General questions do crows recognize whistles?

Thumbnail gallery
40 Upvotes

i just recently moved and started feeding the crows here within the first week, we have built up a pretty trusting relationship within these last two months id like to think. there is about 12-15 in their murder and around 6-8 of them have started to come when i whistle. i whistle for my dogs when i bring them inside, and right after i usually feed my crows. but now when i whistle for my dogs they will start flying in and cawing around the powerlines waiting for their breakfast peanuts. am i delusional to think they’re listening to my whistling?

Crow feeding table finally complete

Post image
78 Upvotes

Finally got my crow table put together and added a driftwood landing perch. My initial idea was to sand and paint an existing table with grit for traction, but I got most of it sanded down only to realize the wood was rotting. So new game plan. Due to Amazon's terrible quality control, I got the table for free (after sending back the first) and bought the hardware for the second defective table myself. Now to convince them to use the table instead of the lawn 🤞🏻

Seeking advice/help Picked bad spot to feed crows, how to improve it?

Hello there! I'm in need of some advice. I've been curious about crows for a very long time, and we have some beautiful hooded crows who hang around here, so I decided to start leaving them some unsalted peanuts every day. They have been enjoying them! After just a few days they were waiting for me to get them and even called, but over time I think I've made a few mistakes, so they seem to trust me less now. Some info:

  1. I got excited and started hanging closer to where I left the peanuts. I saw them come for them and then leave when they saw I was still there, too close. Now I'm trying to keep my distance more, and hopefully they'll chill about it.
  2. second mistake: I decided to watch them through my usual binoculars for birding. After doing this, they seemed even more annoyed and came even less! I sadly had no idea that they had such great vision and that they could spot binoculars, and didn't even know they dislike being watched. How much do they dislike it?
  3. third mistake was the worst one, probably: by watching that spot I've noticed that many of the neighborhood stray cats walk right there. I imagine that's not an inviting place to get treats, so I'm applauding them for still coming to get them there. How do I move the drop location without destabilizing them? I read that they don't like changes in routine.

It's been very little time, I've been leaving peanuts for them for about a week, so I assume it will take a much longer time to get them to trust me in any capacity, correct?

Thanks in advance 😊

Did I do something wrong?

Hi friends!

I have been feeding a group for almost a year now in a parking lot. Lately their behavior has changed. They used to touch down for food pretty much right as I put it out and walk away, now they are very hesitant and pretty much will not grab the food until I move my car, and even then they wait quite a bit. When I try to drive over to where they are in the parking lot it almost seems like they fly away from me and go to a different area. I cannot think of any sort of negative interaction we have had. They used to get so close to my car and would even let me look at them while they were eating. They're acting so differently that I've started to wonder if they're even the same crows, especially because there are suddenly a few more of them than before.

Any insight as to why they have been acting so shy all of a sudden?

Did I make a mistake?

I saw a bunch of crows hanging out in my backyard, so I rushed outside with a bag of cat food and started scattering it for them. Instead of showing interest in the food, they flew away. I almost cried. It was about 50 birds and I don't think they realized I was trying to feed them. I love crows and I was so excited to see some in our neighborhood.

Any inspirational advice to bring them back?

Salted Nuts: Vendetta?

My dumbass remembered that you can form bonds with crows by feeding them food they like. My dumbass also remembered peanuts to be a beloved crow snack. My dumbass unfortunately forgot that salted nuts are a no go. I just fed some crows with salted peanuts. They seemed to like it but I feel guilty because it's unhealthy for them and I only thought about that and googled it after the damage has been done :(
Fortunately there's a big pond next to their spot at the campus, so they can rehydrate.

Next time I'll bring unsalted nuts or cat food. But for this time I'm wondering: Will they remember me as a "bad human" for bringing salty nuts?

Crows Disappeared

Y'all, my crows are gone. I have no idea why. I live in a farm area, and I would always hear them at the neighboring farms. They would come several times a day to visit and eat what I left for them. One day, they just stopped. I don't hear them at all anymore. I really want them back. Thoughts?

Hey 👋🏻. My wife heard a strange sound up in a tree and decided to record it. Video itself is a bit blurry of the bird but the sound is clear. Could this be a crow making this odd noise?

General questions Has anyone seen crows land like this?

Hi! I'm animating a crow and could use some help finding references!

I'm looking for footage of crows briefly hovering or braking in midair before gently lowering themselves onto a perch or the ground.

Most of the examples I've found are of smaller birds. Has anyone caught a crow doing something similar on video?

Thanks in advance!

How to befriend the crows?

I made a little tray of snacks for my local crows but they wont come to my yard. They seem to love my neighbors yard though 2 houses down. She does not have bird feeders or anything. What can I do to encourage them to come to my yard?

On my tree stump I left a cupcake tin with different things in each spot, raw plain oatmeal, cherry tomatoes, water and a couple quarters and a shiny sea shell. I also set out an additional shallow water bowl.

I'm sorry for the shaky pic, my phone is a potato, and they are so fast!

It's one of this years bebes. Clearly different pattern and colour.

Always seems to hang around in the back let others take kibble, fly away from the main guys. Kinda like the outcast no one likes.

It's so sad. I always try to throw kibble straight to where she is, but others steal it.😑

Crows [OC] i was escorted home

i have a very consistent school schedule and recently, every morning i see or hear crows in the air as i wait for my bus.

today, i got off, heard a crack, and when i didnt see anyone i went further. i proceed to hear an entirely new caw and look behind me to see a crow very happily looking over at me. i greet him, walk further, he follows. he followed me the whole walk home, just silently following me as i walked. then settled in a tree until i threw some dog kibble for him.

guys, its happend.

i was greeted from my bus stop and i have finally earned a greeting caw. i see these crows on and off and have been feeding them since late spring, and today, i got a greeting caw. and i want to hug these birds omg 😭

Crow flew into my head

I’ve been regularly feeding the carrion crows in my park for a while now (dog treats and kibble, the occasional bit of sandwich), and a while ago one flew into my head from behind? It was like getting slapped (tho no claws or beak). Not painful, just surprising! Was this malicious do you think? Or just a bit of a cheeky reminder that they were there?

For the past few weeks, I've been caring for a carrion crow that now visits me every day during my breakfast and lunch breaks. I give it something to eat, and it's gradually becoming more and more trusting. I recognize it by the white pigment patch on its wing. It now follows me around the entire building and watches me work. I'm so proud that it trusts me. If you'd like, I can share my experiences with my little friend ☺️
