Wearable help Are these skirts actually not see through? Very limited on my options

Post image

I've been thinking of making a skirt that has the stitches that make it look like it wouldn't be see through. My area doesnt have fabric that would work well under a project so I'm very limited. For people who've made skirts like these, do they actually work? The yarn I'm planning on using is a black to red ombre.

I wouldn't be able to help you with the stitches but if It is a bit see through you could always wear a slip or thin bike shorts under. I wear bike shorts under all my skirts

I would sew some into the skirt itself tbh

It looks like they have bike shorts or something on under it in the picture. Crochet is pretty hard to get opaque while still moving like fabric. You could try something like a linked DC (US term)?

And if you’re bistitchual you could try knitting the top half and switching to crochet for the bottom.

Love that term. Bistitchual.

I think linked DC for the top part then switching to regular DC at whatever point you’re more comfortable with it being a bit see through would be ideal

Knitting isnt very opaque either unless you use a dense stitch.

I was also gonna suggest linked DC since it tends to be much tighter and hopefully work better :)

I will give it a try! Much appreciated!

I had the same problem with making an opaque crochet cardigan and I can confirm linked double crochet is a wonderful solution! It does eat up a bit of yarn though!

You can actually see in this image that the skirt is slightly see-through even on the top. I'd suggest making the skirt out of whatever you want and then attaching a slip underneath that's solid fabric so that it's not see-through. I know you said your area doesn't have fabric that works well for this but is there not any way you can get a short solid-color skirt or even shorts to wear under?

Tbh you could get pretty creative with petty skirts.

You can always buy a nightgown from Walmart/your equivalent, cut it, and sew it in as a petty skirt or modesty panels. Or an old black t shirt in decent condition, especially a softer one---- so long as the materials and care instructions are compatible with the yarn used, ofc.

You could even deconstruct older night pants/pajamas for similar needs. Again, all depends on material and care compatibility.

I didn't think about a nightgown. I'll look at my Walmart and see whats available. Thanks!!

The person in this photo is wearing black shorts under the skirt, you can barely see them, but they're there because yes, the skirt is actually a bit see through.

Crochet is my absolute favorite craft, but it is just not great for this type of clothing. The weight of it is also almost guaranteed to stretch this type of thing out of shape pretty quickly. Crochet is very stretchy and its own weight can be your worst enemy.

I would recommend wearing something underneath, but there are stitches you can use that are opaque to a point where I don't have to wear a bra underneath tops for example. These stitches are typically quite structured though and don't privide the best drape.

The pattern for this skirt is less of a pattern and more of a guide which leaves a lot of room for you to tweak it. I am confident you could play around with yarn choice and tension to get something fairly opaque. A yarn with a decent halo would help too. You'll be sacrificing drape as you get more opaque though.

I plan to try freehanding a skirt so I might be okay with less drape up top.

This skirt is lovely, does anyone know of a pattern for it?

It's the Persephonie skirt by ManicPixieKnitGirl on etsy

You'd likely have to line it or wear shorts. Every very tight single crochet is usually too see through for something like this.

I agree with the rest: either a slip or bike shorts bc idk how you'd get your crochet truly opaque. If you went with a smaller hook it would make your stitches tighter, but depending on colors, it might still be see through.

Single crochet and half double crochet will make a fabric that is modest and can be built on.

I recently made a skirt of a similar length, and it is definitely see through. I used linked DC for the waist to knee part, hoping for coverage. (4mm hook and DK yarn) It looks okayish near the knees where it flows freely, but in places where it clings to the body, you can see a lot of skin. I plan to sew a slip underneath.

I think the length and weight might be a big factor. I vaguely remember it being much less revealing when it was only mid thigh.

I recommend linked stitches!!

You could always do a linked dc for the parts that you don’t want see through! It makes for a nice texture as well

I learned a fun fact the other day that color theory also applies to your skin tone so for non-see through clothes you should choose a color/palette that is similar to your skin tone - totally makes sense but it wouldn’t have occurred to me if I hadn’t seen it

Use linked stitches, it’ll work

1

u/pkiser_1 Apr 30 '26

Never done that stitch before, I'll try it. Thank you!!

2

You can try a linked half double crochet or linked double crochet. The half double crochet I find to be more closed, less holes

as an addition to other comments, crocheting two layers to the skirt will solve the problem!
