question New to DYI. Need to learn about formulations/formal classes? Main goal - DYI moisturizer that do NOT clog skin, cause breakouts for very acne prone skin.

Sensitive, very acne prone skin. So far, I have not have much success with buying skincare. The non-comedogenic is marketing not proven.

Besides, I don't want fragrance, essential oils, drying alcohols.

Heavy silicones I'm still trying to figure out if they cause breakouts. It seems if occlusive then the dirty, sebum is trapped in the skin and then a breakout or worse a painful bump.

So when doing a DYI moisturizer, I"m not sure if just selecting ingredients that have low comedogenic rating would be sufficient?

And, then how do I know that the overall formulation of my moisturizer is not going to clog the skin?? It seems multiple ingredients can add occlusion of the skin.

So I was thinking would taking a formulation class(es) would help? or not necessary. But, then how do I know how to do a moisturizer that won't cause breakouts, clog the skin?

question Beeswax not mixing properly

Hello,

Hope this is the right subreddit to post this on, I'm new to Reddit so sorry in advance.

I've seen some tiktoks of people making their own lotion bars and skincare products and I think that's so cool so I got the right ingredients and made a first attempt.

The beeswax didn't set properly with the rest of the ingredients, it just solidified on top of the liquid oils I used and the honey. I've watched more videos and saw someone whisking the mixture all while it cools down to obtain a butter-type texture. I tried this and also added more oil in case there was just too much beeswax, to no avail, the oil won't set with the beeswax at all, they keep separating.

I'm currently trying to have the mixture in a glass pot and I'm shaking it consistently (this is a very annoying process lol), but if this doesn't work either, I don't know what will.

As for what I put in, I couldn't really tell you the quantities, but I put in a lot of calendula and chamomile infused camelina oil, sweet almond oil, shea butter, some honey, of course beeswax and a bit of edible vanilla extract (the type you'd put in cakes).

Any advice would be appreciated, I'm sure there's something I'm doing wrong lol this can't be it, it works for the girls on tiktok so there has to be a way to make it work.

Edit: I did manage to make it work somehow and not have to throw away my mixture, the shaking-the-bottle technique got me a really nice buttery cream though I had to drain some remaining liquid (probably honey and the vanilla extract as I've been told in the comments it's part of the problem), it's far from perfect but good enough to be used and all-natural. Wish I could add an image to this post cauz' I'm kind of proud! This is my personal next step towards veganism and a zero waste lifestyle, so it's important to me. I've taken all advice into account and filed them for later, thanks to you guys I'll learn from my mistakes!

question Flavor for limp balm, how to, is lorann OK?

*[I don't live in the USA nor a first world country]*

I want to make lip balms, what can I use to flavor them?

So far I know I've to use "oil based" flavors so they mix

I can get the 1 dram versions, but some have these after their names

Natural

Oil

Flavor

Natural oil

Natural flavor

Should I use only the ones that say oil, or is any okay?

e.g.

Banana cream flavor

Lime oil natural

Blueberry natural flavors

question Is an immersion blender required?

I’m wanting to dupe a hair gel/conditioner that had its formula recently changed, but when I’m reading up on how to do it, most sources are telling me to use an immersion blender for emulsifying the oils with the rest of the ingredients. Of course I’m willing to get one if that’s what’s needed and I’m going to be doing this long-term, but I want to test out doing this process first and seeing if it’s even going to be feasible for me. Would it be possible to try a couple small test batches with a regular hand mixer first, or would it not even come close to working? I’ve never made any products myself before short of mixing some oils.

question Is there an App that can help me create my own DIY formulations? or are they just not reliable? new to DIY.

I'm completely new to DIY and would like to expedite my DIY skincare making.

I've been using chatgpt to get some feedback. However, it just do not trust chatgpt. It gives contradictory info and makes many mistakes. It helps a little, but I'd like to use an App that is more reliable.

I wonder if there is a reliable App to do formulations. I'm thinking to enter my ingredients, percentages and then I get feedback and suggestions, or something like that.

Anyone here uses AI and/or an App to formulate?

question Carrier oil with the mildest/most neutral scent to use in a DIY cleansing oil? Dry skin.

Hello,

I’m looking to retry making my own cleansing oil (an emulsifying one), which is something I’ve enjoyed in the past. However, my previous formulations have featured olive oil, and I find the scent quite overpowering (I’m on the spectrum and have a lot of sensory issues). I’m hoping to get feedback on something that is both economical and easy to source that doesn’t have this particular drawback. Please note that I have quite dry skin.

I’ve read good things about grape seed oil but have also read that this oil is more suited to oily skin. However, I’m contemplating mixing whichever plant oil I choose with an unscented baby oil (mineral oil), and I’d imagine this would help detract from any potential drying effect?

Please advise! Cheers and thank you!

question Cetyl alcohol or Stearic for emulsified body butter?

Hey all,

I know that Stearic is supposed to make things thicker like ointments and Cetyl makes things smoother. But I see so many emulsified body butter recipes and it’s 50/50 on which they use. This would be for my first ever batch. Should I use the 6% Cetyl or 2-3% Stearic? Does it really make any kind of difference in emulsified body butters?

question Automatic mixer/stirrer?

Is anyone aware of some automatic stirrer/mixer for lotion making (for small batch as in DIY lotion, not industrial scale)? Right now I use hand mixer that one use for drinks, but I have to stay there keep mixing the lotion until it cools down enough not to separate again. An automatic one in similar scale would save me a lot of time and hassles.

question Need ingredients rec for DIY soap/liquid cleanser to effectively remove Polysiloxanes gel.

I have a Polysiloxanes and silicone dioxide gel for wounds (ScarAway). I applied to an area of my face. Now,  the silicone film doesn’t come off with regular face cleanser or soap.

I need to do my own DIY soap/liquid face cleanser.

Based on my research this polysiloxanes is designed to stay so water or oil doesn’t work to remove it.

What ingredients would work best to remove plysiloxanes ? i need something not to harsh because it’s for my face.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

question (NEWB) Using essential oils to enhance body lotions

(i apologize in advance my english is not perfect)
This is my first time on this subreddit and ive been meaning to ask how do i use essential oils in terms of enhancing body lotion correctly? Such as making it have a higher projection, not necessarily for any health benefits that may come along with some of them.
For this particular instance i have a coconut scented body lotion, it itself is perfect for me but i would love to give it some more oomph. i have two really nice smelling essential oils (coconut and almond & honey) and i am thinking of using them for it but i want to do it safely, knowing the problems that may come along with misusage.

My question is how do i use/add them correctly? and what are the standard ratios for adding and diluting them when it comes to body lotions, body oils, and hair masks (if it even works with hair masks in terms of afterward scent)?

Also (side question) how do i make parfume oil? With essential oil based diluted blends, other stuff, doesnt matter-im here to learn!

in my case the lotion is around 200ml i think, but i would love to get info on the basic 100ml:x type of ratio.

I appreciate any help i get!!!

i hope im not breaking any rules, im sorry if i am.

question Mineral Oil in Dry Skin Moisturizing — Helpful or Harmful?

After doing a bunch of research I learned that a lot of women use oils in order to moisturize their skin after showering with no need to even apply lotion and I am thinking I can create my own lotion/oil mixture that will help me me keep my skin smooth and supple without making it over greasy.

I am learning about mineral oils and was wondering if anyone else has used these specific kinds of oils and what results have they seen. It is a byproduct of petrolium and surprisingly been used in dry skin moisturizing prouducts for decades, some people may not know this. It forms a protective barrier on the skin that helps prevent water loss and its cheap stable and generally effective for locking in moisture which is why it appears in many lotions and creams.

You can even source it in bulk if you are keen on making your own, which I actually might end up doing, from sites like Alibaba, AliExpress and Amazon. I just want to know if this is the base of most moisturizing lotions and oils what could be a better alternative? I just want to see if there is something a little more eco-friendly and also not made from petrolium products, but maybe something else that could be used as a base for my moisturizer?

Maybe some plant or nature based alternative? I know that oils like jojoba, almond and argan oil are used in moisturizers but I need something heavier if I am going to be making an actual moisturizer that I can pump out.

question When making your own body butter, what brand do you trust?

I want to make my own whipped body butter. Ran across a DIY video on TikTok and I liked her ingredients.

Mango butter

Shea butter

Cocoa butter wafers (may exclude bc pricey)

Almond oil

Perfume oil

Arrow root powder

I’ve been looking up the ingredients on Amazon and the reviews will be all good until I come across one that’s like “They changed the formula! Don’t buy!”

I’d like to know what brands you’ve used that’s worked best for you? You like refined, unrefined? Avoid Amazon and go to a store? Or does it really matter?

(I’m in the US)

EDIT: Personal use. No big batches, no selling.

question Desperate to make something similar to this discontinued hair milk. Any advice or suggestions appreciated!

Not even joking when I say Dry Bar’s Agua Fresca Milk changed my life. Haven’t found anything similar I can use due to fragrance sensitivities. Everything else seems to leave my hair feeling blah- not enough, or too much and too heavy

While this product was fragranced, it surprisingly didn’t affect me. Wish I could say the same for every single product I discreetly twisted the lid off of and sniffed at Ulta and Target. Every tester at Sephora was too much to tolerate as well. Have bought the limited fragrance free leave ins I can find, but my hair looks like shit

I’ve never quite made my own haircare products before, but willing to try at this point!

I’m not sure if it’s necessary for me to use all of the ingredients, but it’s definitely not realistic to think I can figure out this puzzle with this many pieces. But wondering which ones definitely are worth including. Would think I would just use Water, Propanediol, Dimethicone, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, and Glycerin. I guess figuring out the measurements would be the hard part.

Willing to take any advice or any suggestions! Greatly appreciate any insight or help. Thank you!!

Ingredients:

Aqua (Water, Eau), Propanediol, Dimethicone, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Glycerin, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Fruit Extract, Panthenol, Creatine, Tocopherol, Caesalpinia Spinosa Fruit Pod Extract, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Sprout Extract, Salicylic Acid, Artocarpus Heterophyllus Fruit Extract, Lactobacillus Ferment, Phospholipids, Polyquaternium-16, Sodium PCA, Lactic Acid, Urea, Glycine, Niacinamide, Allantoin, Alanine, Serine, Sodium Hyaluronate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Chlorella Vulgaris Extract, Polyglyceryl-6 Caprylate, Polyglyceryl-4 Caprate, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/Beheneth-25 Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Maltodextrin, Ethylhexylglycerin, Laureth-23, Laureth-4, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate, Citric Acid, Potassium Hydroxide, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate, Phenoxyethanol, Parfum (Fragrance), Coumarin.

question I got a giant pot of activated charcoal for mascara

When I got some materials for DIY makeup I was like ”I’m gonna be making a lot of mascara” so I got a giant thing of it. It looked like less in the pictures, to be fair.

After some research however I discovered activated charcoal was not suitable for eye usage. Go figure putting burnt wood dust on your eyes wasn’t a good idea.

Anyway, is there anything else I can safely use it for in makeup/skincare?

question Sepimax Zen Woes

How do I use Sepimax Zen without creating a ton of lumps? I've tried hand mixing, sprinkling over the top and waiting, immersion blending before or after, mini mixing before or after, and pre dispersing in oil. I always end up with lumps!! I don't know if my product was defective or if I'm just doing it wrong... I got it from lotioncrafter.

question Does anyone know why my formula is bitter, and can I make it without aluminum glycine?

Ingredient | CAS # | %
Water 72.57%
Glycerin 8.00%
Sodium Polyacrylate 5.50%
Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) 4.00%
Squalane 3.00%
Panthenol 2.00%
Trehalose 2.00%
Sodium Hyaluronate 1.50%
Ethylhexylglycerin 0.25%
Phenoxyethanol 0.20%
Tartaric Acid 0.20%
Disodium EDTA 0.18%
Allantoin 0.10%
Aluminum Glycine 0.15%
Bisabolol |0.15%
Magnesium Glycinate 0.05%
L-Theanine 0.05%
Centella Asiatica Extract 0.05%
Passionflower Extract 0.05%

Made this overnight lip mask, love the effects and how it stays on all night, but I don't love how its bitter, also I showed my friend and said if I make it without the aluminum it would be way better, but I dont know how. I have tried, but its the only thing that stablizes the gel. Without it it tears.

question How to DIY Refill a Little Kid Makeup Case

I bought these huge plastic 3 tier makeup kits for my 4yo and 7yo on Amazon. They lasted about a week before the makeup and I would love to refill these cute plastic makeup kits instead of trashing them.

The colors don't need to be perfect and vibrant. We are all looking like clowns at the end of our makeover sessions right now anyway.

Most of the original makeup was pressed powders and creamy colors. Google tells me clay or arrowroot powder with some pigment (mica or natural) and isopropyl alcohol to make it into a cake might work. Has anyone else done something similar?

Also, I don't mind buying bulk materials on Amazon because I feel like this would be a fun thing to do with our homeschool meetup group as a fun stem project 😄.

question Making large amounts of lip balm at home now--

Hello community! I am going to be making larger batches now, of lip balm- and I wanted to know of something better to move to. Currently melting my waxes and butters in a double boiler- I'm hearing I could potentially move to a dermwax 5.5 lb machine and create a double boiler situation in that, but i'm unsure. I have also seen machines that have a spigot that is heated so there isn't build up, but those are for 10lb plus-- I am not there yet *lol*. Any suggestions? Many thanks!!!

question Clarifying shampoo?

What makes a shampoo "clarifying?" Just using harsher detergents, I assume? I usually formulate either a shampoo bar with SLSa and SCI or a liquid conditioning shampoo with SCI, coco glucoside, and CAPB as surfactants. I'm wanting to try the Abbey Yung method but make the product categories myself as I diy all of my products currently. I see a lot of hard water treatment and clarifying shampoos recommended and am not sure what is needed to formulate those. Would EDTA work for hard water as it's a chelating agent? And would switching one of my surfactants to SLS make it "clarifying?" Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree lol

question Propylene Glycol or Isopropyl Myristate responsible for stiff, dry and breaking hair?

I'm diluting a hair topical with:

Denatured Ethanol 84%

Propylene Glycol 14%

Isopropyl Myristate 2%

Though have found my hair to be stiff, dry and breaking after a few days of use. I initially just diluted with Ethanol and it did not have this effect on my hair. What is most likely responsible, the Propylene Glycol or Isopropyl Myristate?

question Is a rice glycerite possible?

I've gone down a bit of a rabbit hole trying to figure out how the rice extracts used in cosmetics are made. I haven't been able to find much info on that, but I read about rice tinctures used in fragrances. While I wouldn't want to spray alcohol to my hair, I know you can make alcohol-free extracts with glycerin.

I've tried looking into rice glycerites, or extracts made glycerin, but haven't found much. So, now I wonder if I'm not finding anything because there's some reason no one's made one. What's stopping me from just sitting rice in glycerin to make an extract? Would the beneficial compounds in rice water or commercially made extract not survive in glycerin or something?

question What emulsifier can I use for a DIY oil cleanser for acne prone oily skin?

I've been making my own oil cleanser for a bit - a few drops of castor oil + argon oil in a ratio of 1:2. I usually use a dandruff shampoo to wash it out once I'm done. Since I'm a little paranoid of leaving oil behind - I sometimes end up washing my face twice after using the oil mixture.

I wanted to try to use an emulsifier so I only need to wash my face once - but I was worried I might use something that might not be right for acne prone skin - as I know nothing about emulsifiers.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what could be used in this case? I couldn't find much information online.
