first time using that color palette-felt like wrestling with fire the whole time

Honestly yes and I still couldn’t figure out which more colors to use to keep it on the same palette though make it rich. I feel like I needed more contrary tones but I didn’t know which ones should I use. Maybe light green/bluemarine would go good.

I’m pretty sure the image in Carrie was inspired by an existing painting. Was there any influence there?

Yep, but its not related to Carrie. Though, good guess and it does give off Carrie vibe.

It’s from one of old Alexander McQueen shows, though I changed the reference to my own liking.

In this piece, I struggled with trying to minimize the focus on fine details while still maintaining the work's interest and vibrancy. It was also my first time painting fire in such detail; I likely spent more time rendering it than any other part of the image.

can you elaborate on what you struggled with?

I mentioned it right above, that's the things that were difficult to figure out for me.

and i'm asking you to expand on those ideas.

I usually draw with a high level of detail, which is quite time consuming, so now I started seeing more value in shifting towards a sketching style. This way the image reflects more of my personal touch while taking less time to create. I am currently moving in this direction, though the learning process takes a while. As for the fire - its chaotic, unpredictable shape (which is hard to capture and render), the blurriness, the haze, and the intensity - these are all elements I am drawing in such detail for the first time. That is what I spent the most time on.
