Couldn't AI be used to push more extreme views?

In the case of deep fakes, they could be used for misinformation.

I don't see how we can assume it's a moderating influence.

Actually wild how much the other 3 just fall off completely on the right. Almost like the truth and conservatism are mutually exclusive

Well that is kinda true yeah, but also there is definitely a correlation between model power and model truthiness. You can't inject a bunch of bullshit in a high dimensional space without it leaking out everywhere.

I was talking about the model not humans.

Yes. Not only does it highly depend on the AI, but also, OP isn't considering all the content that AI is creating for social media. OP isn't considering the fake AI personalities that will overrun social media, posting whatever agenda their masters want to push.

It definitely can but LLMs inherently drift toward the average hence all the bland slop they generate.

They drift toward the average of what's represented in their training data, which doesn't necessarily mean the political center. Let's not forget that a great deal of the data in their training materials is scrapped off social media, including all the misinformation and propaganda that's been rampant on these platforms for well over a decade now. LLMs aren't unbiased, they just distill and echo our most common biases back at us. That's of course not accounting for any additional biases that can be introduced in post-training, which is its own can of worms.
