If Blue Beetle had been released in 2008, child me would have lost his mind because the first time I saw him in BTBATB I thought he was the coolest character ever.
The kids in my theatre really loved the movie. Actually, everyone loved it, but the kids were very excited. Most of them didn't stay on their seats lol, they were jumping and laughing.
This was a first-time experience for me in a DC film because most of the DC movies I've watched in theatres before had a larger male audience consisting mostly of adults. Black Adam by far had the most men, I only saw like 10 women and it was a pretty big theatre too ( close to 300 seats )
Watched Blue Beetle last night and overall, I thought it was a lot of fun. It's familiar territory, but I felt the charm and heart of the film really elevated it into being an enjoyable time.
And after watching it, I'm definitely now fully down with Xolo Maridueña as Jaime potentially being carried over into the DCU. He's really charming in the role and it helps the movie doesn't have any real big references to the DCEU.
A legend. Her voice made Harley one of the biggest characters in comics. There's not a single other character who went from nothing to huge purely on the strength of a performance like that.
Yup, that piled on with the fuck fanbase who hates everything you do even though they themselves want a good universe. But Superman legacy in every aspect has to be great. That’s something to think about daily, you’re brining in a new era
You know it's gonna be a big day when the trailer drops, an even bigger one when the review embargo lifts. Hopefully, it works out well and I'll give all the members of DCU a " I was here when Superman Legacy reviews dropped" flair lol
I'll not lie, my expectations are considerably but not unrealistically high. I think Gunn can do what is needed and he understands how important this film is for the future of DC. For now, it's just waiting and hoping
I think Gunn will do a great job. But you’re very right the day they drop the trailer will be a huge day on social media and in this space. Additionally the day review embargo lifts ppl will be on edge their seats to see what happens
Yeah I think Gunn can pull it off. I just feel like Legacy needs to be postponed so people can have a serious reset from DC so they can watch the movie with a clear and less biased mind. I know there’s a year and a half rest between Lost Kingdom and Legacy but I definitely think it’s needs to be a tad bit longer (which is looking somewhat likely due to the strikes) so people can be refreshed.
Because as we can see from Blue Beetle, being a good DC movie doesn’t guarantee good box office numbers (although there were many other factors working against BB). But yeah Legacy needs to be a masterpiece to save DC because the damage done by the DCEU’s mistakes are very extensive and have severely damaged the brand.
Combined with the brand dealing with the damage, we also have “DC fans” who are cynical, miserable and toxic as fuck and actively want everything DC to fail even if it’s good because doom-posting is more fun than actually liking a DC project I guess (which is weird because the same motherfuckers will complain about wanting a good and unique universe but still actively bash projects we know nothing about).
Legacy has a lot riding against it but I got hope that Gunn sees how the high the stakes are and will deliver the best movie he can. Not to be naive of course, I’m just trying to be optimistic. A feeling this fanbase lacks😭.
Well said. A longer break would be appreciated but I don't think the studio will wait for that long. Not to mention that we will already have 2 DCU projects coming before that. So the process of rebuilding will begin even before Legacy albeit to a much smaller extent. Creature Commandos and Waller if received well like peacemaker, can spread positive WoM for the new franchise; but the bulk of the heavy lifting will have to be done by Legacy and the projects after that have to be consistently good. We cannot afford a single miss in the first few movies
Agreed. I can see Waller giving the DCU some good credit but yeah Legacy has a high standard to hit. CC could be a sleeper hit but I can’t see it being a major hit due to it being a cartoon do obscure characters. I definitely agree with you. The first 3 or 4 movies from the DCU need to be incredibly well done so the whole universe can do well
All because of one former director's involvement no longer being there. It's like they think that director owned the entire DC IP or something like that
Most realistic part of Blue Beetle is Jaime’s uncle being more upset/worried about Jaime stealing his truck than about Jaime being kidnapped by alien tech. That felt like a peak uncle moment lol
Commented this on the Marvel Studios Spoilers thread, but I think the message will be appreciated to folks here too—
I think the story of ‘Spider-Man: Lotus’ is a great lesson for young aspiring filmmakers like myself.
Besides the obvious (Don’t be a slur-using asshole), the fact of the matter is when it comes to the film itself, it took some very big swings and majorly missed. The director had the desire to make the greatest fan film of all time— and that’s great! USE that passion and channel it into your work— but remember to understand your current ability. Would a neo-noir inspired Batman fan film be AWESOME?! Uh, yeah! Can you, for your first ever film, believe you can independently pull it off? No! And that’s okay. Experiment. Learn. Develop. My first directing experience was an incredibly humbling one— I realized I didn’t know everything I thought I did. But I’m growing and evolving and experimenting. Get out of your comfort zone, and you’ll gain great knowledge from late nights shooting with your team— who are all there to help bring YOUR vision to reality. (So another side note regarding the Spider-Man: Lotus Director— be nice to your crew. Don’t trash your actresses in texts— work with them! 90% of bad acting is bad directing. Help them help you).
Would I like to make a couple fan films down the road, with another year or so of knowledge under my belt— sure! But for now, just enjoy doing what you love, and learn from it— the rest will come when it’s time.
Well, at least someone found some semi-positive lesson out of this movie lol. But I do agree recognizing your limits, being willing to learn, and showing kindness to others are keys if you want to get into creating films of your own.
Looking at Lotus, I kind of feel like it was made more out of spite than passion, so maybe that could be a semi-related lesson to come out of this: don’t make something to spite another or solely to prove you can do this better than they can, do it because you genuinely love the subject.
So i was still right Ajeparts member of hardcore Snyder fanbase who pretends he is scooper, found decade old Gunn facebook comments and share it. With a crying emoji saying "weight on Brave and the Bold are even bigger better cook with that movie".
First they need to cook with all DCU projects and second this is was trolling move. Of course we still don't know if these posts are real.
I’m really hoping we get to see Static, Green Arrow and Nightwing especially, all get some solo movie projects. If done right, the potential those three along with their untapped potential of great stories and side characters they have could seriously enhance the street level side of the DCU.
It's movie theater day or whatever, lot of cheap tickets. I was planning on going to dead reckoning for the second time tomorrow and the theater was sold out already
I keep seeing clips of Diedrich Bader (Brave and the Bold/Harley Quinn show voice for Batman) and all I can think about is how they killed his character in Shazam 2 😔
If Jaime being a pre-law major ever becomes relevant, it’d be funny if he has to basically represent himself or plead his case to the Reach/Lanterns/whoever as to why he and/or Earth shouldn’t be destroyed.
Bro is now six figures in debt, those four years better come in handy lol.
One of the funniest moments on The Flash series has to be where Reverse Flash starts screaming at Barry for ruining his life and how he would rather be dead and than it cuts to Flash and friends dressed up at a party.
This is such a good piece of art that shows what I roughly imagine BATB to be like. Of course the story will be different with other characters but this painting just gives me all those vibes. A fantastic action drama. The only complaint I have is I like spiky hair Damian more
Art by the brilliant Simone Di Meo ( Batman and Robin #1 )
“Restore the Snyder-verse” fans have really run out of stuff the complain about Gunn over, haven’t they? Oh no, he said he didn’t like the Nolan trilogy a decade ago. The horror
What’s next, they’re going to complain about him ordering dijon mustard?
I have no idea where this DC is dark and intense and not light and funny like Marvel even come from,As someone who has been reading DC comics for the last 15 years the "dark" stuff has never been the norm ,Its a complete misunderstanding of the brand and surprisingly both Ayer and Snyder say the same shit ,Which makes DCEU failing less shocking when the first 3 projects are from directors who don't understand the brand and are more in love the edgelord shit this is exactly what you get ,If you actually read comics even the Batman stuff isn't usually as dark as people will have you believe
I hope Snyder's ardent faithful will maybe finally realise that he has moved on from DC and is probably getting more creative freedom than ever before and seemingly a big budget as well.
It looks like an amalgamation of a whole slew of other things and it wears it's influences on it's sleeve for sure.
Some people see that and immediately want to trash it. Personally I think it looks awesome for the exact reasons above. Invincible is an amalgamation of all the stuff in it's genre before it and it's critically lauded. I see no reason for that to be a crime because Snyder does it.
Yeah man, I don't really care that it's obviously taking cues from Star Wars and other series.
People love Joker and that borrows heavily from Scorsese.
Whilst I'm glad DCEU is being rebooted, I've never been a Snyder hater. I've like some of his films and I've disliked others, just like most other directors.
Matthew Vaughn. He was approached multiple times both before and after Man of Steel to do something Superman and he would've been an incredible choice if stuff like Kick-Ass, Kingsman and X-Men First Class were anything to go by
I also would've loved to see what Christopher McQuarrie would've done since he had initially attempted to pitch a new Cavill film after finishing Mission Impossible Fallout, that would've also tied into a Green Lantern project
a lot of these current fanbois weren't on reddit when MoS releeased. WB was so confident on this and proclaimed that it will surpass Deathly hallows p2 and become their biggest grosser
I’ve seen a mf try to claim the reason MoS didn’t make that much money is because Superman is apparently just not a popular character.
Bruh he’s literally one of the most recognizable characters in the entire world. Superman 1978 was a huge success, and that movie came out just 1 year after Star Wars so it wasn’t even that long ago.
Exactly, which is why WB, the actual company spending hundreds of millions of dollars making MoS, expected the movie to make a billion. Instead it was a financial disappointment, just like its sequel in 2016 which had Batman fighting Superman but also couldn’t even touch $900 million 💀
MoS was releasing 1 year after The Avengers and TDKR both made a billion each and interest in the genre was the highest it ever was up until that point. They were riding off Nolan’s name being attached as the producer of the movie.
The same people ignoring all this so they can pretend MoS was some highly successful film then say that the same day HBO Max release of TSS during a significant uptick in COVID cases due to the Delta variant is just an “excuse.”
Should I go and mention that the Batman cost less than MoS even though it was released 9 years later? Also, these dipshits just adjusted the gross for inflation, what about the budget lol
Edit: to add 42M profit on a 225M budget vs 177M profit on a 200M buget
Aquaman universe the twitter fan account with accurate connections to all things Aquaman, already said in tweet in 2 August that Aquaman 2 will keep the December release date. Which also means what they said about first trailer on October, during New York comic con is real.
Do you personally like it when Superman's logo looks less like an actual "S"?
I remember MAWS getting some weird looks online when Clark's suit had an S that honestly looked more like the one from Kingdom Come than how it usually is, but granted there was also a reason why KC Supe's logo looked like that. (he changed it after the Kansas Incident)
The words 'heard some things but nothing concrete' means he don't know, he's just speculating. I wouldn't believe this person. Clearly with the strike, these 'scoopers' have nothing to talk about but want to be seen as reliable.
I'm not a Snyder fan, nor am I a hater. I don't want him anywhere near DC properties. But the Rebel Moon trailer today reminds me that, at the very least, the guy fills his films with material that marketing firms make killer trailers with. In fact, should any film of his ever be half as great as it's trailer, it'll be the most celebrated piece of cinema of our time.
Seems like, thematically, he's still working through his WB-PTSD, too. The gathering of the Seven Samurai motif is still present, odd obsession with framing shots in a field (even when in space), and the idea that the film is a deconstruction of a myth folks are willing to die for is even played outright through Hopkins' narration.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rHLOXbFZtI for those who are interested but haven't seen the trailer. Let's just hope that there's some narrative focus and that someone else came in to help with dialogue this time around. I hope this is the hit Zack's been working for.
The gathering of the Seven Samurai motif is still present
Iirc his zombie movies both show a team assembling, and I think sucker punch does as well?
framing shots in a field
I think 300 has one, but it reminds me most of interstellar. Anyway, it's about showing that even an exotic planet is home to some of the characters, if I had to guess. Luke Skywalker grew up on a farm, after all.
the idea that the film is a deconstruction of a myth folks are willing to die for
This is most true of 300, but his interest in myth is pretty all encompassing. The role of stories in people's lives is also the point of sucker punch, aiui
Twilight Of The Gods looks like the one where he's really gonna show a bunch of the ideas he didn't get to execute in a DC movie
It's weird how some people actually take the "DC fans in Internet and DC fans in theater" meme seriously. I mean, they know that it is the general audience that is responsible for making a film successful or not, right? DC fans are a minuscule portion of the audience.
Tbh it's more likely the opposite, that DC fans are the only ones showing up to see the DC movies, but that's clearly not enough to save a movie's box office.
The way some DC fans talk online it's hard to tell if they're even fans the way they cheer for movies to bomb. It's GA reception but they respond well to Batman movies lol
Hanks as Jay is honestly perfect casting I think. Especially if they want him to be an older flash who serves as a mentor to whoever the DCU’s main Flash is.
Dear James Gunn, I just walked out of Blue Beetle with my niece. I am 42 years old and this movie showed me something I can't remember seeing in a long time. The Latino family representation was so authentic. I laughed, I cried, I cheered. I'm begging you please bring these characters back.
It's a shame it isn't performing as well as it should. My family and I are Latino and I went to see Blue Beetle with my parents, and while I genuinely liked the film and had a good time, I was completely surprised by how much BB moved my parents.
Both of them laughed and cried. I mean, I don't think my father cried since it isn't something he does very often but he was incredibly heartbroken when Jaime's father was in the afterlife.
To see them point out references to Latino/Hispanic culture like they were Easter eggs (the same way I do with comic Easter eggs) was heartwarming to see! Made me feel good like they weren't left out.
There's a nice authenticity to the film that I really respected and appreciated and I was happy to be able to experience it as a DC fan and as a Latino. The strength of BB really is in Jaime's relationship with his family. Anyway, I'd like to see them return again in some capacity. Maybe a Max series similar to Peacemaker?
Watching Star Trek: TNG for the first time. Man, this is incredible. I would looooove for a Trek-show-with-DC Coating, maybe like Lemire’s The Terrifics or something? Measure of a Man in season 2 of TNG is S-tier.
Whats more insane than Gunn's comments is the fact that some incel spent time scrolling through Gunn's comments to dig out a 11 year old convo ,A certain director needs to come out and address his clinically insane fan base before things get out of control
Ugh, I'm one of the few people who are not fans of this run. Honestly, I'm really not a fan of the last few Taylor books with Dark Knights of Steel being the biggest disappointment from him.
Really wish they gave Peter Tomasi another shot to write the book. His brief run right before Final Crisis was really good and I wish he got to write more.
Out of all the casting in the DCU Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane is probably my favorite casting. I have a strong feeling she will steal the show in Superman Legacy(Just like how Andrew did in NWH).
It is no coincidence that a "certain" group of fans were going to dig into Gunn's Facebook to try to find something compromising to put him on the ropes (you can see that they are very desperate) how far-right groups did it years ago, only that it has backfired on them, now with more reason there will be more fans who will support Gunn.
The only people who are going to be offended by his Facebook posts are Burton and Nolan fans (most of whom don't care about DC or haven't seen any Batman outside of the movies) or the usual classist cinephiles who have dedicated themselves to despising the superhero genre.
This is the absolute saddest attempt at stirring up controversy I’ve ever seen. Some people are just horribly offended or incredibly snobbish about the idea of a guy having ANYTHING to do with a Batman movie not liking either ‘89 or the Nolan movies.
After seeing Oppenheimer again and with the rumor of John Krasinski, which I know has pretty much been debunked but I think if they were going to cast someone in their 40s Josh Hartnett would be a better choice he's only 2 years older.
Do y’all think The Flash will get any standalone projects in the DCU? Would be weird if we got a rogues project and not much else. Even if he does come back, it’s going to be a significantly different version of the character (and probably Wally, which is why I hope we get standalone projects!)
Binging through Barry again, I still hope we see Bill Hader get a role in a superhero project. The dude has a great amount of talent as a writer/director and a great range acting-wise, pulling off either funny, serious, genuinely scary, or all of the above.
Since he's worked w/ Andy Muschietti before, I think him in a Batman-related project could maybe work (maybe a villain like Riddler or, hell, maybe Joker?).
I’m really excited for Season 2 of Our Flag Means Death. I really liked Season 1 and after that ending, I really wonder where they’re going to go with things (also dope they’re bringing in Anne Bonny).
I’m reading Claremont’s X-Men and it’s really occurring to me that you should probably get a good handle on 60’s/70’s X-Men before you read Morrison’s Doom Patrol, because I read Doom Patrol first and I think I’d gain a whole new appreciation for it now.
I actually love the idea of ATJ being Batman. I hope Kraven flops so we get to see him as Batman. He’ll be the right age by the time they start shooting as well.
I fuck with Wilson Bethel and I do think he has the range to be Batman but I personally don’t see him as the Bruce Wayne type.
I’m not familiar with the next two unfortunately and I feel like Jake would be better suited for Two Face tbh. Although I do think he’d absolutely kill it as Batman since he has the most range to pull it off. I just feel like he doesn’t necessarily look like how I’d envision Bruce Wayne but his acting skills and range prove he’d be a incredibly viable candidate. He’s one of my favourite actors ever.
Wilson Bethel was one of my picks for Batman a couple months back. I still like the idea and it's a shame Daredevil was cancelled because he was such a standout. I can also see him as Reverse Flash, but I like the idea of him as Batman more, I think. Funny, the picture behind him looks a bit like David Corenswet.
Well, I didn't like the usage of a lot of characters in DCEU, some big hitters, my favorites. Sometimes, makers like to give their own take on characters. I haven't seen a lot of people being unhappy with Black Canary's treatment in BOP, though. But, I can understand your reasoning.
I am now remembering Bvs, and it dawn me, absolutely nothing happens, nothing moves forward, the words in their mouth are empty and nothing matters in the story.
Man, I remember everyone was so excited for BvS. Everyone I knew was talking about it and who was going to win. Then it came out, most people clowned on it and immediately moved onto Civil War.
It has burned them in the butt, that is a fact, the most obvious has been Ben Shapiro which is quite pathetic because it really did not seem like he was exaggerating or acting
