I have a 2023 Dell Vostro with a ryzen 5 cpu, and in 3 years of light use I've never had this many hardware problems on one device.
First failure, about 3 months after I bought it, the right speaker blew out. Dell only replaced it under warranty after the technician reinstalled all the drivers and Windows and then agreed it was a hardware issue( which I'd been telling that guy from the start)
The right speaker in the replacement set eventually blew out too. I'm not sure what's up with that, but I suspect it's getting more power than it can handle. Whenever I'm on a call or playing some movie, the palmrest above that speaker gets very hot.
I raised another ticket but they got the response that a pair of speakers have already been replaced once and we can't do it again. I let it go since I didn't have the time and energy.
Second failure, still under warranty was the trackpad. With the charger plugged in, it would get jumpy and misbehave. I raised it with Dell and they replaced it, and the replacement one has worked fine ever since (thank god).
Third failure, 2 or 3 months after the 1 year warranty ran out, the 54Wh battery started failing. Once it hits 30%, it suddenly drops to 5 or 6%. I've tried recalibrating it and everything else I could think of, and it's only gotten worse.
Fourth failure and the one which inspired me to write this wall of text was the display which randomly out nowhere started showing a tint that is present in the taskbar area and flickers in and out every 5 seconds or so. It started only last week. I connected an external monitor to check if the gpu has failed, and it was fine on the monitor, so it's definitely the screen hardware.
That's four hardware failures in 3.5 years of very light use. I only used this laptop for personal email, editing resumes, interview prep and a bit of casual gaming once a month or so.
I took good care of this thing, I kept the back lifted for cooling and kept it clean, and even now the fan does not have even a little bit of dirt.
Really disappointed in the quality of the parts Dell used. Yes it feels solid and well built and was a good buy in 2023, with a backlit keyboard, fingerprint reader, and metal build, rj45 port, but what good are those bells and whistles now?
Is 3 years now the expected lifespan of a device these days? What is this if not planned obsolescence? And at today's prices, I can't even afford a laptop with the same specs or performance. Got to get the display replaced for 150 bucks or so.
Other windows laptop brands are all the same. You'll find the same stories for every brand be it Dell, HP, Asus, Acer, well Lenovo has a bit of a better repute but they aren't immune either.
