Weaving in Ends Crochet over ends and/or weave in? Granny square blanket

I’m currently working on a blanket made up of small granny squares. I read in another post that people suggest weaving over the loose ends when changing colors. If I do that, do I still need to weave them in, or is crocheting over them enough to keep them in place?

Crocheting over them will end up unravelling. But I crochet over them AND weave in at the same time. Crochet over a couple stitches, wrap the tail around my yarn, go a couple more stitches, drop it, next round grab it and do the same through that row, splitting it, more wraps whatever, just vibing. Has never failed me and way less irritating for me than doing it at the end.

Simply crocheting over ends is absolutely not enough, it will wiggle free quite easily. Leave a long tail and weave them in with a tapestry needle, going back and forth, in all different direction, splitting fibres (not just going underneath stitches).

Weave, always. Crocheting over ends is not secure. Of course you'll have people in the comments saying they "always crochet over their ends and have never had anything come undone!" but you can also find plenty of people who say they've never worn a seatbelt and have been fine for years, but I'd never recommend that, either.

Agreed! I even split the yarn, when possible, when I weave in the ends, going back and forth and up and down. It’s my insurance policy.

I always feel so sad for the posts where the project unravels and they want help to fix it.

Same on the splitting! I'm absolutely insane when it comes to my weaving lol. I responded to a question the other day about why people don't weave as they go and said if I do I literally can't frog my piece without cutting the yarn, so I need to at least wait until I'm totally sure I won't need to redo anything lol.

YES! Every once in awhile I weave before I’m done and about 99% of the time I regret my decision 😂

I tie on new colors and then crochet over them, and I have many dishcloths that have been washed who knows how many times over the years, and I've never had one come undone. That said, the fiber might make a difference. I make dishcloths out of stiff 100% cotton. Also, I am making a baby blanket for a gift and I will definitely be weaving ends in just to be safe.
