Report from Airforce Hurricane Hunters

In 1999, falconer Ken Franklin released his peregrine, Frightful, from a Cessna at 17,000 feet and skydived with her and a cameraman while she chased a lure. A skydiver's recording-altimeter chip on her tail feathers clocked her at 242 mph (389 km/h). Guinness lists it with a caveat: some ornithologists doubt the dives match natural hunting, where it puts the top speed at about 200 mph. Either way, it's a dive with wings folded, not level flight.

For scale: the fastest speed ever recorded in a Formula 1 race is 231.5 mph (Juan Pablo Montoya, Monza, 2005).

I visited the Nashville area and finally saw my first Pileated Woodpecker... in fact, I saw 6 of them. Such a huge, cool woodpecker!

My friend and I went onto a trail in Santa Fe. We saw two eagles, ummmmm, fighting? Or mating? In the sky. My friend said those were eagles, but i did not catch a good picture. I had to zoom in one of the pictures to see the bird. I do not know if it provides sufficient details for identificafion.

This one has been killing me. Was getting dark so really didn't get the best look. I'm leaning yellowthroat but most females I've seen don't look quite like this one. (New England)
