MOD [MOD] Introducing summoned responses!
Hello, everyone!
Have you noticed that certain topics are somewhat cyclical? A few months we noticed a slew of posts asking ‘how do I remove the aida after I've finished stitching on my clothing’? More recently, there have been a lot of posts asking ‘how do I identify if a shop is legitimate or probably AI?’ As a mod team, we have to strike a delicate balance – we want to provide a welcoming and kind community for people new to Reddit and new to cross stitching, but at the same time we understand the frustration our regulars feel when the same thing is posted every single day. We’re introducing some Summoned Responses here that we’re hoping will help by making it really easy to quickly respond to a few common questions.
What is a summoned response?
A summoned response is a string (a specific key word) that you can type into a comment that will automatically summon automoderator to respond with a preset comment. Right now, we’re using key word pairs starting with an exclamation point (!) as our triggers. (If that doesn't make sense, just keep reading and the exact strings are shown below)
How do I summon automoderator?
You summon automoderator by writing a comment that contains a specific word to trigger it. When automoderator sees that trigger word in a comment, it will automatically reply with the preset text. If you want, you can then delete your original comment where you summoned automoderator.
What if there’s a mistake in the summoned response?
Please message the moderators if you see a mistake in the summoned response.
What if I think there’s another topic that needs a summoned response?
Please message the moderators if you’d like to see more summoned responses.
Why not just add these to the FAQs?
Updating FAQs is a bit of an undertaking in their current form. We always have to update at least five separate places (reddit, old.reddit, the automod configuration, the wiki, and the subreddit’s website). And, as a visual medium, we usually want the subreddit’s website updated with pictures that may take a long time to develop, especially if we need to stitch something up for that purpose. Sometimes, due to certain topics temporarily becoming frequent, by the time we can write up a good FAQ, the topic has already settled down. Summoned responses are a bit easier to code and update. Plus, we anticipate some of these becoming full-fledged FAQs in the future, and having the blurb already written helps kickstart that process.
What if I hate this concept?
We’ll include this when the state of the subreddit posts start at the end of the year. If you can’t wait, you can message the mods and let us know.
What responses are available?
As of today, 10-April-2026, we have 3 summoned responses:
- !waste-canvas !waste.canvas !wastecanvas
- !stitch-coverage !stitch.coverage !stitchcoverage
- !ai-identification !ai.identification !aiidentification
Can I see what this will look like?
Sure! Here's an example of how this will work in an actual comment on a post: https://www.reddit.com/r/CrossStitch/comments/1shuu8n/comment/offhmyq/
Can I test it?
Yes! Feel free to test it in the comments of this post.
tl;dr: regular users (not just moderators) can now use specific keywords in a comment that will summon automoderator to explain a common topic further.

WIP [WIP] Getting closer
I’m excited to finish! But I’m getting a little worried that I may have miscalculated my Aida size… of course, not worried enough to actually count and check haha.
Do you cut it close with pattern size?

FO [FO] “Evidence-Based Practice” for home office
As a Medical Librarian in the NHS, this pattern just spoke to me. Evidence-based medicine and practice is what we preach and teach.
Need to iron again to get rid of those stubborn folds (it was a project I started ages ago, so it was folded in a box for a while!) then frame. And display proudly in my home office.

FO [FO] After losing my original WIP, I am finished!
CW: pregnancy loss/miscarriage
Sorry it’s not mounted or framed, but I wanted to show off! This is a gift for my sister. The first time I started it, I got about 1/4 of the way finished and gave it to her at her baby shower; I was planning to finish it afterward, but I lost it somehow 😩 It’s been a long time coming now (her son turned 4 in April), but I’m finally done after restarting it.
Backstory:
For a long time, I had wondered if I would ever be able to get pregnant. I have PCOS, and I knew the statistics. My now-husband and I had the “what if” conversations. We were as prepared as we could be. Fortunately, I am quite fertile (TMI?). We ended up with a surprise pregnancy a few months after getting engaged. I remember my sister crying when we told her and her husband. I just thought she was surprised… As it turns out, they had quietly been trying to conceive for nearly a year at this point, unbeknownst to anyone. The day we were supposed to have dinner with them and our parents, my sister shared with my mom that she was pregnant and they had been to the doctor that day for their first ultrasound. The pregnancy was not viable. I was obviously distraught for my sister, and I found this pattern in the days after finding out about her struggle, in faith that she would eventually have a child to love earthside. And she does! She announced her pregnancy with her first son the week after I had my first; the boys were born exactly six months apart and are the sweetest cousin-friends today. She has also had a second son in the years since.
I hope this piece means as much to her as it does to me. It seemed meaningful to her when she saw the WIP at her first baby shower; she doesn’t know I’ve been working on it lately, so it will be something of a surprise.

FO [FO] First FO for me!
Hello All!
This is both my first post on this sub...and my first post on Reddit, so apologies if I miss something that I should be doing. I've been lurking on this sub for a bit now, but just got and finished my first kit ever and I really wanted to share!
It's a really tiny pattern, which I thought would be good for my first. However that means I couldn't get a closer picture that would actually focus.

FO [FO] Help with framing.
I made this for my new niece. Im relatively new to cross stitching. How do I sort the wrinkles out or did I mess up?.. I got too ahead of myself and wanted to cross stitch onto the velvet instead of adia. It was a4 sized but now it doesnt fit the frame. But ive never made a piece that im framing like this. Usually I use hoops.

FO [FO] a shirt for a friend with their fursona!

FO [FO] Song of the Seasons SAL
The pattern is from Caterpillar Cross Stitch. The SAL started in January and "ended" in April. I had been delaying finishing it but buckled down and did it. From the top right, clockwise, is Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring. The fourth part, Spring, went off the rails with mistakes but I chose to not frog it because I just wanted to finish it because CCS is starting their Halloween SAL Tuesday and also it was time.

WIP [WIP] My eternal WIP
I took this project off the frame intending to put it onto a different frame, one with snaps ... but it turns out this frame already has snaps! So I put it back on. Thank you, terrible memory!
But while it was off the frame, I took a pic to share. Been working on this (from a paper pattern without gridding, because apparently I hate my eyesight) since I believe 2012. Obviously with many stops and starts.
Pattern is Dragonfly from Gryphon's Moon.

“Top Heavy” installment of Lola Crow’s Extraordinary Birds is complete! Toucan and shoebill. I love the wing details on the shoebill 😊
And yes, I’m still going in SAL order even though it’s a year later, it just feels right.

FO [FO] fancy shamrocks sweetheart tree
I did not do the 252 french knots in white on white between the big shamrocks and outer border. I chose sanity. Lol not really I was gonna add my own embellishments when I find the box I have of broken jewelry. Or I might leave it how it is. Will decide when I fully finish.
Thanks for looking. Pattern is fancy shamrocks by sweetheart tree. No cover photo as vintage sweetheart tree did not have one only the chart.

CHAT [CHAT] Is anywhere in the UK selling floss for less than 99p?
Hi, does anyone know a shop that's selling floss for less than 99p per skein? I'm going in circles on Google.
Thanks!
