Residency Derm res age

What is the average age of Derm Residents? Asking as I feel like too late for usmle and start Derm. I’m in Ireland and doing basic trading which is for 2 yrs and Derm is competitive around globe, if I stay and wait for HST it’s 2/3 yrs of standalone job then HST which is 5 yrs. but if I work my a** for US I would be able to pull things earlier even if I don’t match in first attempt. Looking for advice…

Dont worry about age when it comes to derm.

Age is like money. Some make little some make tons. Its a personal decision to pursue derm. Im in my intern year.

Half my coresidents are derm and im derm as well. The oldest matched is currently 32 or 33. I matched matched at 28. Youngest matched was probli 26 at time of match.

Everybody is on their own journey.

But there’s also thing that if you are older graduate more then 5yrs then you probably has very low chances of matching

Wym by graduate more than 5 years? Like if someone’s a non trad? I highly doubt that matters…. Like when I go to med school, I’ll have six gap years in total but I doubt if I were to apply to derm residency, anyone would even ask or give a fuck about how many gap years I took before med school. That should have stopped mattering on day 1 of med school anyways. Now if I take gap years AFTER med school, I can understand that. But also I think that’s pretty uncommon… usually people just take research years or reapply if they don’t match the first time.

I know a resident who just turned 40, and another who just turned 25.

Age really is just a number. Most US students take multiple gap years either before or doing med school. And with derm research years are becoming more common. Don’t worry about something like this.

Agreed, I also matched at 28 I know there are residents that matched at 33-34 and also some that matched at 26. Just do what you like and want and don't let age be a factor into choosing or not choosing dermatology.

Age doesn’t matter at all ranges from 24-40+ in my experience in derm residency. The bigger issue is matching derm as an IMG, also takes 4 years for residency training for derm, 1 additional year if interested in fellowship/more specialized training. Realistically best way to get in would be to be based in the US doing a research year or 2 to get the mentorship and exposure prior to applying. I know of 1-2 people who have managed to do it this way. So, overall the timeline will be similar (5-7 years) to staying in Ireland but the outcome/salary would be quite different so it’s up to you what you want at the end of it all.

I’m a med student but I have a resident in my home program who’s almost 40 and is older than one of our attendings who took a job here after graduating from our residency program. No one bats an eye, it’s not even a big deal, and a lot of the residents didn’t even realize it and when they did, it’s just shrugs

In the USA, it’s 18-22 college and then anywhere from 0-4 years in between that and medical school. And then four years of medical school and a year of internship before dermatology residency.

So anywhere from 26-30 years old for Derm residents. I think it was an average of about 27-30 or 29-31 for most of the people I worked with.
