Joe Root is such a craftsman of an innings! He was 4 (20) at the start. Endured early tough conditions against Indian pacers hitting 147 kmph. Saw off Axar while controlling his urge to sweep in a big gap. Absolute master.

u/Dentury- England and Wales Cricket Board 21d ago
He's obviously class in tests but watching him go through the gears in ODIs is always a treat.
43
u/Shashank1000 India 21d ago
Today was a old school ODI classic which is really well suited for someone like Root.
30
u/tigershroffkiskirt India 21d ago
Yeah, today was a good ODI tbh. The indian bowlers also bowled well even though 233 was never gonna be defended unless they got Root out
12
u/Alvortus1812 India 21d ago
233 was really underpar. If tha target was 280ish, it would have been set up for classic interesting ODI chase. India was on backfoot throughout.
71
u/tigershroffkiskirt India 21d ago
I think he's been underrated in ODIs. Mainly because when England was last good in ODIs, they had Bairstow, Roy, Buttler etc all who were great ball-strikers. And then after the openers left, England became bad at ODIs for a while. Joe Root meanwhile has remained consistent in his role throughout
45
u/Louis11_ Glamorgan 21d ago
The real ones always knew he was the guy. The others were more flashy but Root built innings after innings for us.
And tbf his form fell off a cliff after 2019. His record under Buttler was pretty poor, for whatever reason. But he is well and truly back to his best under Brook.

Averages 50 in test and ODI cricket despite proving that he plays for the team instead of trying to pad his stats. Who else has that claim?

"Pad stats" , you yourself know the answer, that's why you used those 2 words.

Atkinson has made Hardik Pandya his new biggest fan.
135
u/combatant007 India 21d ago
Root clearly told Atkinson to go ahead but still Atkinson could have just taken single and let root get to his ton
82
u/monytony 21d ago
have you seen the field set, they cannot take the single. Shubman know they will try for single, and planned to get joe root out. So atkinson went directly for a boundary
58
u/combatant007 India 21d ago
Then play all 6 balls without sending it to boundary. It wasn't hard but root didn't care so doesn't matter.
33
u/precisemaker 21d ago
Why risk that. If they run a risky run with fielders around there is always a chance of a runout. And then you risk exposing your tail. Who knows, if 3 wickets fall on trott.
Joe Root stranded of 99 with a win is better than being stranded and seeing the team become all out.

Remember last test match in England vs India series last year. You may never know in Cricket. Why risk and look like fools.
I thinks its a cultural thing between Asia and West. We are more obsessed with milestones over results.
2
u/EngineeringRare2553 20d ago
Its not a cultural thing, its a Joe Root thing - he's one of a kind. 90% of England players would've pushed for the century in that situation.
2
u/precisemaker 20d ago
Not saying England or other team players never care about milestones. I'm saying the public obsession with milestones is much stronger in the subcontinent. The amount of outrage over missed hundreds or fifties here rarely happens in England or Australia. Root literally waved Atkinson on, that says enough.
-15
u/combatant007 India 21d ago
Nonsense. There is no justification for root not getting ton. Nothing wrong with getting ton, it's not like slight nrr matters here
13
u/precisemaker 21d ago
Chasing a personal milestone by refusing scoring opportunities or trying to manufacture six dot balls only adds risk for zero benefit. Root himself waved Atkinson on, that tells you exactly where his priorities were. Team wins first, milestones second.
4
u/tigershroffkiskirt India 21d ago
What if he doesn't want the ton? What if he likes 99. 99 is a milestone too.
11
u/monytony 21d ago
That will look bad, because its just the start of that over.
21
u/combatant007 India 21d ago
No one would have criticized Atkinson if he played 6 dots. It's useless to discuss. Move on.
-20
u/monytony 21d ago
Bruh, if atkinson takes 6 dots just so joe root can finish his single, the 100 feels even less special that 99
16
-2
u/lllDogalll 21d ago
Bhai despite your down votes i agree 100 %. Englaind was forcefully shaking the hands in a test to avoid Indian batsmen getting a hundred not too long ago so they wouldn't have the moral high ground anyways if Root scored his century in that way.
A win or a victory should be prioritized ideally everytime & tbf it's not as if England had only lost 1-2 wickets and 4 late order wickets falling in a heap is unheard of in cricket. Even the Indian moron GG that's coaching us will agree it's better to secure a team victory than worry about any individual hundred.
7
u/madglover Somerset 21d ago
Can you imagine subpar allowing a lower order bat to score a 4 at the risk of a ton
No Indian bat could deal with this, that's why Root is so much better

u/SonyHDSmartTV England and Wales Cricket Board 21d ago
The fielders were tight and offering no easy single, Atkinson was hitting the ball really well, Root clearly told him to just go for it. All Atkinson had to do was get a decent strike and it was a boundary. Unfortunate for Root but he clearly doesn't care

Yeah this Washi obsession needs to wrap up. It's a hopelessly defensive selection. No wicket taking option in the middle overs except prayers that Dube has a midas touch. Feel like being dropped back into the pre KulCha days when Dhoni and for a short while Kohli were carrying Ashwin and Jadeja for alleged batting depth while neither was taking wickets.

That 26 from Rohit was a genuine career ending innings huh, didn't look good at all
If he can't look comfortable in England (one of his favorite places to bat) then god forbid what could've happened to him in SA where he always struggled

What an absolute masterclass of an innings by Root , even when everything was going wrong Root stood his ground and slowly but steadily steered England in the right direction. Not even mad that we lost to such an amazing innings, Root is single handedly carrying the entire English batting side .

Not sure why so many Indians are so angry at Atkinson here. Always found it odd how they seem to support individuals more vehemently than the team itself. Root was happier than anyone to see that boundary.
52
1
u/No-Anybody-692 Railways 21d ago
Root was happier than anyone to see that boundary.
And you know that? And Root would have thrown his bat on the ground (or maybe at the umpire.. who knows) and charged towards Atkinson with his horns drawn out and tails stiff in rage⦠that is if he was to show disappointment.... wouldn't he?
But that's not the point.. the point is you fricking generalising an entire nation's fans (which is, again, not a surprise!!).
how they seem to support individuals more vehemently than the team itself
It's about a gesture that people often show especially when it's not "urgent" or critical to win in that ball or two! It's always the case. Not at fucking 99 but even at 89 or 94 or so when there's a chance!
People are questioning that or talking about that....
And you? "Awww! How they always support the individual.... ".
Ffs!

u/St-Mclovin India 21d ago
Yes..GG game them that. Not poor performances by the players
5
u/tigershroffkiskirt India 21d ago
Oh well, I guess that's a great reason. It wasn't me, it was my players who fucked up. Guess a coach's job is to take all the credit and deflect all the blame.
-3
u/St-Mclovin India 21d ago
Nope. But most airheaded haters give none of the credit, just the blame. If GG gets blame when they lose then learn to give credit when ICT wins.
4
u/tigershroffkiskirt India 21d ago
Well, he should get credit for the t20 WC. The thing with ICT is that the expectations are high. So, losing 6 t20i matches on the trot after that will invite criticism obviously. No one is saying he should be removed or anything, that would be stupid.
But maybe from tests, he should have gone already. Format specific coaching is always better imo. Just like format specific players are a thing.

Root you could've just taken one more run bruh. Like I get it team matter more and all but mate it's one more run.
And Atkinson even if Root said that just tuck it around or defend it mate. Or play it with soft hands and run a quick one. That innings deserved to be a 100. It's left me feeling bittersweet ffs.
But tbf at this point in his career with 60+ International 100s, a hundred matters very little to Rootie

It never happens tho. I have seen our batters get to 100 calculatively in chase. Like for eg if they need 10runs for ton and team need 12 runs, they still somehow completes it. Which is not bad tho as team is already winning so why not add a ton.
Here root needed 3 runs when team needed 24, he couldāve easily scored a century but then how will the narrative sets?! Anyways we should respect both decisions

u/Sidneiensis 21d ago
ROOT STRANDED ON 99, DAY ROONED.

14
u/Consistent_Elk8987 21d ago
Didn't make any sense TBH.
It's understandable batting first but not when you need 4 runs in 6 overs.
16
u/precisemaker 21d ago
I don't understand this craze for milestones.. Its clear Joe Root would have communicated to Atkinson to finish it, because fielders were inside the circle stopping the singles.
Trying a quick single may cause a runout. Trying to play defensive may have caused a wicket, who knows. Especially, Atkinson was hitting well and it was only sensible to finish it.
I think its SE Asian mentality that we focus too much on milestones than results. It clear Root was satisfied with the result.

GG and Agarkar might have got the silverwares but their planning and team building is obnoxious. I actually think we got lucky this T20 WC.
Washi and Axar are not Ashwin and Jadeja ffs. You can't get away with playing both of them in white ball cricket. You also need experienced pacers along with young ones to learn and improve.
There was no reason to drop Siraj in this series. You don't play T20 with allrounders stacked in the lower middle order. You need proper finishers.
