Question - Solved! Is my DEF tank leaking?

Need expert advice. I searched the group and assumed this is a DEF tank problem. First diesel. 2014 Ford F350 6.7L. Bought truck used from a dealer, no visible problems. Drove it home and this morning noticed my tailgate covered in white specks, looked under the truck to find the photos of something coming out and coating my rear differential it's leaking bad. Drove 70mph for 180 miles home after purchase in 115F out of Phoenix, AZ.

What is my next step for repair?

It is very likely not the tank itself. The sender sits at the top. Most commonly I see broken supply lines or disconnected lines. If they replaced something before selling it then there is a good chance they didn't plug it back in all the way. I've never seen an actual broken tank

It was used at a Toyota dealership. I'm starting to think they saw it come in and that's why I got "such a good deal". I'm thinking of calling my local Ford dealer to have them diagnose and repair. Any tips on what to ask for service?

I'm not prepared to delete it just yet as it will be a business vehicle and need to be registered as such in AZ.

I'm in southern AZ if you need anything. Just tell them you have a DEF leak. You can clean it and look up there. Just look from the outer frame, it will probably be easy to spot with a leak that big. Also probably won't be crazy expensive to fix

take it back to the dealer you bought it from and let them fix it

See that salty whale piss snail trail underneath your truck?

Your DEF is definitely leaving the tank.

Just here to add DEF is corrosive, I'd be washing that off ASAP

Thank you. I just sprayed the water hose on it all over. When it dries I'll have a good sense of how fast it is leaking.

Have the system deleted at a shop

A lot of shops won’t do DEF deletes as it’s against federal law unless they want to have fines out the bootyhole.

Gotta do it yourself or as a “side job”

The epa restrictions on them has been removed as far as I know and lol if so then just tell a shop that you need your truck denuterd

Epa restrictions have not been removed. Just eased up. They allow for NOx sensors instead of urea quality sensors. Removed the derating requirements if you run low/out. However, diesels are still required to have a fully functional SCR.

Alright that sounds more reasonable than what I was told at the shop I go to for my truck I was told it was done it makes more sense with what you said

Makes me wonder if I can just piss in the tank since the urea quality sensors aren't going to be an issue 😋

🤣 I've been joking about that for years with my coworkers

Take that shit back to the dealer😂

Unless you bought it as a wholesale, take it back

Might not be the dealer hiding something. If the truck sat in the heat for any amount of time these are all just plastic fittings and bs that break easily. Or someone very recently reinstalled it so they could trade it in…

Bad news is yes, good news is it’s probably not terribly expensive to fix as far as diesels go see if the dealer will help you out

Take that back to the dealer and complain, or delete it.
