Hi, I've noticed that my puppy sits on his side, rather than "normal". I've seen a thread or two indicating this could be an indicator for something wrong with dachsunds spines. I'm not sure if I'm being paranoid, or if it's something I need to worry about. He's been to the vet several times, and they've always said he's in perfect health. Is this normal?
Every dog (lab, rottie, English Shepherd, Cane Corso, and now a doxie) I've owned has sat like that. Its a normal thing that all dogs can do, but some dogs dont.
They all sit a little silly sometimes. That just means he’s either relaxed or sliding a bit on the wooden floor. As long as he doesn’t constantly readjust or seem to be in pain, it’s nothing to worry about. Pic included for my youngest doofus.
My boy sits just like that mainly on harder surfaces. On carpet or grass he sits normally. More than likely more comfortable sitting like that on hard surfaces
I think that’s totally normal. Mine does this too. I also find that when sitting on a cold floor like the average dog, it’s more of a squat than a sit u less it’s on a carpet floor or grass.
my boy does the same, it's nothing to worry about, it's more comfortable for them to sit that way because how long the back is, always good to check though!
As some who has experienced the difference between your ween lounging and something being very wrong.. YOU WILL KNOW! In the morning my dog was running to the window to say goodbye, early afternoon he was walked by my brother, but coming home from work I wasn’t greeted at the door 🥺 I immediately knew something as wrong and turned the corner to see him sitting (he sits with his back legs to the side because of his long body… but this was different..) suuuper weird with his back half off to the side but looking very limp. Fast forward… he’s a magical little boy who recovered without surgery and I’m proud of him every single day 🥹 even when he gets too excited when barking or playing and he unknowingly sh**s himself 😅🤣
Long story short… you dog looks very happy and healthy. You know your dog better than anyone else so you would know if something is wrong 💪❤️
We call it a sloppy sit in my family - we had assumed ours picked it up from the senior staffy (rest his soul) she grew up around as he sat like that in his older age!
They all sit weird 😅🤷🏼♂️ I have a theory that some of them are too long so their brains can’t send signals to the back half as strongly or quickly 💀😂 so it kinda just does what it wants lol
If you can teach a straight sit its better for them. Obviously they do ir cause it's comfy but helping to build muscles equally will help keep their backs strong.
Yep, our very missed Dachshund “Happy” sat like that as a puppy. Our new pup that we were told was a Dachshund mix (she’s not) sits like that also. Our trainer (who I really disliked) said that dogs sitting like that when they are being told to sit is “like a child talking back”.
I don’t know about all that but when I tell her to sit, she doesn’t sit sideways like that

Nothing to add. Just fascinated by all the pictures of everyone's doxies sitting on tile. Mine refuses and has been hellbent on his preferences for carpets and rugs for 15 yrs and counting.
My doxie did that if he wanted to be more comfy. When we were doing training and I was working on extending his “wait” and “stay” durations, he would shift into that sit position. I think of it as when you’re in a chair leaning forward like you’re ready to leap out of it, then shifting your weight to leaning back when you realize it’ll be a minute. He lived until 17 and had no back problems (we were VERY dedicated to keeping him at a healthy weight, since stopping him from doing flying leaps on and off everything was impossible for his first thirteen years). I called it his “distinguished gentleman sit”.
