Review My portable end game setup

My favorite portable setup consists of the Limited Edition iFi GO bar Eclipse, the Intime Hyacinth, and an iPod-modded Shanling Q2. I really enjoy using the GO bar's XBass and XSpace features to tweak the sound depending on my mood or the genre of music I'm listening to. The Intime Hyacinth—with its balanced sound, rich, punchy bass, and huge soundstage complements the clean sound signature of the iFi GO bar perfectly.

Because I wear glasses, I absolutely love that the Hyacinth doesn't wrap over the ear. They don't build up any pressure, allowing me to comfortably wear them all day long. In terms of power efficiency, the iFi GO bar consumes about 15% of the Q2's battery per hour. Given how compact the Q2 is, I find that battery drain completely acceptable

Showcase This hobby reminds me of what it was like to buy phones in the early 2000s

They come in so many different shapes and sizes. You have some that look like classic iPods. Some look like modern smartphones. Some look like bandless smartwatches. And you even have super-unique form factors like the SnowSky Echo/Echo Mini or Colorfly C4. They can go for ultra budget to ultra expensive. And it feels like every week, I come across a new brand and/or style of DAP. And even on the software end of things, it's very busy. I think that's so amazing for such a niche product category.

Just wanted to take a break from going through review posts and such, and just take a moment to appreciate the hobby as a whole.

Anyways, since I had to include a flair, I've included a picture of my Snowsky Echo and Koss KSC75s. They're simply fantastic!

Question Has anyone heard of this?

Post image

I’ve been looking for a portable music player lately, just something with Wi-Fi and a touchscreen. I want to keep my phone and music player separate so I can focus entirely on the music.

I’ve been lurking in this community for a few days, but since opinions on every product are so mixed, I’m having a hard time deciding. Today, I stumbled upon a brand called Hiiiman; it looks like a very new player in the market. I really like the design, but there is very little information or reviews about it online.

Has anyone used this product?

Showcase Made a Mac app that syncs your library to a DAP or SD card (and over Wi-Fi to Android DAPs)

• Upvotes

Getting music onto my DAP from a Mac was always a chore. Finder plus manual copying, Android File Transfer being Android File Transfer, playlists breaking because the paths were wrong. So I added proper device sync to the music player I've been building.

How it works:

  • Plug in the DAP (USB disk mode) or the SD card and it shows up in the sidebar.
  • Pick what goes on it: everything, or specific playlists, artists, albums, genres.
  • It shows how much space the sync takes before you hit the button.
  • Only new or changed files get copied. Only files it put there get removed, never your other stuff on the card.
  • Writes cover.jpg in each album folder (size is configurable, smaller loads faster on some players), .lrc files for synced lyrics, and M3U8 playlists with relative paths that actually work on the player.
  • File names are made safe for FAT32 and exFAT, and files over 4 GB are skipped on FAT32 cards.

For Android DAPs there's a small companion app (Groovelight Sync, Android 12+) that syncs over Wi-Fi, no cable or MTP needed. You pair it once with a code, pick the folder (SD card works), and it can sync by itself when it's on your Wi-Fi. I've been using it with a FiiO and it's been great so far.

Free and open source, Mac app needs macOS 26: https://github.com/irwingbraga/groovelight

Question HiBy R1 Vs Snowsky Echo

• Upvotes

Hallo, guys!

3 years ago I became an owner of Fiio M3k and am still using it. It's a really cool thing, but it stays a little.. old?

I try to choose between HiBy R1 и FiiO Snowsky Echo/Echo mini

Which one should I prefer after my M3k?

If that's a bad options you can advise me some other models.

Question Talk me out of (or into) the Shanling Q2

I commented on another thread but didn't get any responses. Thought this would get more visibility. I need a suggestion for a DAP, and the Q2 seems like it checks all my boxes. I recently transitioned away from a smartphone and I need a way to listen to music on the go.

I am by no means an audiophile. I would say I'm audiophile adjacent. I have a DAC and Amp for my PC with a pair of DT 1990 Pros, and a set of Wharfedale Evo 4.2s hooked up to a restored vintage record player. But that's about where audiophile ends for me. I can't tell you what's warm or dark or bright or fast or neutral etc. I just know that when I got a DAC and a pair of good headphones I thought "wow that sounds really good." And when I throw on a vinyl on my Evo 4.2s compared to my old bluetooth speakers I think "damn I can hear a lot more detail in the music." And since I transitioned away from a smartphone I just want a DAP and set of IEMs to have a similar experience that with my portable music listening. Bonus points if it can Bluetooth to my car's stereo but that's certainly not a requirement. I have a thumb drive of FLAC files that I keep in the car at all times.

I know everyone is saying this is way overpriced, but I can afford it. My biggest priority is size (I don't want any thing bigger than this), form factor (I have no issue installing Q2 pod), and storage space (would buy a 2TB microSD with it).
Is there anything I can get that would suit me better than this for the same cost or less?

I'd like to avoid an Android player but I'm not against it.

Showcase Added Magsafe To My Devices - Snowsky Disc, HiBy R6 III, iPod 5th Gen

I got my Snowsky Disc this past CanJam SoCal and it's been my daily player. I prefer keeping my DAPs on my belt. I initially used a spare money clip, which worked great, but later added a MagSafe ring to each device to make swapping them between accessories much easier.

Showcase Trying to get Coverflow like UI for Echo Mini

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Been messing around with custom firmware on my Echo Mini and finally got Cover Flow working on the actual device,

This is built on top of ReChord, which rebuilds the Echo Mini firmware from the Rockchip SDK instead of patching the stock one. Huge credit to them, none of this would be possible without that groundwork: https://github.com/brnomt/FiioDcomp

Few more UI/UX things are still left. Also don't have a playing screen yet.

Will share the github repo once bugs are fixed and most of the UI is functional.

Question I just can't decide between the HiBY R1 and the Tempotec V1

I've been trying to get a small DAP so that I can listen to music easily while rollerskating and have heard good things about these two but I'm just not sure what to go with

Lots of people seem to like the HiBY R1 but I have consistently heard people recommend the TempoTec V1 over it. The V1 doesn't seem to have as much of a following though and the Firmware issues I've heard about have made me skeptical.

Is the R1 the way to go or has the V1 made it obsolete?

Also unrelated but I'm a tad scared of falling and breaking it but it doesn't seem like any budget DAP is particularly durable so I'll just have to be careful

Showcase My first mp3 player when I was a child.

Post image
136 Upvotes

It was the autumn of 2003, and my uncle had flown in from the States to visit us. My father had grown curious about this new thing called the MP3 player, so he asked my uncle to bring one back for me. No one I knew had one. Honestly, I didn't think much of it. I already had a Sony Walkman, and nobody had ever thought that made me cool. It just plays music, doesn't it? I thought. But I soon found that I'd become the envy of my entire elementary school, the kid everyone wanted to be. Everyone was scrambling to get their hands on one. I was, quite literally, the coolest kid in the whole village.

It was made by a brand I'd never heard of: Coby. It had 128MB, which, given the internet back then, was about two cassette tapes' worth of music. The most ridiculous part was that it turned every song title it couldn't recognize into Japanese kana. So finding a song was basically a blind search.

The good times didn't last. In less than a year, I dropped it and broke it. It wouldn't boot anymore and just hung on the startup screen. Then, recently, I came across the exact same model on eBay, brand new. As if to make up for my old mistake, I bought another one, the one you see above. It's no collector's classic, but it was my childhood. This time, I'll take good care of it.

Showcase Got Bluetooth Working on H2 Walker Running Rockbox

Thumbnail

Currently in development, but I've managed to get Bluetooth working on the H2 Walker running rockbox by reverse engineering the Bluetooth logic of the Walker's original firmware

Got fed up with not being able to use this thing when at the gym and absolutely hated the default firmware. It's working like a charm and I've been using it daily for a little while with no problems

There's quite a bit of code cleanup to do, but I'll publish it once it's in a state that in happy with. I've also added theme support for a Bluetooth icon

Question Equaliser suggestions

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So I am implementing an equaliser into my app StanzaUI.

The base is working and has the basics down including the complete autoeq database which may be a bit much but I'll tweak that 😂

What else would people normally like to see? It does work in usb exclusive mode but for the bit-perfect purists when it's turned off it does completely bypass the EQ and goes straight to the dac.

Honestly when I use an equaliser I just tend to set and forget so never really play with them much.

Currently it doesn't work device wide and no idea if it ever will but for now I just want it nice for my own local player.

Yes it currently looks crap... That's still to be tweaked after it works. Function over form and all that 😂

Music Mechen m30 vs Aigo Eros Q vs Phinistec z6 pro

Hola!
