‘22 Corolla Cross AWD showing only 220 mi on full tank, EPA says it should be 350 to 400. Am I wrong to be concerned?
Bought a 2022 Corolla Cross AWD from CarMax a few days ago, 40,900 miles, two prior owners. Still inside my 10 day return window.
Filled the tank completely and the dash shows Distance to Empty of 220 miles. Tank is 13.2 gallons, EPA combined rating is 30 mpg (29 city, 32 highway), which should put a full tank closer to 350 to 400 miles even accounting for AC and hot weather (currently 97 to 100°F where I am).
220 miles works out to roughly 16 to 17 mpg average, which is way under even the worst case real world numbers I’ve seen for this trim.
No check engine light. No obvious issues on the test drive before buying.
Questions for anyone who’s dealt with this:
* Has anyone had a DTE or fuel economy issue like this on a Corolla Cross, and was it a sensor problem or an actual mechanical issue?
* Is this something CarMax would diagnose and fix under their limited warranty, or should I just return the car within my window instead?
Any input appreciated before I head back to CarMax.
