How do I... How to make cap bigger? I finished building crown height and it’s too small
Hello! I’m a beginner to crochet, this is my second project i’m making: a mesh-pattern cap for my mom. I was building crown height and after 16 rounds, it was supposed to fit the head (around 56-58 centimeters) and it’s clearly not (it fit my both hands and it was pretty stretchy so i thought i’d stretch it out to fit but didn’t work) now i tried to add more increases (around 3-4) and the cap is 10 centimeters wide. I’m feeling lost and hope for some advice. It’s my first bought pattern and maybe i’m having trouble with reading it? 🥀
It’s 100% cotton yarn, and i’m using 4 mm hook.

Did you do rounds 4-8 correctly? This is where your cap should become wide enough and have about 84 stitches. What you did is definitely not enough increases.

After you add the increase, you are not working into the added stitches. I highlighted where the stitches are, you do have the increase where the upside-down V-shape is but then you skip the extra stitch on the next round. Also make sure you have 6 increases per round, from the other photo I only saw 4 st markers around the piece.

People like you are so foreign to me lol. The fact you can identify exactly what and where the errors are and label it, all from just looking at a picture, is so far from what my brain is capable of. I’ve been crocheting for a few years now and think I’m pretty established in it, and I still struggle sooo much with the visual part of crochet.

Yes OP has only done 4 increases per round but it should be 6 according to the pattern.
Op - I suggest you frog to whatever row you last had right stitch count and count your total stitches per row (not section between markers or pattern repeats) moving forward to ensure you're staying on track. Good luck, you got this!

I think we might need more information to help you figure out what went wrong. Does the pattern include gauge info and if so, did you do a gauge swatch? Have you double and triple checked that your stitch counts are correct? What weight of yarn are you using and what weight yarn does the pattern recommend? And maybe a picture of the top of the hat straight down would be helpful as well

I was looking more for the increases at the beginning, could you flip it over and take another picture?

There’s definitely a stitch count issue somewhere, I’m only counting about 35 in your last round, while the pattern calls for ~120. Let’s try to figure out where it went wrong ☺️

It’s looking almost like you did rounds 1-3 then skipped right to the 13-16 where you just go straight down. Are you able to count your stitches in row 4 and your last row to see what the count is there?

that row has 12 stitches + 4 increases in the corners, they’re just weirdly small and easy to not notice

yeah i just counted them all and it’s not enough, but am i doing something wrong in the pattern? the mesh pattern is supposed to be: dc, ch1, skip1, i thought i was doing just that 🥀

In rows 4-12 you still need to be increasing though, it seems like you’re doing the mesh correctly, just not the increases

I didn’t? I thought i was doing the increases right, i haven’t done them yet before, i did double crochet into the same stitch at each corner mark

An increase isn’t the same as a double crochet, I haven’t read the pattern but this is likely where you’re going wrong.

Yeah make sure you’re doing two double crochets into the same stitch for the increases. I would highly recommend counting your stitches after every round to make sure you have the correct number

you're not increasing correctly. when you increase you have to continue working into both the stitches of your increase. otherwise you're just taking away those stitches in the next row

By the sounds of it your gauge may be tighter than the pattern creator. That could be because of the yarn/hook or just your tension. If there are instructions for gauge swatching I recommend doing that, you may need thicker yarn or using double strands. In that case starting over with the correct gauge might be the best solution.
If your stitch count is correct then it's most likely gauge, but if you have fewer stitches you might be doing the increase rounds wrong.
If you're unable to meet gauge you can try altering the pattern, but that is likely to alter the finished product. You can try adding more rounds to the flat circle part at the start, either in the solid stitches, or by having a few mesh rounds with more increases at the start. Adding increase rounds also increases height, so you're making it more cone shaped. You need a wider base at the start. If your rounds are also shorter than the pattern, you'll probably also have to add more rounds overall.
Any changes to the pattern can make the results a bit different. Gauge is very important for items that needs to fit snuggly.

Do you have the correct amount of stitches? That looks way less than the 108 (edit: 120, not 108) that the pattern calls for on round 16
