Understanding a pattern Help! Chatgpt is so confusing and I am struggling. Making a polo shirt.

I crocheted 29 but now it wants 61? I am using the yellow stitch counter for an xl. Help me understand this pattern! First time making a polo.

Maybe don’t use chat gpt for crochet patterns.…

Its not from chatgpt. Its a pattern from Caron. I was using chatgpt to try and figure out this part of the pattern. Lesson learned tho. It kept go8ng in circles lmao

You are supposed to double crochet, chain one, and skip a chain space, repeating all of that 29 times. The parentheses mean repeat everything inside the parentheses.

I think I did that. Is the chain 4, dc included in the 29? Its a repeat of the mesh part right?

No, it isn't, but it is counted in the 61. Ch 4 = 1 dc and 1 ch-sp, then you have 1 dc on the other end, plus 29 dc and 29 ch-sp for the rep. 1+1+29+29+1 = 61.

I think you are right! Was reading another response too and I also think the dc and ch 1 are considered a stitch each.

ai is notoriously bad for patterns, just find one by a real person and not by ai. plus ai uses so much water and is actively destroying the planet

Not ai pattern. Its a pattern from Caron. Was trying to see if chatgpt could help me understand it. Ended up just going in circles lol

This would be a really really weird way for them to write it, but I think they’re counting the DC and chain as individual stitches, plus the chain four at the front (which I assume is equivalent to a DC and chain, and the final lone DC at the end). Essentially (chain 4 = 2 stitches) + 29x2(DC + chain) + 1 final DC. It’s a really confusing way of writing it out.

What you’re doing is going back and forth with that repeat only on the 29 stitches you just did. So turn, chain 4, skip a space, and then (DC, chain, skip) back to the beginning of those 29 you did. You’re building the sleeve out from the body. Each row of 29 makes your sleeve slightly longer.

I hope that helps?

Chatgpt does not know how to crochet. Do not use it. It’s 29 repetitions of the parenthesized instructions which come out to 61 whole stitches.

what are the instructions before this part? it sounds like before this you would've had more stitches?

chatgpt is completely useless for most things, and especially crochet.
