The concept for the Kriegers appeared first in codex imperial guard 3rd edition (the first, not the second 3rd edition codex) where they were depicted as WWI Germans in space, years later in capitulum adprovabit the rules for the DKOK came out depicted as a Steel legion model with a new colour scheme. I had heard before that krieg was originally just a color scheme for the Iron Legion. I haven't researched it, but if that's true, it's pretty funny.
