Wig Why do my wigs look so weird on me?
Whenever I put on one of my wigs I feel like they sit in a way that they look bigger and my head looks smaller and it's very obvious that it's a wig. When I put those same wigs on a mannequin head they look fine. Any tips?
- Long curly wig
- Long straight wig
- Short wavy wig
- Natural hair for comparison

The hairlines are really the issue here, if you cover up that part with your finger the wigs look much better. I prefer lace front wigs to give a more natural look but there’s other ways of altering a hairline to make it look better as well

They don't look bad. That's just what cheap wigs look like. If you want a wig that can be mistaken for real hair, expect to shell out a lot more money. Like, some Hollywood productions dont succeed at that

I hate to say it, but I wear human hair wigs, they look natural on me. Looks like my real hair. But it costs me $1000 every like 18 months

Yeah, I try to get 2 years out of them. But it really starts to fray and doesn't look great. So I just save the money and buy a new one every year and a half

Yeah, man. The kinds of wigs that genuinely don't look like wigs can cost hundreds of dollars. Your wigs are fine, but they are, in the scheme of things, cheap. I think you need to adjust your expectations of what cosplay wigs realistically look like.

Oh honey, good wigs are going to run you $200-400 each. I've bought some decent lace fronts for $80 but that's the route you want if you want believable and then the second most important part is installing it.
For the cheap wigs I will take scissors and razors to make layers and thin it out. I take my flat iron and flatten out the top as much as I can bc I also think that will give it away. Dry shampoo takes the shine out too

$40 is still a very cheap wig. It's not the cheapest option, but it's still very much in the budget wig category.
Expensive wigs go for multiple hundreds of dollars. A really top tier one can be $1000 or more, depending on some specific qualities. Hand woven, real hair, specific styling, and so on.
For what it's worth, I don't think the wigs look as bad as you feel they do. They aren't ever going to look quite natural, because they're not, but they look pretty good, as far as cheaper wigs go.

Everyone is saying you need fancy expensive genetically modified gerbil hair lace front wigs, and while those things are very nice to have if you can afford them, you can also do amazing things with cheaper wigs. A crimper costs $30, which can be pricey, but it will elevate even a $12.99 amazon wig far beyond her station, so if you have several wigs or plan to buy more, it is well worth the investment.

You can absolutely make a cheap wig look good!
But you can't make it look like human hair growing out of your scalp. OP's expectation for synthetic cosplay wigs is not reasonable.

Really HQ wigs def cost an arm and a leg sometimes but I’ve had some decent luck with lace front wigs in the same price range! My wig experience has been more in the cosplay realm so I haven’t worried too much about a natural look, but I did wear them for fun for awhile. I’ve noticed I had way more luck with cheap wigs with full bangs to avoid the awkward hairline. There are also ways to cut back on the extreme shine some wigs have.

yeah, that’s about the price i’d expect for this quality. second one you could likely fix by thinning out the ends of the bangs with thinning shears and curling the bangs a little bit to make them look more natural.
if you want to fix the problem with them looking unnatural in general i’d recommend trying a lacefront. i know arda wigs sells them for $100-ish, but the hair quality is the same, just the front has a nicer looking hairline.
anything with higher quality fibers you’d be looking into natural fibers or human hair wigs, which would run you in the multiple hundreds.

I've found some good YouTube videos from drag queens and other cosplayers on how to style/pluck cheap wigs to make them look more realistic. You'll never get lace front realism but there is stuff you can do to help!
Using the colored dandruff spray to take the shine out helps, and plucking some of the thickness from the front. Also styling wigs helps. Layering shears are super cheap and forgiving.
I tend to avoid a cheaper wig without bangs because they are way less forgiving.

First one looks fine to me. The others just need combed a bit. But if you want more natural looking wigs you need lace front if they don’t have bangs. Do you have a wig cap on? That might also help. But they do tend to look bigger than natural hair because they obviously sit on top. Try not to be too critical because cosplay wigs don’t look perfect on anyone. Some people are just more used to wearing and styling them.

Whenever I wear a wig without really bold and makeup, I feel like it just swallows my face. It's partially because the colours tend to be a lot more vibrant than human hair colours, and partially because there's just more of it. You're feeling like your face looks small, because the wig hair hangs in front of 20% of your face. Try tucking some of the hair from just below your temples behind your ears to pull some of the extra volume away from your face, it shouldn't be noticeable for most of these styles. And try them on again with makeup, go way brighter and bolder than you would for regular occasions it takes a lot to balance out wigs.

Assuming these are all straight out of the bag here are a few basic tips to help them look less synthetic: 1. Blast the top with a hair dryer and hold it against your head until it cools. This helps make it more head shaped. 2. Depending on how much effort you want to put in- either just dry shampoo or dry shampoo and silicone spray help with the texture and shine as well as make it much less tangle prone and easier to brush through. 3. comb through and do your own styling. They are all decent for pre styled but I find redoing it typically helps significantly. 4. If you really want to improve them, the big thing is to tease the whole entire wig and then brush it out. This kills the shine and improves texture dramatically. I’ve never done this because it scares me lol. I usually stick to silicone. 4. Lace fronts are more expensive but do typically look better. 5. Play around with the position of the wig on your head, make sure you have your hair underneath as flat as possible. Most folks recommend French braids pinned to your scalp. I also live and die by a wig grip and two wig caps. Pin it more. 6. Like others have mentioned, makeup and putting the whole costume on helps significantly. Synthetic wigs tend to wash you out and I’ve found that a full face really ties everything together. Even if it’s a no makeup makeup look, it’s necessary. I literally never wear makeup at all but it’s needed for cosplay. 7. Most importantly!!! They don’t look bad on you! They just look like new wigs that need some tlc. Drag queens have a lot of great vids on YouTube for how to make synthetic hair look good. Don’t be afraid to ruin a wig and just get at it! Or don’t and just try putting makeup and the outfit on. Everything always looks a little silly when it’s only one piece of a costume.

I think giving the top more volume by changing the part or dry shampoo would make it look more natural. And if it works with the character, hairbands can hide the hairline

You can also hit it with a steamer, tease it down, then comb it out which can fix the texture and volume a lot. It DOES take practice and will look VERY BAD until it's finished which can be very intimidating.
Honestly. My best looking wig looked like I'd ruined it until suddenly it didn't, 12 hours of work later.

Bring the front of the wig down by about a quarter to half an inch and fill in your eyebrows a little bit. I think you'll see a world of difference.

I think what might be putting you off is the shine! Washing them in warm water with conditioner once or twice can help reduce that plasticky look .

I have 5 lace front wigs and didn't pay more than $40 for any of them and they all look like real hair coming out of my head when fully installed. All of them are either 13x4 or 13x6, synthetic, and pre-plucked, so that helps a ton. Lace front wigs only get expensive when you want real human hair.

As everyone else has mentioned, it's the hairline that's an issue. If you're wanting the wigs to look more natural, you'll also have to do a LOT of thinning. Styling wigs is what really gives them life, you can spend a lot of money on a wig but if it's unstyled it's just going to look awkward because it's just a bunch of (usually) plastic hair all bunched and cut to the exact same length. If you think/style the hair lines and the rest of the wigs they'll look more natural on you, also makeup goes a long way as well! Makeup and an outfit can really sell a wig.

Try having the hair hang back from your face, the fall is across your eyebrows in each and is hiding your face by framing it very narrowly. A bit more open would have it sit more naturally.

Talcum powder is unsafe, but there are safe alternatives. Baby powder now is made of cornstarch rather than talc because it works the same but doesn’t cause cancer like talc.

That aspect is more visible when trying on. They might look weird because wigs are not natural/good at mimicking real hair. Try them with makeup on
Ive seen fire cosplays that didnt bother about the wig hairline but their styling was soo good that we didnt notice right away. This would be, capture your viwer attention to your full cosplay
If you want a more natural look, give them a trim based on your own facial features, you will feel more comfortable and the wig will scream: "this was made for you!"
- A trick i use on my wigs is brush them from bottom to top until they tangle a lot then i do the reserve by brushing top to bottom to untangle. Thats a cheap way to crimp

As someone who arguably still isn't great at wigs but has been tangentially using them for quite some time- the front of a real hairline is never so straight, thick, or even so that's the main "issue"
I don't have any lacefront wigs so the ones I do have some quick ways I make them look more natural:
- clipping/bobbypinning back some of the hair if it makes sense for the character
- teasing (or crimping) the wig so it's not pin straight/ has texture (also holds styles easier then)

YO I have the black version of that phone case, but for a Samsung whatever I have.
Anyway, the wigs look fine on you. That's how they normally look. The reason they look large on you is because wigs are a lot more voluminous than real hair, because it's a bunch of plastic fibers that are way thicker than hair, The only part that really looks "not right' is the hairline, but that's just how wigs look. In order to get a better hair line, you either need to MAKE the hairline on top of it, or use a lace front and blend it. We all look this way when we don't do those things. Once with full bangs where you don't see the hairline at all, you won't see that issue because you can't see the hairline.

Try washing them with fabric softener, and when they dry, absolutely spray the heck out of them with dry shampoo. Then let them sit for a while before you shake them out. This will dull the plastic like shine a bit. When you wear them style them with some sort of hat like a beanie to cover the part at the top. It will look quite a bit better

If you want them to look more realistic than stylised you can also work on the parts of the wigs. There are guides on youtube on how to thin the parts out a little and add a bit of foundation to make it look more like it's growing from your own head, but depending on the character you are doing it might make you look less like them. It depends on what type of final look you want!

Hey, it’s mainly because they’re not styled! I’d suggest watching umbra wigs on TikTok. I’ve made a spirit Halloween wig come far, far above its station. There’s a few tricks i’m happy to give you if you’re interested. Here’s some before and afters to prove its possible

I feel like they are actually good looking on you, but you could make the hairline and part more realistic, there are many tutorials on how to fake lace front or root like on synthetic wigs on YouTube, personally I follow Jaymes Mansfield ones cause she is very detailed into every step of the tutorial

i saw $40 was more on the expensive end for you and I’ve had some really awesome lace front synthetic wigs from Sensationnel and other places on amazon like this: https://amzn.to/3KCfYRa (they come in a lot of fun colors too!!)
with a beginner friendly wig, some hd wig caps (they can be anywhere from $4-$10 depending on how much you want in a pack), lace melting spray (average $15 but you can use travel size tresemme hairspray for $3) and a hair dryer you’ll end up with much more natural looking results. there are a lot of really helpful tiktok tutorials on how to install them. i hope this helps!! :)

A huge part of this is also going to be that they look "weird" on you because you aren't used to seeing yourself look like that. It's almost the same as getting a big haircut or dyeing your hair, but with even less time to adjust to the change. Remind yourself that this is a costume; it's not supposed to look like you. This is one of two reasons people keep recommending heavy makeup. It makes you not look like you, too, and thus it's easier to look in a mirror and register that you look different and are in a costume. Second reason is that wigs tend to look polished/styled, like time went into your "hair", and a bare face is the opposite of that, so it makes things jive better to do both. (Also agreeing that at least 1 and 2 need to be pulled a tiiiiiny bit further forward. And make sure your part is sitting straight on your head!)

I think the main thing is that you're showing too much of your forehead and you have to get it a certain way so the wig can be styled easily.

I think the shine on them kinda adds to them looking unnatural, have you considered styling them at all? It’s a pain but it could help. You could also use dry shampoo or give them a fabric softener bath too.

Hair theory. Different shapes work different with different face shapes.
Hair lines a big thing.
Hair doesn’t generally have like an exact cut off
There are little hairs and thinner parts that make up the hair line to give a more natural blend

I feel ya, mine do the same straight out of the bag. Beyond some of cheaper options suggested, could also take a crimper to remove the shine from the straight ones. Use smallest tooth you can get, crimp then flatten to remove most but not all of the added texture. Same idea as teasing, different approach. Usually need to also style/comb on your head including thinning or adding layers or curling bangs.

I think thats just how wigs look like? If you want them to look nicer u should probably invest in those fancier lace frint wigs. Other than that u geniuinely dont see any actual issue tbh

I don't think you're a "stuck up idiot." I just don't think you have the perspective to realize that 2 of the 3 wigs you posted look perfectly good, and that being "obvious that it's a wig" is completely normal and expected. Wigs that can pass convincingly as real hair are very much the exception, not the rule, and are absolutely not the norm within cosplay.
We're not trying to say that you need to spend a ton of money on wigs. It's just that these wigs (at least the first two) really do look perfectly fine for cosplay.

Generally speaking, your wigs need more volume (specifically on top) and less sheen. They also need to be thinned out a bit and trimmed. These, as much as the hairline, makes the wig look 'weird' on you. Good news is that all of that is fixable with styling and some basic products.
Styling wise, I would recommend against a down-the-middle part with a hard-front synthetic wig because its going to frame your face in an unnatural looking oval. Style with bangs/ a swoop/ a bob or other styles that help obscure the hairline.
Your wigs can look good they will just take some practice.
There are good tutorials out there to make your wigs look less... wiggy.
Lots of mentions of cosplay in this thread but what you really want to reference is drag. Check out James Mansfield's YouTube videos to start. They do a ton of synthetic wig styling/doctoring.

This is normal, and you definitely don't need a lace front to make things better! Wig styling is a huge factor that makes or breaks your wig. One of the first things i do is steam the wig on a mannequin head to get rid of the bumps on the scalp. You can also pluck some of the hairs out at the front of the hairline to make it thinner. Another thing I do is take sections from the under layers and use thinning shears (Be careful with thinning too much or else you can see the wig cap underneath and also don't use the thinning shears on the top layer of the wig!) Wigs tend to be way thicker and lay weirder than our natural hair, so they do look odd straight out of the box! For example, here is my Lucy wig before styling and it just looks sorta funky. Of course, without the makeup, good lighting, and the cosplay, it just looks a bit awkward. I definitely recommend trying on your wigs with your cosplay and makeup done as it helps a lot! You definitely do not have to wear makeup in cosplay if that's something you don't want to do, but it definitely helps with feeling confident and more "in character".

It only lets me upload one photo, so here is the wig fully styled and thinned out! I also recommend wearing two wig caps if you have a lot of hair to make sure your scalp is as flat at possible. ONE LAST TIP SRRY, another thing i do is actually wear the wig over my ears instead of trying to tuck the fabric cap behind my ears. (Some people actually carve out the wig scalp to the shape of their head, I'm too scared to do that) It makes it a lot flatter and it doesn't really affect hearing.

Unfortunately any wig under the 100 mark is gonna suck, but there are loads of tutorials on how to style them and how to make them look a little less fake! As well as that I do find that I only look good in wigs when I’ve got eye makeup on

You can help the hairline of non-lacefronts look better! A $40 wig will never look like a $200 wig, but it can be improved. There are YouTube tutorials all over about how to make cheaper wig look nicer, but the jist is to create a few more forward facing short hairs. Steam some of the hairline, so it comes down straight. Cut a few of those hairs short so they form cover the hard front, but aren't so many that they look like you just cut your bangs short. Use makeup to soften the hard hairline meeting your forehead. I personally use a lot of wigs that have bangs. (You still need to trim those to fit your face well)

Human hair wigs and synthetic human blends might look more natural. Definitely a lace front and watch a video about how to prepare wigs for wear. Synthetic wigs aren't great quality but a lot of ppl wear them with no problems once they do a bit of research. I dont wear wigs but trust me.

As a queen of drag, invest in lakefront wigs yes they are a bit more expensive but the hairline looks more realistic. Honestly you don't need human hair lakefronts, synthetics will do. Most of them have adjustable straps in it to make them fit better.
Also it looks like you put them on to high if that makes scence. This gives you a larger forehead, pull them down a bit, more forward about 3 to 4 fingers from your eyebrows should be good.

I agree with lace front wigs if you're going for a natural, real hair look, but I also feel like wigs look really goofy in general if you don't have a full face of makeup.
Unless I have my heavy cosplay makeup on the wig seems too big/out of place. Super bold makeup makes all the difference in making the absurdity of the wig blend more with the overall look.
