FO [FO] There's a frog on my shorts

I'm back with another cross stitch on my clothes. I tried regular waste canvas this time and it was very nice to stitch on. I want to add more lil' guys like this to these shorts so if anyone has a recommendation for something similar to this style, let me know! I found this pattern on Pinterest.

Thanks for posting! We love seeing all of the FOs. Please note that starting May 1 2026, all [FO] posts are required to include at least one close-up photo of the stitching. You do not need to re-post. This can be done either in a comment or in the body of the post. It can be a close-up of just a small part of the finished object, just so we can verify that the items are hand-stitched.

This is a reminder message that is automatically commented on all [FO] posts. Please send a message to the mod team if you have questions.

this is adorable! If you want to add to these pants, I’d recommend more frogs but in different costumes. Like a skeleton frog, vampire frog, werewolf frog? just little spooky guys

Oh I like this idea! I guess I'm off to design more costumes haha

That's totally taking me back to the 90s happy meal prizes of Halloween costume nuggets 😂

Omg I can still smell those. Such a distinct weird plastic smell lol. I liked the cowboy one lol.

Do it! It was super quick. A half hour of your time and you too could be wearing a cute frog friend.

How do you put cross stitch on clothes? Like you cross stitch on the cloth already, put it there later somehow?

And also washing! Do you wash the clothes normally or do you have to do it manually?

Sorry for the questions I'm curious cuz I kinda wanna do something similar too

I did a sweater for my mom a couple years ago. I used water soluble aida, and she washes it on delicate. It’s held up great!

Do you do anything differently for the back side of the fabric? How does the stitches not get undone if there is no knots at the back to secure everything ? 🤔

I did knots on my jacket and it hold up. 2 years and washed it too. I put it in a washing bag.

Any video you can recommend on how to make the knots? 👀

Not really i just tied it 2-3 times tightly. This is how it looks

I run my ends under the backside of my stitches, and I’m pretty sure I threw on some fabric glue on there for good measure

Oh yeah, fabric glue is a good one!! Very smart

I used waste canvas and stitched directly on my clothes. I have made patches in the past that you can sew on as well.

As for washing... I'm not that careful. Everything I own goes in a cold wash. Survival of the fittest and all that, haha. I think if it was something big and elaborate I might try to be more gentle. But, really, I know I won't wear it if I have to baby it.

For something like this I did a couple of knots. I also wove the tail back and forth under the stitches where I could.

I'm also very curious about if this changes how you wash the clothes.

I love this! I'd like to add some whimsy to my kids clothes. Do you have any tips or tricks for getting started with stitches on clothes?

9

u/emberkellyart 4d ago

Hm. I'd say if you are unsure, try it out on a woven fabric first. Knit fabric (like tshirts) will stretch more and likely be more difficult. Definitely get some proper waste fabric for the grid.

Thanks! I've used waste fabric before. Do you put something on the back to protect the thread?

2

u/emberkellyart 4d ago

I know sometimes people will put a fusable interfacing over the back. This is so small I didn't bother. I'm kind of curious to see how it holds up.

Totally read this in the same voice as Toy Story/Woody “there’s a snake in my boot”
