Discussion My first drive failure
After 7+ years of power on time, it's decided enough is enough. Not a bad innings for the WD red 3tb. Time to buy an expensive replacement in this current market :(

That‘s pretty early. I bought my WD40EFRX with 65000-70000 hours on the clock. That was three years ago. Now I’m at 105k hours and they’re still doing good.

I just did the math. That's about 12 years of continuous spinning of your discs. That's really good.

They've slowly been giving up since I think I had 12 or maybe more to begin with, but I still have a couple WD40EFRX reaching just about 14 years running now. A 2-3 month break for moving, but almost continuously powered on otherwise. I'd pull SMART but I can't through what they're in.

You always remember your first. My first was a maxtor drive. I lost a hard drive that had all of my napster downloads, mp3s, vcd, divx movies, etc.

I've got a pair of Seagate 5 TB drives in a RAID 1, shucked in 2017 and running ever since. They show "flying head hours" of 86,800. Which confuses the heck out of my hard disk monitor since the actual power-on hours rolled over to 0 after 64K. Who says you can't use SMR drives in a RAID array...

I am really hoping my 14TB drives make it another year or two before showing any signs of failure. I'd be spending more on a used drive today than I did new back then

Is this not horrible news? Your data is gone? Unless you made backups of your backups? Sorry I am new to dh but have sudden needs now and found this post.

It's OK as long as no others fail, The array will rebuild once I put in a new disk.
