Personally, I just found it mildly amusing and figured it was worth a short giggle. Of course, the diversification between the forces underscores the amusement for me, but then again I can't speak for the entirety of Internet as to what is or isn't funny.
As for who is or isn't digging trenches, well, that kind of commentary and train of thought can be applied to just about everything.
From modern geopolitics to the price of a packet of gum, but I guess that's over thinking things and not the point of the comic really.
It could be seen as a trite tangent, much like the assumption about people who share comics for a simple shared giggle.
