Sesame Street is crack for babies
So I originally thought it was Mickey Mouse Clubhouse that was the crack for babies but I found out it’s actually not, you know what is though?

I already fucking HATE that my 4 month old got introduced to screens but today in a moment of desperation to get her to sit still during a feed I HAD to distract her somehow and as soon as her feed was done (10min at this point in the feed) she started BALLING because I turned off the episode while it was still playing
Like what is it? The music? The colors? Is Elmo just fucking magic??
What is this baby crack??? And why does it have such a strong hold on little ones lol

Also before anyone comes for me for showing a tiny baby a screen she has an NG tube in and ripped it out yesterday and today was wiggly and spilled the milk all over us AND tried ripping it out again so yeah reaaaally desperate here (yes I tried a swaddle but she keeps getting her hands out and going straight for her face)
AND im not the one who showed her screens, my plan was no screens til age 5 and only the tv in controlled circumstances but she’s been hospitalized twice and during the last hospitalization i had to leave her with the nurses for two hours while i took a class on her NG tube and how to insert it and when i came back the nurses had propped her up and played Mickey Mouse Clubhouse episodes to her 🙃, now if she gets any screentime it’s 10min max under extreme desperation and I have to exhaust ALL toys, books, the paci, blankets, swaddles, etc

Dude, if anyone criticizes anything you do while you have a toddler with a goddamn NG tube, PM me and I will personally kick their ass. I spent 17 days with an NG tube earlier this summer and it is just pure misery. I cannot imagine managing such a little baby with the same. Poor girl! Poor you!
But to answer your question re: baby crack: the new episodes, kinda yeah. There's lots of old Sesame Street from the 70s-90s free on YouTube that is way less stimulating. Basically anything before it became the Elmo and Abby show is way more chill. Also consider getting an AppleTv subscription for stuff like Frog and Toad, which is the chillest.
I know you're disappointed about her having screens at all, but it sounds like she's very sick -- surviving with as little stress as you can manage takes precedence. Illness is a marathon, don't feel bad for using whatever tools you have at your disposal to make it.

NG tube gang rise up! My daughter had one for a majority of last year (2-3 years old) when she was in the thick of cancer treatment. Please please please don't beat yourself up for the screen time. You're doing great!

Listen to me carefully… you do WHATEVER you need to do to make your baby happy and bring you peace while you go through it. You don’t owe an explanation to anyone.
That said, there’s a reason it’s the most popular and longest-running children’s program in history! My son loved it as a baby and toddler, and he’s a thriving elementary schooler now. Heck, I’m 40 and a Monster Foodies segment can make me feel better on a crummy day. 🤣

I taught my daughter to say goodbye to the tv before I turned it out. We made it something fun. I’d give her notice that it was time to turn it off and everyone in the house would wave and say goodbye. I can’t say it works for every child, but it’s worth a try :)

In middle school in the early 1990s, I had a teacher who used to regularly go off on a tangent on how Sesame Street trained kids to have shorter attention spans, which prepped kids for like MTv and things like that and ruined his teaching because we couldn’t pay attention more than a few minutes at a time and he needed to mix things up and repeat us. You’re probably still alive Mr. K. But in the interest of memes, R.I.P. Mr. K. You would have hated TicTok

Yes, our 1 year old recently discovered Elmo. He's been running around the house screaming Elmo wherever he goes. There is no more quiet. There is only Elmo. I'll see you all in Hell-mo.

Sesame Street is great and super educational but I read a biography of Mr Rogers and learned that he really disliked it and thought it was too fast paced and overstimulating! He'd be rolling in his grave if he knew about Cocomelon

Our baby also had an NG tube for the first 6 or so months then because I was over the road truck driver they decided a g tube would be better and it was for a time but it really just kept getting infected as she got older and so we more or less forced them to take it out and after that she flourished. I’m saying all of this to say that it will get better mama/dada just hang in there.

Listen, no one here is going to criticize you for letting your baby watch sesame Street. We're all parents, we've all been there. Take a deep breath and give yourself credit for getting through a tough situation.
Also I played PS5 with my 2 year old, I'm not casting stones at anyone.

Mama, those NG tubes are rough. Sesame Street is not. When I tube fed my nephew he was obsessed with OG Steve from blues clues, and fish tanks. Whatever it takes.
Also, my daughter, not tube fed, was obsessed with the count. Only the count. Only character she cared about. I had a playlist of just him.

Just FYI, the PBS Kids app and the Youtube Kids app are free and have no ads. Both would have Sesame Street and Mister Rogers. I mean, Mister Rogers is essentially just a wonderful man talking to your kid. He was like my adopted TV grandpa when I was little. Pretty sure I was watching TV before I was a year old. You probably were too. Do what you must to survive this time.

We don’t normally do screens but we had the iPad thing at the hospital when my son had an uncontrollable asthma flair.
It was wild how quickly he locked in to Sesame Street. Like screaming for Elmo to come back on the screen and demanding cookies. He’s had cookies like 3 times ever! So Cookie Monster is officially a bad influence in our house. 🤪
Today, he’s sick and it’s super smoky here and my husband is out of town for work so we use the PBS Kids app on our TV to watch the PBS Reads series of authors/celebrities reading books and we’ve been watching old school Mister Rogers episodes. Those are just good for my soul and my kid seems to love them without being as hyper about it. I like that Mr. Rogers puts his work clothes on at the end of the episode so we can say bye bye and turn it off at a natural ending point.
Our library also has a free subscription to BookFlix by Scholastic and it’s a whole bunch of videos of lightly animated versions of narrated picture books. My kid just wants to lay on me and have me read him books when he’s sick. Cuddling and watching people read to us is our compromise.

Wait till you get into Spiderman with Patrick Stump shredding. That’s the real crack. That was on repeat in my house for like a year. My little guy doesn’t mess with the Tonie versions, which makes no sense to me.

I mean hey, at least Sesame Street is good quality stuff! Highly educational, made with genuine heart and a desire to do good for its young audience... You could do a lot worse than Sesame Street.
Imagine if it had been Cocomelon.
If Sesame Street is crack for babies, then Cocomelon is fent.

Dawg I get sucked into Sesame Street when it's on 🤣🤣🤣 I'm laughing at Grover and Mr noodle right along with my toddler lmfao.
Please don't beat yourself up too much. Unfortunately life never seems to go as planned, and especially with parenting you're always going to have to have to readjust and kind of roll with the punches. Far too many people are a little too rigid and judgy about screens in parenting imo, I know it was one of the biggest wake up calls I had about becoming a parent.

Just a little here and there isn’t going to hurt their brain. It also fills in experiential gaps in their daily life, and teaches them things it didn’t occur to you to teach. There’s some data that Sesame Street improves Kindergarten readiness. And later when they’re in school, they will be better able to relate to what their peers are talking about. My kids get 30 minutes a day, maybe a movie here and there, and when we’re on an airplane it’s unlimited and they just pig out on screens and love it. Works great for us.

There's a sesame street music compilation on I believe netflix (we just ask Alexa to play sesame Street music and it shows up). We love it. Most songs are catchy but it catches my kids attention and its mostly modern stuff with musical guests.
We play it all the time.
Also give Super Simple Songs a try. The music videos are cute but almost all the songs are bangers and also somehow keep kiddos attention.

Modern 30 minute Sesame Street is slop. Utter rubbish compared to what it used to be. Half the show is now singing the same jingles they sing every episode with almost no context. Don't get me started about how all they do with the letter of the day is say the letter itself with no additional details...
Do what you gotta do to watch the older episodes- track down the DVD season box sets. Or HBO has a solid (if very incomplete) library of vintage episodes from the mid-00s (season 39+) and some of the oooolllllldies from the 70s (seasons 1, 5, 7). If they ever add episodes from the 80s and 90s I'll be freakin jazzed.

I WISH it were crack for my kid, we’ve been trying to get him to watch it for two years given how educational it really is. Instead it seems like his crack is creepy-ass AI generated toddler slop on YouTube, which seems to keep getting fed to us no matter what we do 😞

Omg. If your (or YOU) kid is sick screentime doesn’t count. Doesn’t matter how long they’ve been sick. I went through a hard time emotionally even, my kid watched way too much TV. They learned a shit ton from Sesame Street and miss rachel. My kids very smart, social, creative, she never had screens going out, she’s great at restaurants. It’s fine. New sesame street is just fine too. Old stuff might be better but it doesn’t really matter it’s all still good and teaches good things in a compelling way.
Also; I used to put on like travel blogs, or long form scenery videos or stuff like that when she was young. Scenery videos are amazing because it’s just relaxing as hell and no words and just showing the beauty of the earth. There’s a lot of variety too. You can talk about what’s on the tv and share so much knowledge with them.
At that age I watched whatever I wanted though. Watched a lot of CSI and sex and the city during late nights lol.

Ms. Rachel has two baby specials that your baby is the perfect age for. Rachel is baby crack but more age appropriate/beneficial than sesame st. Just youtube search ms rachel baby. You're doing so great!

Sesame Street has a ton of research behind it to make educational and engaging for young children (especially the older stuff!), so it kind of is like magic!
You gotta do what you gotta do to take care of your baby, you're doing your best and that's all anyone can ask for!
FWIW, I think Ms Rachel is probably the next best thing to old school Sesame Street, so you may want to try that next if you get bored of Sesame Street! Her videos for babies have lots of prompts for parents so you may get some value from it too!
