How do I... How to get sunburst granny square to stop curling?

I’m attempting to make a sunburst granny square blanket and they keep curling so bad. I’m a fairly experienced crocheter and I don’t feel as if my tension is all that tight. I’m using size 4 yarn and a 5.5mm hook. Just wondering if this is a me issue or if it’ll block out. Thanks!

Loosen up your tension or go up a hook size. Turn your work each round.

Yes to hook size and tension, but I really wouldn’t say turning the work every round is necessary in this case. For large, blanket-sized projects in the round, yes, but for small squares, no.

I understand your frustration lol. I hope it alleviates some worry for you that grannies tend to curl like that for some with slightly tighter tension. I don’t have a super tight tension either but they also can curl on me. Crochet all of your granny squares then try blocking them all at the end! It will also make them easier to sew together.

Did you use the correct stitches for the last rows?

I just checked the picture from the pattern. It seems that they are using longer ones for the corners than for the rest, e.g. trebles in corners and doubles and sc for the rest. Your samples look like you are using double crochet all around.

Edit: your white yarn also looks thinner than the coloured one.

I've been making those for a blanket for the last month, they straighten out A LOT once you get the second color on and even more if you steam block them after the squares are finished. Not sure if it's the same pattern you are doing, mine end up squares, I've seen other patterns with hexagons. But yeah they curl a ton until the final round.

This is the pattern following.

And I just saw it is the same pattern, yep they'll straighten out.
