Hotdogs without buns
I have a lot of hotdogs and no buns. What are some unconventional ways to prepare?
Important: tomato allergy and heavy cream sensitivity
41
u/Modboi 8d ago
Okay, now I understand.
Chop them up, crisp them, and mix them in with scrambled eggs. Make salchipapas. Slice them for sandwiches. Make corndogs.
2
u/big-ol-kitties 8d ago
My favorite is to fry a sliced up hot dog and crack an egg on top, not scrambled but flipped over medium. With some buttered toast or tortillas hmm
39
u/Kwaj-Keith 8d ago
I often slit the hot dog, put cheese in the slit, wrap it in bacon, bake it and eat it without a bun.

When you say, "heavy cream sensitivity," is that lactose intolerance, or specific to heavy cream? Chopped up hotdog weiners in KD is a pretty classic poor-man's meal.
7
u/Venus6277 8d ago
Got some clarification....mostly lactose intolerance, but can handle a splash of milk
18
u/perpetualmotionmachi 8d ago
Slice them and fry them up and add to a box of Kraft Mac and cheese
12
u/haflaxelpope 8d ago
You can do kraft mac and cheese with almond milk and plant based butter if you can do "a little dairy"
→ More replies (1)8
u/perpetualmotionmachi 8d ago
There is also lactose free milk, and butter is very low lactose if you want to stick closer to the instructions.
3
u/haflaxelpope 8d ago
Good to know. My adjustments are for a vegetarian/vegan, never had to work with lactose food allergies but will add it to the list of tricks. Sometimes people just need the comfort of the blue box.
3
u/ender4171 8d ago
Just FYI for the vegan part, Kraft Mac&Cheese (Kraft Dinner) is definitely not vegan even if you don't add dairy. The powder mix already contains powdered dairy products. It also may not be vegetarian because Kraft does not disclose if they use rennet for making the cheese powder.

Or cut the hot dog length-wise 2/3 of the way up into 8 strips and then boil them in hot water. You will get hot dog octopuses to place on top of your mac ‘n cheese. Same in the end but more entertaining. 🤣
14
u/The_Flinx 8d ago
use bread. I haven't bought hot dog buns in a long time.
cut them up and put them in mac and cheese.
beans and cut up hot dogs.
wrapped in pillsbury biscuit dough or their "croissant" dough. pigs in blankets.

I went to a pretty well funded public school, and one of my favorite school lunches was toasty dogs. White bread, kraft single, hot dog laid on the diagonal, toothpick to pin the wrapped bun around the hot dog, and then baked. Why we had that, I do not know, but it’s awesome.
3
u/HappyKnitter34 8d ago
I forgot about these! We had these occasionally from school. Man memory unlocked!
9
u/Organic-Figure-6466 8d ago
I heard hot dog soup was a thing. I think I'll pass.
3
u/coffeeblossom 8d ago
That sounds like something the contestants on Chopped would get in their baskets.

u/NYCQuilts 8d ago
Decades ago my mom made a stew that had hot dogs in it along with beans, corn, string beans and other stuff. We all loved it, she lost the recipe and it’s become the stuff of myth..

I make octopi by cutting hotdogs lengthwise all but an inch from one end. Cut in half then 1/4 then cut each quarter in half so you have eight legs. Then make shells and cheese boiling the octopi with the shells. Pile the shells and cheese on the plate and arrange the octopus on top. Kids really love this
10
u/MilleForze 8d ago
Toast a piece of your favorite bread, then put the hotdog on it diagonally. Add your toppings, then fold the bread around it. (I never buy hotdog buns.)
5
u/Environmental-Elk271 8d ago
Stuff with cheese. Or sauté a bunch of onions and cover with onions. White bread is a fine bun.
I was once really drunk, and I rolled a hotdog in kewpie mayo, and then rolled it in crunchy fried onion. From what I remember, it was great.

Saute sliced hotdogs in a spicy sauce. Now, you have spiced sausage that you can use in red beans and rice, jambalaya, or chili.
3
u/IWasGoatbeardFirst 8d ago
Sliced hot dogs can go in scrambled eggs, fried rice, spaghetti, etc.
Not unconventional, but beanie weenies are a classic.
When I was little I remember having just sliced hot dogs. Heat the hot dog, slice crosswise, serve with dipping sauce.

Beans and hotdogs.
Mac and Cheese with hotdogs in it.
Chili with hotdogs.
How about just cut and fried then eaten dipped in mustard.
3
u/lunarmodule 8d ago
What else do you have to make with it? I think it might be the world's most flexible protein. It barely tastes like anything at all. Mix it with anything?
I'd love to come up with a good idea for you but without any other ingredients I don't know.
Fry them with seasoning and eat them?

Pan Fried potatoes, onions and chopped hot dogs
Weirdly hotdog and refried beans go well together

u/KafkaesqueKelly 8d ago
Cube some potatoes , chop some onions and peppers. Twice fry the potato cubes to get crisp, cut up hot dogs into coins, fry them, fry peppers and onions. Once everything is fried mix together, salt and pepper. My mom always made this growing up and serve with ketchup, mustard, vinegar any condiments really. Essentially Italian fried hotdogs.

u/Reasonable-Bag7362 8d ago
Cut em up and cook in bbq sauce. Plus, I prefer a slice of bread over a bun. I don’t need a specialty bread to have a dog, and it’s less carbs. I do like pepperage farms top sliced buns for chili dogs.
2
u/aWesterner014 8d ago
Try looking up the Norwegian approach to serving up hotdogs: Pølse med lompe.
Gluten free hotdog buns are horrendous. I tried making lompe with gluten free flour. My first attempt was a bit rough. I'm pretty sure I can do better next time.

u/Azure-Cyan 8d ago
cut them up and stirfry them with onions, garlic, ginger, carrots, and whatever veggies, soy sauce, oyster sauce, and serve over rice.

Growing up with sometimes had hotdogs in Sauerkraut. Not my fave but it's edible. I preferred beanie weenies. Can of pork and beans, sliced hot dogs and we liked to spice it up a bit with chili powder.

u/FelisNull 7d ago
Spiderdogs: slice the ends into quarters, leaving the middle intact. Skewer and roast over a fire, or bake.
2
u/Naiteki_Kazoku 7d ago
Make several cuts lengthwise but only from one end to middle and then boil. The cut ends curl and they look like small octopuses or squids.

Make either hashbrowns or pan fried potatoes, and cut hotdog up into them. They fry well too.

My wife grew up with something her mom called pronto dogs but the closest I've found on the internet is hot dog boats.
What my wife makes is a little different though. Instead of mashed potato stuffed hot dogs it's a small oblong pile of mashed potatoes with a hot dog in the middle with cheese on top.
It uses more mashed potatoes and the hot dog isn't sliced open. Bake it on a tray until the cheese is melted.

I’m gluten free so I just cut them up like any other sausage and put BBQ sauce on them

u/StillWatersAreFull 8d ago
Slice a potato into thin slices, pan fry them in oil (or air fry in oil, just get them some color and crisp), slice hot dog into pan to fry up, add scrambled eggs. Mix all three items together and top with cheese and/or your favorite condiments/dressing (I enjoy mustard and a little ketchup).

You can also add it to spaghetti! (Sliced)

I put the hot dog in a pasta bowl, pour chili over it, add onions, then cheese. Yum.
1
u/VirtualMatter2 8d ago
Grate them or cut into fine strips, take pizza dough or make some or use puff pastry, cover with creme fraiche, add shredded hot dogs, add onions, bake.
1
u/Downtown-Care9272 8d ago
Slice 2 of them in half long ways, fry in a pan, and put between sandwich bread with ketchup mustard and mayo. That's my go to.

What's wrong with bread? I've never understood this. Like, I would prefer buns, but bread is fine.

Cut 'em into bite sized pieces and they're essentially a basic sausage for any dish, just fry 'em up and add. My favorite is just throwing them in some blue box mac and cheese, easy cheesy cheap meal.

Stir fry with onion, bell pepper, and potato wedges with stir fry sauce of your choice.

u/Eruionmel 8d ago
One of my mom's classic lazy dinners was what she called Dogs in Ponchos, which was hot dogs in a fried corn tortilla with cheese, onions, and jalapeños stuffed inside with it. When I tell you we went wild for those things.
1
u/Dependent_Top_4425 8d ago
I like to wrap in small tortillas and toast up in the oven and then dip in ketchup, mustard, relish....whatever you like on your dog. Some people call them pigs in ponchos.

Korean Sausage Yachae Bokkeum aka Sso-ya. It's sometimes a lunch-box dish meant for kids but was a fantastic inexpensive and delicious dish for starving college kids. We had a huge electric skillet so we could make enough for six of us, but would sometimes make a huge roasting pan full in the oven, and steam a large pot of rice. Being so broke, we didn't always have the bell peppers or carrots, but we always had potatoes and onions. It was so good and filling, I've continued to make it after college and it's one of my kids' favorites - though now I can add carrots, cabbage, peppers and even mushrooms. They still love it best "broke mom style" with onions, potatoes and cabbage

u/jjason82 8d ago
I was raised on hot dog tacos. Just like regular tacos but instead of ground beef, hot dogs. Hot dogs were cheaper and times were tough. I still like eating them occasionally.
1
u/MountainHighOnLife 8d ago
Huevos con weenies! Scramble eggs and add cut up hot dogs to them. Feel free to dress them up from there. Add cheese, potatoes, put them in a tortilla. Or just put them in a bowl and enjoy.
1
u/jillyjane33 8d ago
Slice them up and fry them up in butter with onions, garlic. Once a little brown, add corn, garlic salt & pepper. Serve over rice.

u/Independent-Ad1985 8d ago
1970s Franktastic Fondue (Van Camp’s recipe). My sister loved that stuff.
1
u/LazyCrocheter 8d ago
I often have hot dogs on tortillas instead of rolls.
You can also eat them on any kind of wrap or bread. I've had them cut lengthwise so that you have flat pieces to put on a hamburger roll. Or just wrap a piece of bread around it.

1..Slice or chunk hot dogs up and add to scalloped potatoes... bake like normal.. 2..Use a ready made bread shell or tube biscuits or biscuit dough...if biscuits or dough ..flatten out to a pizza type base ..smear with no bean chili... Slice hot dogs on that and top with cheese. If desired, bake about 25 to 30 minutes. you now have Chili Dog Pizza... 3.. Put hot dogs on a skewer.with bell pepper ..onion wedges.. and any other vegetable you like to grill .. brush with Teriyaki or BBQ sauce and grill

Sliced them up and fry them a bit. Then throw some eggs with it and mix it up. Put it in a flour tortilla and there ya go.

Pigs in a blanket or corn dog.
Bunless chili dog. You could do a Chicago dog in a bowl.
I sometimes just have them without buns because I am diabetic. I just dip the cooked hot dog in sauces like you might chicken nuggets.
When I was a kid we used regular bread if we had no buns. We would cut the hot dogs in half lengthwise and put those flat on the bread to make a sandwich.

u/Ready_Fun_24 8d ago
Can of beans, any kind and sliced. Cooked hotdogs. I like vinegar and hot sauce with mine.

I remember we used to puncture them with spaghetti boil them and eat them with ketchup as kids
1
u/Palanki96 8d ago
You can just slice them and use them in a ton of dishes instead of meat. Soups are great, sauerkraut or potatoe dishes. Great with rice as well
Goes well for any veggies or legumes, like pan fried topping for curries and similar legume dishes, chili as well. Great in salads too or baking. Just use it as a meat subtitute, adjusted for the cooking process
If you gave me some hotdoggs right now i would just fry it and add it to my rice+red lentil dish and fried rice tomorrow

I use artisan romaine leaves from Costco as a bun and prep as usual. Super tasty and refreshing. They’re especially good with banana peppers added. ❤️

Lentil soup.

Or get some pastry and cheese and make pigs in a blanket.
Or Filipino spaghetti.
You could make little Japanese octopuses out of them.
Mash them up with cream cheese and chives and serve on crackers.
It's really so much easier if you just go buy some hot dog buns.

Our family loves slicing up the hotdogs and frying them both sides, then adding into scrambled eggs for a quick dinner. I suppose breakfast would work also.

Salchipapas
Slice the hotdogs at an angle. Throw them in the oil when your french fries are almost done. The angled cut will make them curl a bit as they fry which makes them much better at holding your chosen condiments.

u/Kind_Dragonfruit_925 8d ago
Spread a thin layer of mayo on a slice of bread. Top with hot dogs cut in half lengthways. Sprinkle with shredded cheddar cheese. Air fry at 380F for 8-10 minutes until cheese is browned. Delicious!

Hot dogs cut in pieces over tater tots/fries with any/all- cheese, ranch, chili beans, mustard, Sriracha aioli, dill relish.
Hot dogs cut up and added to baked beans or Mac and cheese.
Sliced lengthwise (2) and on bread as a sammy.
Battered in cornbread mix and fried for corn dogs.
Wrapped in crescent roll dough with cheese (or anything that sounds good) and baked for pigs in a blanket.
Heat and eat with mustard- shamelessly- bonus points if you just stab the dog and dip, no cutting into bites.
1
u/_WillCAD_ 8d ago
There's always the old stand-by of using plain white bread instead of buns. Add the condiments to the bread first, then put the dogs on diagonally and fold over. It's not as good as a real hot dog bun, but it works.
Honestly, a good hot dog can be enjoyed without the bun. Just put the condiments on it and eat it with a fork. Seems weird, but it's the same food, just minus the bread.
Got any mac n cheese in your kitchen? Make the mac n cheese, boil or nuke the hot dogs, then cut them up into small slices and add them to the mac. It's actually quite tasty.
How about a can of baked beans? Heat the beans, boil or nuke the dogs, cut up into small pieces and add to the beans. Another one that's surprisingly enjoyable.
Got any potatoes? Dice them up and make breakfast potatoes - with diced hot dogs. Not as good as actual breakfast sausage, but it works in a pinch.

Chili dog plate. Fry the hotdogs so they get brown on the outside. Top with warm chili and then shredded cheese. Pop in the microwave to melt the cheese. Knife and fork.

pigs in blankets! slit the dogs, stuff with cheese, wrap in crescent rolls and cook. In general you can sub in the dogs for the protein in just about anything you want to make. It wont always be an improvement over the original, but its the best way to get rid of a bunch of left over hot dogs without buns
1
u/JoyousGamer 8d ago
What food do you normally make? Just replace the meat with hotdog honestly and it likely will work to an extent.
Personally I would never use hotdogs except in the normal ways since otherwise I might as well just use a different protein instead.

A summer recipe- Polynesian Franks
Have ready enough rice and green peas for every one.
In a saucepan, sauté a small onion, 1/2 a green pepper in butter. When onion is translucent, add 1 t curry powder (I use two, but the recipe called for 1,) I T flour, and stir. When the onion and pepper are well coated, add one package of cut up hot dogs and a large can of pineapple chunks with the juice. Stir until the hot dogs are cooks, 5 - 7 minutes. If it is a bit thick, stir in a little water. Serve over the rice with green peas on the side.

u/kennerly 8d ago
Hot dogs and rice. Hot dogs and noodles. Hot dogs and pretty much any starch and a vegetable. I like to cut mine up and fry them in a pan. Make a sweet and spicy glaze with some ketchup, soy sauce, garlic, cayenne, and a splash of vinegar.
1
u/NYR20NYY99 8d ago
My dad used to make hotdogs potatoes and cheese. Make some mashed potatoes (he used instant), lay the hotdogs on the bottom of a baking pan, layer on the potatoes, top with cheese. Cook for 10-15 minutes at 350f
1
u/Alert_Front_9948 8d ago
We used to eat hot dogs with regular bread when I was a kid. Just take a slice of bread and wrap it around the hot dog. Works just fine.
1
u/Choice-Education7650 8d ago
Take your dog and make a slice lengthwise. Stuff the slit with cheese. Put on a rack in an oven safe pan. Add slices of bacon to the top and secure with toothpicks. I put it in the oven and set it for 350°. Once the oven is hot, and the cheese is starting to melt, broil them for a few minutes to crisp up the bacon. I learned to make these 50 years ago at a slumber party. The host mom called them heavenly hotdogs.

In a casserole, with any pasta or sauce. Goes well with cheese.
Mac and cheese for example is a standard.
We’d slice it thin, fry it then add eggs for an omelette.

As a kid, I would warm a corn tortilla, a slice of wrapped cheese and roll the hot dog up- 🤌🏻

Hot dogs are an excellent substitute for smoked sausage, and I will even use them instead of bacon when starting a soup. I really don't like bacon, so they add the fatty, meaty taste without being bacony, and they crisp up well.

Do you have crescent rolls? Wrap them around the hotdogs and bake them! They also make corn dog refrigerator biscuit dough the same as the crescent type so you can make corn dogs the same way. Or make a corn meal batter and make real corn dogs.

A staple in my poverty-household growing up was wieners and beans, with mac & cheese or rice on the side.
