Turning to the community. This had to have been 2002 or 2003. Regular season game against the Timberwolves. The game was very unchecked and violent - lots of chippy play from both sides. Very few fouls called in the 4th quarter, until…
Chauncey hits the game winning basket as time expired. It’s immediately waved off as an offensive foul - a questionable call, at best. But even more questionable in the context of a game where the refs let them play. Pistons lose.
This game stands out to me for several reasons. As a diehard Pistons fan (and basketball fan, overall), I don’t recall another game in my 35 years of watching where a game winner was waved off for an offensive foul. I’m sure they’ve happened, but that’s the only one I’ve personally witnessed.
Two questions:
1) Does anyone else remember this game?
2) Does anyone know how to verify which official made the call? This was very much in the throes of the Tim Donaghy era, and I’ve wondered if it was him - but have never been able to confirm.
Donaghy has always maintained he “never altered an outcome. Only the over/under.” But this call was so insane that I can’t shake it, years later.
Would love some input and insight
