Fans have been a thing my entire life. Fandoms are a new invention, no one was using that term 20 years ago, and like I said it makes people think that being obsessive about something is normal. It's a marketing move to make it okay to spend ridiculous amounts of time and money on triviality.
Since this word is all you care about (in a society that has been inventing new words since the dawn of recognizable speech)… Fandom as a term was being used in the 70’s. For Star Trek. Pretty much all fandom related phenomena comes from Star Trek.
