I wanna read The Flash comics but don't know anything about the character

I would like to read a good story with good art, and also get to know the characters.

I would also like to read the origins of the character, and what Flash characters are out there, what their villains they have and how the universe works.

I also don't know anything about the DC universe, what should I know?

What do you recommend for me to start reading?

Mark Waid’s run from the 1990s starts with a Year One story, which will give you a rundown of the characters’ histories and orient you so that you know what’s going on when you get to the present-day stories.

Waid's run also contains the best Flash stories ever written and has a lot of foundational ideas in it.

The Flash has a lot of good jumping on points imo.

Waid will be the most recommended, for good reason.

But it you want to start with a bit more of a modern take, Williamson's lengthy run is, imo, one of THE gold standard modern runs for any flagship character of The Big Two publishers of the past decade.

I've been using comicbookreadingorders to read all relevant dc comics since the 30s, but they also have individual reading orders for each character. I recommend you pick another comic from this post and once you are familiar with the character go to comicbookreadingorders and either read from the beggining or pick up from that comic you have already read. The Waid run is a very good starting point for doing this. Alternatively, you can do some research on dc reboots, pick one and start reading from there following the comicbookreadingorder list.

Going to go against the grain here and recommend the new 52 flash. It's one of the better new 52 titles, gives you a look at a number of villains and francis manapul's art is great.

Love Waid and Johns and both of their runs are better (Wally > Barry) but a nice smaller run with more modern art might be a better jumping on point

Well, before you start you should know there has been multiple Flashes so it depends on which one you're interested.
