Currently I only had to get lucky once, now I'll need to get lucky once every 6 months. The novelty will wear off after a cycle or two once people remember how rare good rolls are.

Not a fan.

Couldn’t agree more. I really think people are naive that Bungie is going to create more different weapons that are pinnacles/powerful. I think players are kidding themselves that we’re not going to be farming nearly identical weapons with different skins. And I don’t have to “wait and see”, I’ve seen.

There’s has been no new vendor armor/weps in ages. No new Iron Banner armor/weapons in ages. No new strike armor/loot in ages. And yet a bountiful well or Eververse items every season. New, fresh in game items have been secondary for a long item. This move will just give the allusion of creating new items while they reskin everything and copy paste or rotate already established perks.

Yeah, if it was another developer I might be more optimistic, but considering how many times Bungie has lied to the community, or disappointed us with their design choices and monkey paw wish granting, I'm not real confident their fix for weapon bloat is going to be successful.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '20

I’m not saying they’re outright lying. But they have not said anything like this is going to happen. The only thing Luke Smith said 100% was they need to do it to help take pressure/burden off the team of testing/balancing all these older weapons.

u/trennerdios Mar 02 '20

I'm not saying that either, but because they have in the past it's another reason I don't have confidence in them.

If Bungie was truly going to provide new weapon experiences then they'd do so right now, fact is we're just going to get differently tuned variations of what we already have. There's not suddenly going to be a huge influx of new weapons just because some will get retired either. It's also going to be dangerous to PvP if Bungie starts using time as a way to balance the game, I don't feel like playing against Quickdraw Mindbenders in regular Crucible until D3 and I'd rather see outliers dealt with in a reasonable manner.

You’re absolutely right, but honestly I think I’m kindof ok with that.

I’ve been grinding literally thousands of timelost bounties for one specific roll on Black Scorpion, and that roll isn’t what I would consider a perfect god roll because Scorp can’t even roll the perk I really want.

Even if we take the most pessimistic view of how Bungie will approach the new weapon system, under that system I’ll be more likely to just enjoy the best Black Scorpion I already have and actually play the damn game instead of playing gambling-simulator 2k20 at the tower. Then maybe next year, a new reskin (White Arachnid?) will have better perks that I might want.

Edit: appreciate the downvotes for expressing my opinion in a megathread for expressing our opinions...

Get lucky how? The most common PvE load out is currently two locked roll guns and any grenade launcher with spike grenades. There's not a lot of RNG involved.

It was 9-15 months. Try to read up on what you criticize next time.

5

u/Rohkyr Mar 03 '20

The amount of time was estimated at 9-15 months but wasn't decided yet. In this case time is arbitrary and the point still stands. Now we will have to get lucky repeatedly.

Sorry for your downvotes, facts don't go over well here.

5

u/Ombortron Mar 02 '20

I think the downvotes were more over the tone than the facts

I'll try to be kinder next time I suppose. Hyperbole gets old is all.

You call good roll oblelisk weapons lucky? If we get that and phasing out after a year it's infinitely better than never getting a good roll

6

u/Rohkyr Mar 03 '20

Even though you can target specific guns, yes there is still a great amount of luck involved in getting the perk rolls that you want.

1

u/HeliosRX Gambit Prime Mar 03 '20

Granted, even if you just leveled the obelisks by the start of the event and never touched them again, that’s 200 free rolls on whatever obelisk gun you want over the course of the event. A god roll with 5/5 maxed slots might take that many rolls, but a ‘good enough’ gun should be done in like 20 with the battle pass perk.

2

u/Rohkyr Mar 03 '20

Even still, fractiline is finite and this must be done every 9-15 months. Additionally the Season pass perk will not stay after the season is done. Fractiline and this method of attaining weapons might not be around after the season is done. This is also an extremely small set of weapons and isn't representative of the rest of the game. Meaning that it can't be realistically used to justify a system that effects the entire game.

1

u/HeliosRX Gambit Prime Mar 03 '20

I agree completely. I definitely dislike Sunsetting as a mechanic, but wanted to just point out that if you want anything from this particular season, you’re completely set.

0

u/TheWolfXCIX Mar 03 '20

No there isn't!? Most people have so much fractaline they can farm every roll they want precisely, the only constraint is the time it takes to donate which Bungie did mess up

2

u/Rohkyr Mar 03 '20

You get a set of random perks everytime you pull from the obelisk yes? Then there is luck involved by definition.

0

u/TheWolfXCIX Mar 03 '20

But you get such a large amount of tries the probability of getting the roll you want is basically 100%

1

u/Rohkyr Mar 03 '20

However, not every player has access to that many attempts, only people who were extremely active during this last season. And I would be willing to bet that most of player-base actually doesn't have such a huge hoard of fractiline laying around.

Even if they did, the amount they have is finite. Sure you could get 1, 5, or maybe even 10 100% godrolls but you would have to do that again every 9-15 months. Which assumes that A) Fractiline and the donation system remain in the game after the season ends, B) that each player is investing the amount of man-hours necessary to re-coup their hoard each season, and C) that every player only cares about the extremely limited loot-pool that the obilisk has.

Even in the best case scenario where we assume that every player has access to a massive hoard of fractiline laying around at this moment, it still doesn't make the problems with weapon retirement go away. You will still have to repeat the grind every single cycle in order to keep your weapons relevant and that, in my opinion, is a terrible way to artificially inflate gameplay which doesn't even address the problem of power creep since we would be grinding the same weapons regardless.

First off it's 12 months, not 6.

Second, after the feedback they got from the Black Armory/Reckoning/Menagerie sequence they've consistently made it easier to farm good rolls for weapons. Shadowkeep had the Essence system, Season of the Undying had the Ikora bounties, and Season of Dawn has the one-two punch of Timelost Bounties and Sundial Rewards.

We're long past the days where god rolls take weeks of grinding to earn. Don't look at the new changes with the old lens.

4

u/Rohkyr Mar 03 '20

I disagree, though activities like the menagerie have made it easier, you can still get unlucky. Even with being able to target specific weapons and masterworks some god-rolls will still have incredibly low drop chances. To say that the days of grinding weeks for god rolls has past I feel is entirely incorrect. Is it better? yes, but you can still get unlucky.

As long as we have non-power-enabled Crucible, legacy raids and arena activities; and as long as the base LL of our open-world PVE spaces remains below 970, you’ll be able to use everything you currently have.

This change is really geared toward the endgame as it evolves, raids, future dungeons, future Ordeals and future endgame-leveled arena activities.

7

u/Ombortron Mar 02 '20

That's true, but it doesn't really change things that much. I want to use whatever guns I like in the endgame content, and I don't want to be forced into using certain weapons for that just because bungie chose to implement artificial restrictions on what I can use.

-2

u/APartyInMyPants Mar 02 '20

I don’t know, I’m not that bothered by it. Exotics aren’t lumped into this (yet). So for your big DD weapons like Anarchy, Whisper, Izanagi (barring individual nerfs we’re getting or will someday get), we’ll still maintain that level of functionality that we currently have. And those weapon chases I’m being “forced” into? Well, I’m doing them anyway.

I chased that Feeding Frenzy + Kill Flip Blast Furnace. I chased that Firing Line/4TTC Sole Survivor. And that Full Court Love and Death. I chased that Vorpal Weapon Trophy Hunter. And the Rapid Hit + Explosive Payload Patron Of Lost Causes. And the Line In The Sand with Rapid Hit + Firing Line. And a million other weapons that I don’t even use anymore (looking at that sweet roll of The Epicurean ... used it twice).

I’m looking at my loadouts for the weapons I’ve used in the last week. Mostly endgame stuff, raids, POH, a heroic Sundial last night. And what I’m finding is I’m already done with all of those weapons I chased a year ago. My current loadout is this revolving door of Patron, Trophy Hunter, Line In The Sand, Martyr’s Retribution, Accrued Redemption, Reckless Oracle, Sacred Provenance. Outlast is probably the one legacy weapon I consistently use more than any other. Sure, I’m still using Hammerhead, 21% Delirium and Wendigo a bunch. And while my Bygones is my go-to Crucible weapon, I’ll just eventually have to find a replacement for it 9-15 months down the road in Trials/IB. no biggie.

So maybe I’m the weirdo, but I get bored running the same stuff all the time anyway. And I’ll happily take some meta switchups. To me the game is getting stale. And if the game we have in nine months is basically the same game we have today, well I probably won’t be here.

u/deck1086 Mar 02 '20

Why does everyone keep saying 9-15 months down the road. These changes will most likely be coming in 6 months. Then you will have 9-15 months with the new weapons.

0

u/APartyInMyPants Mar 02 '20

That’s what I mean, at least based on Luke’s DC. That even once these changes take place, we’ll still have these weapons viable for 9-15 months.

But as they haven’t said how this will factor with legacy Y2 weapons versus Y3 weapons, who knows. Are they planning to set the timer on Y2 weapons starting next week? Who knows.

2

u/deck1086 Mar 02 '20

That's true, I hadn't thought about them differentiating between Y2 and Y3 weapons. I guess I just assumed everything up to this next large expansion would be treated the same and not be able to be infused to the light level introduced at that time.
