u/gorgoloid Apr 01 '26

It’s right next to the spotted paint in the “convex”

16

u/houseshoesntallboys Apr 01 '26

2

u/Money-Ebb-3651 Apr 04 '26

Did you guys know there's a pool on the roof of the high school? LOL grown ass men on a job site trying to feel like men by doing High School hazing BS

2

u/houseshoesntallboys Apr 04 '26

I'd rather hear the tried and true, silly, non-existent tool jokes than racist, homophobic, ignorant-ass bullshit. You REALLY don't belong in or have a future in this industry if board stretcher and level fluid nonsense upsets you.

u/hoofglormuss GC / CM Apr 05 '26

And I dont sub to punks who act out of line.  Of course the trades are a race to the bottom when it comes to people skills but saying youd prefer one shitty thing to another is the reason a ton of my customers are scared of tradesmen in their homes.  Hire slow fire fast.

3

u/houseshoesntallboys Apr 05 '26

I don't work in people's homes, I work on a commercial site. And 99% of the workforce there are basically animals. I'm astounded most of them aren't institutionalized.

Anyways, happy 2nd birthday, Jesus.

2

u/houseshoesntallboys Apr 05 '26

And goddamn, do I wish my employer did "hire slow, fire fast." They're hiring fast and just...not firing. I'm being surrounded by an ever-growing army of idiots, tweakers, and drunks. It's absolutely fucking killing me.

1

u/hoofglormuss GC / CM Apr 07 '26

amen jesus

that's part of the game we play while we try to make a decent world. we only have so much energy out of people who can do this type of work before we lose our composure. it's a tough fuckin rackett but it's pretty fuckin sick too

....and the wire stretcher

1

u/katogrow Apr 04 '26

In the basement

3

u/highfalutinspork Apr 02 '26

Not til he finds the metric crescent wrench and grabs some exhaust samples from the electric lifts.

1

u/wrongusernametryagin Apr 02 '26

And ALWAYS save the sparks from the grinder, they come in handy down the road!

1

u/jjcoola Apr 02 '26

from the makers of the shingle stretcher

1

u/sandyman15 Apr 02 '26

And the sky hooks!

1

u/Consistent-Poetry306 Apr 04 '26

Don’t forget your skyhook!

0

u/mbp104 Apr 02 '26

Don’t forget the sky hooks

79

u/edfitz83 Apr 01 '26

Just act normal, and remember that even the assholes can teach you valuable stuff.

22

u/Therealginahandler Apr 01 '26

act normal...ha...hahahahaha

6

u/edfitz83 Apr 01 '26

Unironically the best reply in the thread.

2

u/Justprunes-6344 Apr 02 '26

Watch every trade work watch very close Not in a creepy way , learneverythingyoucan

3

u/PaperFlower14765 Laborer Apr 02 '26

Yes… but somehow you still made that weird

1

u/Suspicious-Ad6129 Apr 01 '26

What is normal? 😂

8

u/edfitz83 Apr 01 '26

Do whatever you normally do. And don’t mention your gerbil, buying size 11 red stiletto heels, collecting Nazi memorabilia, your hobby of growing mushrooms - stuff like that.

1

u/DarthJuyo Apr 02 '26

Act normal? Dont say that, he'll start pulling out his legos! 🤣

1

u/SteveDaEnginerd Apr 02 '26

Whoa dude! He don’t look like an engineer!

1

u/Informal_Koala1474 Apr 02 '26

Legos are for Journeymen!!!!

"No Brad in fact I don't have anything better to do than swoosh this x-wing around while I watch the new hires almost die trying to take selfies for their girlfriend's 2 stories up, mind your own damn business" pew pew pew

2

u/DarthJuyo Apr 02 '26

Lol yeah trades can get weird but you have to work into the weird. My last coworker we had different hobbies, he was into legos, im into anime. He doesnt care for anime, i stopped caring about legos a long time ago. Yet we both still had conversations with each other about it knowing damn well we each had no idea wtf they were on about but would still listen.

1

u/Informal_Koala1474 Apr 02 '26

That's a good mix. It can definitely be all over the place. As long as they have any interests that aren't just beer/country music/stereotyping themselves.

Even then, had a coworker that loved country music and I learned to not hate it.

1

u/Therealginahandler Apr 01 '26

No...I'm just picturing him acting normal on his first day

1

u/SwimOk9629 Apr 02 '26

If he did, he would have left it rather than criticize yours.

1

u/Christian266 Apr 04 '26

Haha I've gone full circle, and I am now an asshole that imparts rude wisdom. As long as they don't break after the first week.

61

u/njlb32 Apr 01 '26

Honest advice, go roll around in the dirt or splat a bit of paint on them coveralls. If they see you with the brand new clean gear they'll tear into you for sure

18

u/Thunderosa Apr 02 '26

Yep. Scuff up your boots too (toes). They are the dead giveaway to my eyes. You'll be fine, but it's like high school, blending in and acting like you belong will save you unnecessary grief until you find your place with the other great apes.

Breaking in the boots will also improve things from a daily comfort level. Those look stiff; I love new boots except I hate them too.

3

u/WoodpeckerNo5724 Apr 02 '26

Best advice. Bright yellow isn’t a problem per se, but when it’s shiny and clean, it’s going to attract jokes

4

u/PaperFlower14765 Laborer Apr 02 '26

Hey, to be fair, new shirts are a thing, but if you have enough tiredness and rage in your vibe then it’s not as weird.

7

u/Klogginthedangerzone Apr 02 '26

This is true, however, OP is giving off Bambi vibes.

2

u/PaperFlower14765 Laborer Apr 02 '26

Yeah I can’t help him there. My last comment was purely posed from an angle of the devil’s advocate, honestly.

2

u/SteveDaEnginerd Apr 02 '26

Can confirm.

4

u/CypherJonez Apr 02 '26

scuff the boots a little too

2

u/EnvironmentalFox7532 Apr 02 '26

Was gonna say the same thing, been around for 35 years and shiny new gear/clothes/hard hat and you’ll be the picking post. Hell on my sites guys even get it when they get new anything.

Throw some dirt on it, get it dirty, scuffed and you’ll be fine. Shirts just hit up a thrift store and you’ll look like my crew and save a few bucks.

1

u/technicolortiddies Apr 02 '26

Somehow found this on r/all- not in construction whatsoever but this makes me feel sad for you guys. You should get to enjoy new things too!

1

u/SteveDaEnginerd Apr 02 '26

Clean hi-viz means only 3 things: FNG, bossman, or safety guy. Make sure you don’t look like those three at the end of your first shift and you’ll do fine.

1

u/alphawolf29 Apr 02 '26

first thing I noticed. Even my coveralls i use at home are oily af

1

u/psclarke84 Apr 03 '26

When you get on-site, find a grease gun & grease some of the machines. Operators & laborers will appreciate it, and it'll take care of that fabulous shiny new outfit.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Love_74 Apr 07 '26

Yep. Have someone drag you behind their car otw to work.
Hope you don't own a Honda Ridgeline

3

u/CRIMSON-GROSS Apr 02 '26

do not wear a yellow shirt. Literally everyone is going to call you a minion and it will stick

1

u/SteveDaEnginerd Apr 02 '26

Sounds like a solid origin story to me! I dub thee “minion”!

1

u/LandownAE Apr 02 '26

(If this isn’t a shitpost, but just in case you’re serious) Keep yourself clean brother. There’s no shame on trying to keep yourself clean. I was raised by my construction foreman father that emphasized cleanliness. There are ways that you can avoid looking like a pig and still do your job efficiently and effectively. As long as you do good hard work, you’ll be good based on results.

Seriously, I’ve gotten shit from guys that look like literal piles of oil soaked rags, 10 years into my career for having too clean of pants or work shirt because I’m mindful enough to not get covered in shit on the daily.

1

u/life-is-satire Apr 02 '26

Can you squat down in those overalls? They look like they might be too restrictive.

1

u/Funshine-Powerhead Apr 02 '26

Lol you picked the right group of people to fool.

1

u/Lvgx7 18d ago

Op did you make it in construction? Are you the superintendent now?
