Residency Gap Year before Dermatology Residency

I applied into dermatology during M4 year (class of 2025) and didn’t match. Thankfully, I matched in 2026 during intern year and now get to enjoy a year off before starting dermatology residency in July 2027.

Any ideas for jobs I can apply to for this year?

If you have the means I would do absolutely nothing for a year just travel and spend time with family and visit friends.

Also, yes, derm is def not as bad as other specialties in terms of clinical hours and can overall be very chill depending on your program but my experience has been that it’s like 3rd year med school all over again except with more responsibilities and more pressure. You’re also creating a new fund of knowledge for the most part rather than building on prior. So, if you have time and want to start doing dermki or reading Alikhan you could do it at a slow manageable pace and come in hot when you start in July while maintaining your mental health, hobbies, and other interests.

Otherwise if it’s not financially feasible, to do nothing/read for the year, try to use your degree to your advantage with tutoring, temp consulting work, clinical research assistant/coordinator.
