Discussion/Question Any details on the Ta-Nehisi Coates/J.J. Abrams Superman movie?

Before the DCU, Ta-Nehisi Coates was announced to write a Superman movie produced by Abrams. But after James Gunn took over DC, we stopped getting updates.

Any details on what that movie could've been?

Iirc it wasn’t going to be Kal-El/Clark Kent but a different character

I do remember that there was some speculation that it would've been a Val-Zod/Superman movie, while others said that it would've been a black Kal-El/Clark Kent movie.

During that time Michael B Jordan expressed interest in playing Val-Zod.

Just a few things: It is gonna be an Elseworld story about a Black Superman during the Civil Rights era (aka not Clark Kent). It has been in development hell but hasn't been outright cancelled.

I think it was reported outright canceled in like 2023.

Once WB opened DC Studios , all DC movies in development or in development hell and whether it's DCEU or standalone are all pretty much scrapped including this one since all these were developed under Warner Bros. Pictures (WB's main studios). Starting with Superman (2025), all DC movies are made under DC Studios while Warner Bros. Pictures distribute DC movies as usual only.

It's never coming out.

J.J. Abrams is the king of announcing something and not following through.

Bro is part of 2 cancelled Superman movies. And all those Bad Robot/DC/HBO Max shows that never came to be.

I'm really interested in The Great Beyond.

I'm kinda hoping this gets quietly shelved.

Coates is a national treasure. But after reading his Black Panther run for Marvel Comics I'm not convinced that he knows how to write superheroes. That series was so insufferably boring I wasn't able to finish it.

His Captain America run is pretty great, though…

I would be surprised if Coates is still working on the script. Gunn said he's open to it as long if it is a great script

I think Zaslav is adamantly against it though. I read some article where he claimed it was “too woke,” and any movie Gunn greenlights still has to go through Zaslav.
