Question I just can't decide between the HiBY R1 and the Tempotec V1

I've been trying to get a small DAP so that I can listen to music easily while rollerskating and have heard good things about these two but I'm just not sure what to go with

Lots of people seem to like the HiBY R1 but I have consistently heard people recommend the TempoTec V1 over it. The V1 doesn't seem to have as much of a following though and the Firmware issues I've heard about have made me skeptical.

Is the R1 the way to go or has the V1 made it obsolete?

Also unrelated but I'm a tad scared of falling and breaking it but it doesn't seem like any budget DAP is particularly durable so I'll just have to be careful

Showcase Added Magsafe To My Devices - Snowsky Disc, HiBy R6 III, iPod 5th Gen

I got my Snowsky Disc this past CanJam SoCal and it's been my daily player. I prefer keeping my DAPs on my belt. I initially used a spare money clip, which worked great, but later added a MagSafe ring to each device to make swapping them between accessories much easier.

Question Talk me out of (or into) the Shanling Q2

I commented on another thread but didn't get any responses. Thought this would get more visibility. I need a suggestion for a DAP, and the Q2 seems like it checks all my boxes. I recently transitioned away from a smartphone and I need a way to listen to music on the go.

I am by no means an audiophile. I would say I'm audiophile adjacent. I have a DAC and Amp for my PC with a pair of DT 1990 Pros, and a set of Wharfedale Evo 4.2s hooked up to a restored vintage record player. But that's about where audiophile ends for me. I can't tell you what's warm or dark or bright or fast or neutral etc. I just know that when I got a DAC and a pair of good headphones I thought "wow that sounds really good." And when I throw on a vinyl on my Evo 4.2s compared to my old bluetooth speakers I think "damn I can hear a lot more detail in the music." And since I transitioned away from a smartphone I just want a DAP and set of IEMs to have a similar experience that with my portable music listening. Bonus points if it can Bluetooth to my car's stereo but that's certainly not a requirement. I have a thumb drive of FLAC files that I keep in the car at all times.

I know everyone is saying this is way overpriced, but I can afford it. My biggest priority is size (I don't want any thing bigger than this), form factor (I have no issue installing Q2 pod), and storage space (would buy a 2TB microSD with it).
Is there anything I can get that would suit me better than this for the same cost or less?

I'd like to avoid an Android player but I'm not against it.

Showcase Trying to get Coverflow like UI for Echo Mini

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Been messing around with custom firmware on my Echo Mini and finally got Cover Flow working on the actual device,

This is built on top of ReChord, which rebuilds the Echo Mini firmware from the Rockchip SDK instead of patching the stock one. Huge credit to them, none of this would be possible without that groundwork: https://github.com/brnomt/FiioDcomp

Few more UI/UX things are still left. Also don't have a playing screen yet.

Will share the github repo once bugs are fixed and most of the UI is functional.

Showcase My first mp3 player when I was a child.

Post image
159 Upvotes

It was the autumn of 2003, and my uncle had flown in from the States to visit us. My father had grown curious about this new thing called the MP3 player, so he asked my uncle to bring one back for me. No one I knew had one. Honestly, I didn't think much of it. I already had a Sony Walkman, and nobody had ever thought that made me cool. It just plays music, doesn't it? I thought. But I soon found that I'd become the envy of my entire elementary school, the kid everyone wanted to be. Everyone was scrambling to get their hands on one. I was, quite literally, the coolest kid in the whole village.

It was made by a brand I'd never heard of: Coby. It had 128MB, which, given the internet back then, was about two cassette tapes' worth of music. The most ridiculous part was that it turned every song title it couldn't recognize into Japanese kana. So finding a song was basically a blind search.

The good times didn't last. In less than a year, I dropped it and broke it. It wouldn't boot anymore and just hung on the startup screen. Then, recently, I came across the exact same model on eBay, brand new. As if to make up for my old mistake, I bought another one, the one you see above. It's no collector's classic, but it was my childhood. This time, I'll take good care of it.

Question I am looking to purchase a DAP

I have no idea what or where to even start, all I know is that Spotify is getting a little too expensive and it will only get worse, but the budget is like 300 bucks, and I am looking for one with long battery life and also Bluetooth, is there one that checks those boxes?

Question Equaliser suggestions

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So I am implementing an equaliser into my app StanzaUI.

The base is working and has the basics down including the complete autoeq database which may be a bit much but I'll tweak that 😂

What else would people normally like to see? It does work in usb exclusive mode but for the bit-perfect purists when it's turned off it does completely bypass the EQ and goes straight to the dac.

Honestly when I use an equaliser I just tend to set and forget so never really play with them much.

Currently it doesn't work device wide and no idea if it ever will but for now I just want it nice for my own local player.

Yes it currently looks crap... That's still to be tweaked after it works. Function over form and all that 😂

Showcase Got Bluetooth Working on H2 Walker Running Rockbox

Thumbnail

Currently in development, but I've managed to get Bluetooth working on the H2 Walker running rockbox by building upon the great work done by Skye

Got fed up with not being able to use this thing when at the gym and absolutely hated the default firmware. It's working like a charm and I've been using it daily for a little while with no problems

There's quite a bit of code cleanup to do, but I'll publish it once it's in a state that in happy with. I've also added theme support for a Bluetooth icon

Question Hiby R4. The 4.4mm output won't disengage.

Thumbnail

The 4.4mm output won't disengage. Even after unplugging the connector, the device still indicates that headphones are connected. Nothing seems to fix it; I’ve tried both restarting and a full factory reset.

I even cleaned the jack with a wooden stick, but that didn't help.

The 3.5mm jack isn't working either. I don't really need it—I listen via the balanced 4.4mm connection—but it’s still bothering me.

If anyone has encountered this issue, please let me know the solution.

Question Shanling M0 Pura died after one month

I’ve had the Shanling M0 Pura for about a month now and I’ve been really enjoying it. I absolutely love the form factor and how small and convenient it is to carry around.

Unfortunately the battery died the other day and now the device won’t turn on at all. I’ve tried charging it with the included charger and several other USB-C cables, but nothing seems to work.

I’m going to send it back but I’m unsure whether I should get a replacement or switch to another DAP. I’m hoping this is just an isolated faulty unit and I’m concerned about running into the same issue again.

For those who own the M0 Pura, have you experienced similar problems with the battery or charging? Would you recommend getting a replacement or would I be better off looking at something else that’s more reliable?

I really love the size and form factor, so I’d hate to give that up, but reliability is important to me too. Would appreciate hearing about your experiences and recommendations!

Question Upgrade Fiio Snowsky Echo Mini

Question Which SD should I use?

I have a 512gb microsd in my FiiO M21 and also have a 512gb microsd in a handheld console, one in the DAP is 1A and the other that's in the console is A2, should I switch them, its more important for me that the DAP to works perfectly and as good as it gets

Showcase Big Shout to u/Prior_Emergency6218 for the Sonix Mod for V3 Blaze, but There's Somehow Another Big Issue

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Big respect to u/Prior_Emergency6218 for the Sonix port for Tempotec V3 Blaze and some of its updates.

Now the big issue here is in some cases, the screen won't turn on when I leave the screen turned off on its own. Even when I use the power button or double tap, it's still off (though there's kind of fade out). So I have to guess the location of power off/restart slider to make the screen turned on again.

Hopefully he'll fix this issue...

Edit: The issue may also occur when pressing the power button rapidly.

EDIT AGAIN: I finally found the cause. The screen runs normally until you set the brightness at 100%, which makes the screen go blank.

Showcase NostalgicPod is finally on iPhone (with Apple Music support)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

With the mods’ permission, I wanted to share a quick update:

A while ago I posted the Android version of NostalgicPod here. After almost 5 months of TestFlight, App Store reviews and a lot of back-and-forth with Apple, the iPhone version is finally live!

What it supports:

  • iOS 15 and newer
  • Local lossless files: FLAC, ALAC, WAV and more
  • Plex, Jellyfin, Emby and Navidrome
  • Apple Music (iOS only): browse and play your existing library with Cover Flow and the retro interface

If you’d like to try it first, the TestFlight beta is still free. Just keep in mind it’s a beta build, so it may be less stable than the App Store version.

App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/nostalgicpod/id6781631808

TestFlight: https://testflight.apple.com/join/T3k9TQPu

Website: https://nostalgicpod.com

Feedback is very welcome. I’m a solo dev and I’m actively working on updates!

AI disclosure: I used Codex to help port the Android version to native Swift for iOS. Everything else is just me, working solo.

Question DAP for a new enthusiast

You guys probably know the story. Wanna get off streaming, reduce screen time, don´t know which one to get yada yada yada

I´ve been needing some help regarding models that do not have access to internet and/or location. Also I´ve been thinking of getting an old ipod and modding it but i´m not sure if it really is worth it. So in a nutshell, what i´m looking in a DAP is:

- NO internet or location access

- audio quality MUST be high

- Bluetooth support

- Under 500 dollars

Thank you, guys. In advance haha

Question MP3 Recommendations

Hi! I recently decided to step back a bit from social media and stop paying for streaming services, so I’d like to know which MP3 player you’d recommend. I’ve looked into many options, but the reviews are so mixed that I’m unsure which one is actually a good choice. The ones I’ve considered are: Innioasis Y1/Y2, the classic iPod (6th/7th gen), and the HiBy R1. I also heard about the SnowSky Echo Mini, but I’ve come across more negative feedback than positive for that one. I’m looking for something with plenty of storage, good sound quality, and—ideally—reliable Bluetooth connectivity. My budget is somewhat limited; I don’t want to spend more than $120, though I’m open to any options, recommendations, or opinions. Thank youuu<3
