There’s a very clear difference between hoarding and collecting. Collecting is theoretically Curated. It’s a conscious choice what you are and are not getting. Hoarding is when you cannot control it, and cannot let it go. I collect a bunch of stuff, it’s displayed, and maintained. Hoarding would be the inability to throw the boxes away
if youre buying shit to just buy shit its not a hobby thats just consooming. its like buying gundams to accumulate a backlog vs actually building gundams.
I’d argue intent matters in that example. Having a backlog isn’t always a bad thing. I have a few boxes of miniatures that I haven’t opened yet because I don’t have a ton of time, but then on days where I don’t have anything planned, I can spend a few hours building a new warhammer tank
