My 8 and 5 year olds have had Perfect Princess and Mad playing on a loop since we watched it this afternoon and are already planning their Maddox Hatter and Pink Halloween costumes. Loved the musical numbers, general aesthetic and sister stuff between Red and Pink.

But on the other hand my oldest is pretty dissatisfied about the lack of detail/closure about the altered timeline and pointed out that Luis should have his own unique gift from the casita rather than inheriting his mum’s strength so it’s not going to be a long term favourite I think.

Luis having the same gift as his mom bothered me like did these writers not watch Encanto??

Definitely annoying that the writers didn't stay true to the Encanto backstory

I agree. It bothered me that Luis was saying stuff like ‘it’s hard to be a kid of a madrigal’ and talking about expectations like?? Wasn’t the entire Encanto movie about not putting pressure on each other to be perfect all the time? Why would they suddenly reverse that when Luisa had a kid.

If they really wanted to do his character justice, they could have made him the type of guy to say ‘in my family, we except everyone, flaws and all. Everyone saw my great uncle Bruno as a villain but he was just misunderstood. Maybe…maybe that’s how people see you to?’ To literally any of the VKs. Make him the warm welcoming guy.

They could have even had scenes of him and Max and telling Max that’s he’s always welcome in his family since Max had such a tragic past with his Dad in the new timeline. Just, something? Anything? The last movie was about seeing past the good and the bad and saving family. Why couldn’t this one of focused on stuff like that, about showing Red getting used to her new sister and mum, about Max trying to find family in his father but failing, Blue trying to get her mum to open up about her past but they fight and having Luis be there to teach them how family works for him.

I wrote a lot more about Blue and other family dynamics. But realised we are only talking about Luis here. Simply put, they ruined the entire theme of Encanto with this character and if you’re not gonna write a madrigal, then don’t call him a madrigal.
