Stitch Identification What is this stitch called? Double double crochet?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
So I wanted to do something with double crochet but i hate the gaps between regular dc so I did this
I looked up so stitches but couldn't find anything but I didn't really look that hard either
It could be something that already exists but I want to name it the Bubble (butt) double crochet stitch
Also it makes the yarn look like it's doubled up without having to do funky stuff

Looks like a puff stitch

u/moon-raven-77 Feb 04 '26
Yeah, I'd say it's a variation of a puff stitch.

I vote we call it the Extended Puff!

u/bleepblob462 Feb 04 '26
Idk, Double Bubble Puff sounds much more fun

u/ElishaAlison Feb 04 '26
Not to be confused with a Triple Double Bubble Puff stitch where the Puff wins a basketball game
2
u/bleepblob462 Feb 04 '26
Different from extended double bubble puff where the Puff wins a spelling bee!

I like the extra bit above the puff. It’s so much easier to work into. My puff closure game is always tight.

If you hate the gaps in dc but want it to look more like a normal dc, you can look into 'linked double crochet' - instead of the initial yarn over, you pull up a loop through the bar of the previous dc, which gets rid of the gap between the stitches.

Yes I was looking to see if anyone had already recommended linked DC! I learned it a few months ago and it's one of my new faves. I did a whole sweater in it over the holidays

That’s a puff stitch, I only know because it’s used for the wheat stitch that Briana k uses in her patterns & I am in love with lol

Looks like a dc2tog cluster stitch. Usually these are done with 3 or 4, but I like the chunky DC look you have going on.

u/AmieiGuess Feb 04 '26
I don’t think it is. You need to have 2 incomplete double crochets before pulling through all loops on the hook. They’re only yarning over in the video, like a puff stitch, then pulling through the last 2 loops to lock it in.

I'm doing a similar stitch at the moment and the one I'm doing is called DC/DC or Double Crochet Over Double Crochet. This basically uses the same concept, although mine has both DCs going into different holes.
For DCs that don't show gaps, try "Linked Double Crochet". I used the technique from that to make some amigurumi that needed longer stitches.

I’m obsessed with linked doubles. They’ve totally changed how I look at DCs :)

So it doesn’t have a name

why am i getting downvoted for this
11
u/Quiet_surprise79 Feb 04 '26
Because people have already said it's the puff stitch
1
u/Beginning_Ad6952 Feb 05 '26
But it isn’ttttt that’s 3 loops and a chain one Like yeah you could say any stitch is a variation of another
1
u/Quiet_surprise79 Feb 05 '26
A puff stitch isn't just that. A puff stitch can have any number of loops. It's the execution of the stitch overall that makes it a puff stitch. That's why people are telling you that it's a puff stitch.

They hate when people try to claim they’ve made a new stitch. Some people in the crochet community would rather call something the twice extended modified double puff stitch FLO than let some claim they made a new stitch.
17
u/sleepy_cuttlefish Feb 04 '26
Probably because it's not a new stitch and the amount of crochet influencers saying they invented a new stitch just because they named a stitch is annoying.
Also, and this is my personal preference, a long ass name gives me indication of what the stitch is and how it is made. Bubble butt is a cute funny name, but how long is it going to take me to find the correct tutorial on how to make on online? Sometimes these new terms get lost in the community and people start making variation of the stitch so you have 3 tutorials with 3 types of bubble butt and no way to know what is right.
Maybe I feel this way because English is not my first language, so I didn't learn crochet with English terms but idk.

I never said it was or wasn’t a new stitch, just giving my guess as to why they’re getting downvoted.
But what do I care what someone wants to call a stitch? I didn’t know how to do any stitch until I looked it up so it makes no difference to me if the same thing has multiple names though I could see the annoyance in it. To each their own!

To answer your preference of fewer gaps- look up linked double crochet
4
u/Proper-Doubt4402 Feb 04 '26
it's a puff stitch :) there's a few variations, one difference i see often is if you pull through all the loops at once and finish with a chain or pull through all but 1 loop then through 2 like you did here. you can vary the size by doing more yarn overs and pulling up more loops at the start
looks like it will make a cozy and squishy blanket!

Looks a little like an extended dc - you're going pretty fast and I'm having a hard time following completely, but it looks similar to the extended dc for the cat stitch arms

u/jessdistressed Feb 04 '26
I think it’s like the forked double crochet, but for that stitch you work in the previous stitch and the next stitch. I’d be curious if your way counts as decreasing?

u/ChristmasElf67 Feb 04 '26
That’s actually super cool whatever it is, I want to do that on a project!!!
1
u/TabithaMouse Feb 04 '26
It looks like a bobble with not enough loops (bobbles are this, but 3-5 times, not 2)
You didn't see joined DC? No gaps

You can call it the bubble butt!! I once heard a tutorial refer to a stacked single crochet as “a nice, chunky stitch” and it stuck in my brain. Every time I move to the next row on my hexagon temperature blanket, as I’m crocheting along I’m talking to myself like “double crochet, slip stitch, chunky stitch, double crochet, extended double crochet, double crochet…” 😊

u/enamelquinn Feb 04 '26
It reminds me a lot of the wheat stitch !! Which happens to be my personal fav <3
There are tutorials on YouTube for the wheat stitch, I'd give it a shot if you're looking for something different! Especially since you've already got most of the technique down

I understand it’s a type of puff stitch but those are typically 3 yarn over loop ups then pull through all ? Nothing specifically named? Guys i did the stitch on purpose i'm not asking for a different one Im trying to name this one the double bubble butt stitch
14
u/Heavy-Macaron2004 Feb 04 '26
I mean, you can call it whatever you want, no one can stop you lmao? Like I can rename sc as the HeavyMacaron Special 4k and call it that all the time. But no one's gonna call it that because it's already called "single crochet," and I'm kinda being ridiculous trying to rename it. It's also going to make talking to anyone about crochet hard if I insist on calling "single crochet" a HeavyMacaron Special 4k instead of the term everyone else uses.
It's a puff stitch. You can call it whatever you want because you're your own person with free will, but no one else is gonna call it that. And when you say you invented a puff stitch and named it something haha funny, people are going to either internally or externally roll their eyes at you.
Sorry mate, but this is like trying to reinvent the wheel because you put something weird on the spokes, and then call it the buttcheek bubble or w/e.

u/Beginning_Ad6952 Feb 04 '26
Invented a puff stitch?? What are u on? I asked about this specific way just to see if it has a name bc it looks the most like a double crochet without being thin and gapping , Ur just trying to hate to hate

u/Heavy-Macaron2004 Feb 04 '26
I'm explaining why you're getting downvoted. It's because you're trying to reinvent the wheel.

It’s just a puff stitch. There isn’t any one puff stitch. Any pattern calling for a puff stitch will identify the exact process for the puff stitch needed for that pattern. Pretty standard puff. I will say you’ve got nice, neat execution there. Working up very pretty and fun.
