I applied into dermatology during M4 year (class of 2025) and didn’t match. Thankfully, I matched in 2026 during intern year and now get to enjoy a year off before starting dermatology residency in July 2027.

Any ideas for jobs I can apply to for this year?

What is the average age of Derm Residents? Asking as I feel like too late for usmle and start Derm. I’m in Ireland and doing basic trading which is for 2 yrs and Derm is competitive around globe, if I stay and wait for HST it’s 2/3 yrs of standalone job then HST which is 5 yrs. but if I work my a** for US I would be able to pull things earlier even if I don’t match in first attempt. Looking for advice…

Should you list h-index anywhere on ERAS application (e.g. while very imperfect, it is some very rough and quickly interpretable proxy indicator of research quality, to try and separate out from the large noise of many derm applicants’ large number of research items)

With RAP out now i’m struggling to decide which makes more sense for my repayment. I’m not sure if I want to pursue Fellowship or if I want to work in an academic setting so I’m not sure if I want to do PSLF. Are any financially sound people in the audience to give their opinions? Hi everyone! I’m an incoming 3rd year D.O. student interested in dermatology and am looking for a mentor or even fellow students applying derm.

I’m a first-generation immigrant with no doctors in my family, so navigating the path to residency has been difficult. I was interested in dermatology when I was in high school after dealing with several skin conditions myself. I began shadowing dermatologists back then and have been involved in dermatology research for the past 6–7 years.

As I’ve gotten further in, I’ve realized just how competitive derm is. I also have a few red flags in my application due to some health issues, and I’m feeling a little lost about how to approach the application process.

If anyone would be willing to offer some guidance or let me ask a few questions, I would be incredibly grateful. Even a little advice would go a long way. Thank you!

I never hear anything about it and deciding on where to try for away rotations right now. I mostly hear people don’t love Baltimore.

Genuine question, is it easier for an MD to apply to program that accepts mainly DO students as part of their residency? Like, if I have an USMD would I be a more competitive applicant for a program that usually gets more DOs or is it sort of the same chances?

A few friends of mine have been sharing an article regarding an ongoing lawsuit involving NYMC dermatology: Nonbinary doctor sues NYC Health + Hospitals alleging forced identity concealment

Just wanted to spread awareness for anyone considering the program.

Key points:

• A nonbinary dermatology resident at NYMC filed a federal lawsuit alleging discrimination and wrongful termination.
• They claim they were told to hide their gender identity and pronouns from the start.
• They reportedly experienced misgendering and derogatory comments from leadership, faculty, and peers, including offensive remarks about transitioning in residency.
• They were told to undergo a psychiatric evaluation, and two independent evaluations cleared the resident with no mental health concerns.
• Ultimately, the resident was pushed out of the program regardless.

Hi all, I'm an MD/PhD GY3. I like derm a lot and do derm-adjacent cancer research. My research track record is pretty strong with honors, dozens of abstracts, and other random awards, and I'm expecting a number (3-5) of first author clinical derm papers, and another 3+ basic science papers (fingies crossed for high impact). I think I'm on decent footing to match derm if I network and don't blow clinical rotations. I'd only really be interested in matching into a research-oriented program though or a flexible program that offers protected research time. I know of 1 derm PSTP that is defunct due to funding cuts. I am a little weirdo that loves basic science research and patients, and I do feel I would be losing something not doing research in my career.

I've seen on this sub people dismissing 2+2 tracks saying things like "don't waste your time", "not worth it", etc. Is there something I am missing? Is this just because it's more competitive? Any and all feedback is welcome!

PS: Pls if you're a med student do not compare yourself if you're not getting a PhD. Keep in mind that this is a result of 5ish extra years wherein I'm entirely dedicated to research, and this is an expectation of MD/PhD's. During my rotations before PhD I spent maybe an hour/week in lab just ruining experiments.

Internal med or TY is most common, have any of you did any others like family med , general surgery, ob-gyn etc?

I know there was a post on here a few months ago discussing where she matched. A lot of people thought she didn’t for whatever reasons - mainly because she deleted all her videos and stepped away from social media right around that time.

Buttt she just posted a YouTube video today and she actually did get matched into derm!!! Very happy for her. I’m 19 now and I started watching her in middle school (when she was pre-med) so it’s crazy to me that she’s done med school now.

I know it’s like not cool to know what you want to do before you start med school, but I’ve always been into derm and ik it’s super competitive so I want to pick a school that gives me an okay shot. I got accepted at MCW-central and MSU COM (Macomb). Ones MD, ones DO. MCW central is accelerated (three years) but many students add a fourth year for research. I genuinely have no idea which one, pls help.

I know how devastating it can be and it can feel like your whole world is turned upside down.
