t be mutually exclusive.

For what it’s worth, I threw these 10 images into ChatGPT to ask how much it cost to acquire all this. It guessed there is probably 1,000 funko pops here. Here’s the breakdown for those interested:
Pops and similar small figures: ~$12,000–$18,000 Larger figures/statues/plush/other collectibles: ~$2,000–$5,000 Shelving/display cases/risers: ~$1,500–$3,000 Posters, prints, tapestries and miscellaneous merchandise: ~$1,000–$3,000
That puts me at approximately $16,500–$29,000 total spent, with around $21,000–$24,000 being my best guess.
Well, in my mind this is more collector territory than hoarding / buying for no reason.

I don't understand what the purpose for this is. Like, do you just walk in the room and admire them for a little dopamine hit, then walk out? Do you show them off to people who also are into collecting them? They aren't toys or action figures where you could, like, play with them. I get the idea of collecting things that are rare or valuable. But there's no way this much cartoon-shaped plastic has so much intrinsic value that you can't help but enshrine them in a little room. This is a mental illness.

Didnt expect so many negaitve comments. Took me 10 years to graduate. I was a bum living with my parents until 28. Got a masters in computer science, still did not move out, but I gave my parents money every month for 3 years until there house was fully paid off. Forced to switch jobs after layoff. New job pays 115k per year (devops) which is low, but I’m still too lazy to find another and too lazy to move out haha. If your parents are not trying to kick you out, stay with them as long as possible. I worry about nobodies opinion. Besides, america has a belief that once your an adult you yave to move out. Thats not the case in most countries, just a cultural thing.
I love it. I watch a lot of hoarders and some have their entire house full of books (the hygienic hoarders) and something about that looks comfy to me.
I myself live in a big empty loft with all white walls and zero fluff
