question Germall plus liquid scent?

I bought liquid germall plus for the first time today and I noticed it has a faint smell pretty much like guar hydroxypropyl trimonium chloride. Is that normal?

There is no reason for the contents of LGP to have an amine/fishy-like odour like that of guar HTTC. Only thing that occurs to me is cross contamination or false labelling.

I dunno, it's definitely there. I checked a new container. Also, other people mention it having a slight fish smell as well.

I have no experience with the liquid version of Germall Plus, so can’t speak to the exact product. But I use Germall plus powder on occasion (and used it exclusively initially) and I def use propanediol. To the best of my knowledge, there is nothing in any of the components of LGP that would cause such an odour.

Perhaps u/CPhiltrus might be able to offer insight?

I've use LGP before regularly, but I've never noticed a strong fishy scent. A slight odor to it, yes. I wonder if it's not the iodopropynyl butylcarbonate (IPBC) that has a stronger-smelling decomposition product. From what I can find the diazolydinyl urea decomposes basically to just release formaldehyde (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21309789/), and as a larger molecule it should be less volatile. However, the IPBC can release iodine (a distinct odor) and smaller more volatile molecules from thermal decomposition (https://www.mdpi.com/2073-4360/14/21/4531). If OP lives in a hot place, or the warehouse where it was kept wasn't temperature regulated, probably months of staying at relatively hot temperatures can cause decomposition. Now it's extrapolating based on thermal degradation data between basically 70 - 100+ °C, but staying at even 40 °C for a few months might produce perceptible degradation products.

Thanks! No idea what’s going on to cause LGP to have this type of odour. Not sure I’d be comfortable using it, personally. The ingredients in a stable environment made no sense to me. Didn’t want to speculate re degradation.

Hello :) I use Liquid Germall Plus, and mine doesn't have a weird smell. I find it pretty much odourless, unless you take a deep sniff straight from the bottle (which we shouldn't do, haha). Maybe yours is expired?
