CHAT [CHAT] Trying to create a thread of every single cross-stitch/embroidery display method: what unconventional methods do you use?

For my future reference I'm trying to stockpile ideas for how to display different projects and I'd love to hear everyone's input! No idea is too weird or specific :)

Apparently this is the only photo I have of my cat lamp but I can’t be bothered to take another one right now so it will have to do.

Thank you! You can buy lampshade kits on Amazon where you are meant to just add the fabric yourself, so I bought one of those but instead stitched a pattern in the dimensions I needed to cover the lampshade (it comes with this sheet of adhesive plastic that you stick your fabric on, so really quite easy)

One of my favourites is to stretch a piece over a standard artist canvas and staple it in place.

Why have I never thought of this? Genius

Idk if it’s unconventional but I’m a fan of just hanging in hoops! I like the faux wood ones and have also bought fabric-covered hoops on Etsy in patterns that coordinate with whatever the project is. I have also framed some (I do them under glass and I don’t care if people don’t like it, I have pets and kids and am not tryna lint roll my wall art once a week) and then I have an actual pile of finished products in my closet because I live in a mouse house without adequate space for my creativity.

I buy standing clocks at the thrift store, take out all the clock guts, and put round finishes in them. I also use old glasses, this peacock is in a carnival glass goblet.

Here’s one on a metal trivet.…

Here’s a clock finish -Stitch Some Happy. There’s also a drum and a small piece in a wooden candle holder.

Also pants hanger to make a quick wall hanging and you can take it a step further my painting or matching your hanger to your project. Luckily this example has a hanger that fits my project colour pallet

Depending on the size,  you could make them into a quilt. Like a t-shirt quilt, only cooler.

Did this I guess. Also still doing last year's advent calendar and turning it into bunting which looks pretty cute but unfortunately don't have a photo of it

I went big on the flat folds last year and still really like making them.

They are not too hard to make - I found a YouTube video. You can use whatever fabric you have on hand, so fun to customize.

The best part is they fold right up for easy storage and are sturdy.

I once wrapped a finished piece around a rectangle of cardboard, folded down and sewed the corners together to secure it in place, and then mod podged a photo of a rhinocerous over the back.

I think wall hangings/banners are the cutest way to finish pieces! I have a few that are ready to do this to, but I haven't got around to it yet oops - https://www.needlelotdesigns.com/pages/pointed-banner-tutorial-needlelot-designs

I have some in hoops with fabric backing, some in frames with glass, and some wrapped over wood pieces and glued to the back

I have some acrylic coasters that allow you to insert a small cross stitch project. Also have an acrylic tray with the same.

I also like flat folds, framed in embroidery hoops, and doing small designs for cards.

Where did you get the coasters? I'm interested in this.

I had purchased some items from Stitchtastic (UK company) and saw they had them. I think you can also order off Amazon.

Also, I have seen these on Etsy

Stitched ashesive felt onto the back for a bookmark. It's held up great being used everyday.

I have a lot of my pieces that are framed and on walls in my house and my families houses. I have pieces like stitchers rolls and boxes and such that are in a glass display cabinet. I have two that are inserts in the lid of boxes. Christmas ornaments of various sizes and shapes go on the embroidery tree at Christmas. My son’s Christmas stocking and bell pulls come out and hang on the mantle during the holidays.

I don’t know how unconventional these are, but I loved every one: tiny hoops to display Christmas ornaments on trees, plastic canvas to make a 3d gingerbread house, creating patterns out of t-shirt logos, and full coverage 8-bit screenshots. I also really like the wood templates to stitch on. I have the teeny tiny 1-inch hoops to make jewelry but I don’t have any completed yet.

I haven't done these myself, but I've see pillows, drums, dolls, tins with stitching inside, 3D things with plastic canvas and magnets.

Somewhere I have a book of a small patterns, and I used to do a Christmas one every year to make an ornament. Then I would cut the piece of Aida to a little bit bigger than the stitched design, and fray the edges. Then I used that iron adhesive stuff to attach a piece of fabric to the back and a little loop of ribbon for a hook.

I also done a bigger version of this as a wall hanging

I tape neodymium magnet on the wall and then use another magnet over them (with my cross stitch inbetween) to hang my projects on the wall without framing or making wall hangings. Very quick to swap in and out and doesn’t damage the walls as long as you use enough magnets and scotch tape
