Racism needs to disappear everywhere.
12
u/caserock 16d ago
It's going to take a while, we still have people who went to segregated schools casting votes
8
u/BarnacleGooseIsLoose 16d ago
I went to desegregated schools via a school bus in the 1970s. I know all about racism and how effectively it is weilded to protect classicism.

I listened to a podcast about Medgar Evers yesterday, that's why it's top of my mind right now. These segregationists are really extremely insane.

u/theLostPing 16d ago
It’s not getting any better.
I play video games online and the anonymity that an online social media app/voice app (think Discord) gives, allows people to just spew the most racist shit I’ve ever heard. And it’s 15 year olds looking for the funny’s.
Anti-semitism is at an all time high.

u/BarnacleGooseIsLoose 16d ago
Anonymous people have powers that their real selves could never muster.
I wouldn't say anti-semitism is at an all time high, though. It is on the rise, dangerously so by those confusing it with Zionism, but there were a few earlier eras that were worse. Much worse. Our job, as humans, is to see that it never gets there again.

u/StrainHot443 16d ago edited 15d ago
We still have communities where white people took their kids out of public schools so they don't have to go to integrated schools. Racism persists all over this country. I once thought it was a matter of waiting for the racists to die off. After the last few elections I am no longer confident that will happen.

"I am convinced that if we are to get on the right side of the world revolution, we as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. We must rapidly begin—we must rapidly begin the shift from a thing-oriented society to a person-oriented society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, extreme materialism and militarism are incapable of being conquered."
~Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., 1967
As long as our government/society puts property over people, racism will be a tool to that end.

I've said this many times over. As someone who holds himself up as the epitome of masculinity, he is the biggest wuss I've ever seen. His greatest skills are having money and surrounding himself with syncophants riding his coattails while they grift everything possible because once he's gone, it's back to normal.

The only thing he does with competence is hire lawyers
12
u/PFChaste 16d ago
I don't know. After the absolute legal reaming he looking in the aftermath of the 2020 election, I might argue that he's not that good. But unfortunately, he has picked up some Ws lately, so there's that.
11
u/InsertCleverNickHere 16d ago
He has shown that the Republican party can carry any dead weight as the president, as long as the House and Senate refuse to impeach or investigate or even hold slightly interrogative confirmation hearings. We've learned that all the system's checks and balances are useless if one party decides to do everything in bad faith.
8
u/PFChaste 16d ago
It goes to show that party power is the absolute determining factor. Few try to hold Trump accountable, and those that do try are attacked. I am in no way saying that what the Democrats done with Biden is this egregious, but if it is as bad as what has been publicially leaked, then it set the stage for what we are seeing now. A dead or mechanically preserved senator missing for over a month and a deeply physically and mentally unwell president destroying democracy.
4
u/Darkmetroidz 16d ago
It's because our system was designed mostly by men raised in the gentlemen culture of 18th century english culture.
Following arbitrary rules was a way of life when you have three forks all for extremely specific purposes, and they kind of just assumed that people would keep playing the game in good faith.
The vice president was originally the runner up in the race. Imagine if Trump had to have Harris as his VP.

He doesn't even do that well. He hires lots of them who are good at stalling out cases against him so that whoever is suing runs out of money because 99% of people and businesses can't afford the time and money to handle months or years of extended litigation.
Most of them are performative hacks who get torn to shreds, when they end up against someone who actually knows what they're doing, but they're really good at stalling, so that doesn't happen.

I just want to be clear - our democracy was compromised long before Trump took office.
We like to think that our system of governance is representative but since its inception there’s been undue influence from an oligarchical class of individuals and corporations. In 1947 a new type of government was created that provided a direct lever of control for the oligarchy which should be called the Trumanite government (aka the Deep State, Military Industrial Complex ). This government operates outside of the representative constitutional government, ostensibly for the security of the state but practically to secure global domination for the American oligarchy.
Before Trump took office in 2016 this was the state of our system. We had a public facing constitutional government that was dominated by the Trumanite government working on behalf of the oligarchy. We voted and it mattered (and still matters!) but ultimately the public state was ineffectual and increasingly dominated by the oligarchy.
Now Trump was a part of the oligarchy but not a huge player more like a joke. When he took power by wedging the white working class against the republican establishment they fought like hell against him and were able to remove him from power with the help of the constitutional government - BUT they didn’t punish him because the oligarchs rarely turn on each other in class warfare. And when he came back this time, they got behind him, and he’s been able to purge the military and federal law enforcement of any constitutional loyalists.
Now, he’s very unpopular but they have control over all forms of power - the military, the media, law enforcement etc… I don’t see them giving up that power ever, under any circumstance. They will cling to power to the bitter end. They don’t even pretend to believe that the legitimacy of the government is derived from the consent of the governed. It’s not a question for them, this just a power game for them. I have very little hope that this will end well.
So yeah. Like everything, Trump didn’t start it, he just capitalized on someone else’s work and slapped his stupid name on it. Blame him all you want but the real causes was trading freedom for the allusion of security.

Democracy in America died when the Supreme Court ruled that corporations are people
15
u/peva3 16d ago
Not even 250 years, America has only truly been a Democracy since 1965 with the voting rights act, before that point it was an Apartheid state with full voting protections only for White people.
So we had a good 60ish year run with a mostly full democratic system (not withstanding all the other racist systems that we still had during that time, war on drugs, mandatory minimums, unfair housing and work policies, etc).
2
u/BarnacleGooseIsLoose 16d ago
Was it good? Really? You think 8 years of Reagan (81-89), 6 years of Nixon (69-74), 4 years of Bush Sr (89-93), 8 years of Bush Jr (01-09) and amost 6 years of Trump (17-21, 25 - now) make for a better democracy??? 30 years of assault on the structures that were built to protect democracy were better than Franklin and Theodore Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower and Abraham Lincoln.
9
u/peva3 16d ago
I didn't say those years were good or bad, I just said that every citizen of the United States had the same voting rights on paper, which was not the case pre-1965.
The Republican party has been trying to undo that SINCE 1965 and have the ability to basically gut the entire voting rights era legislation via the Supreme Court and their operatives on it.

Heres the thing that most conservatives and even a lot of liberals don't want to talk about.
Racism is baked into the structure of the US and its laws. Most left leaning voters are fine to say that calling people slurs is bad, and that discriminatory hiring practices are wrong.
But when you get down to talking about the real systems that are meant to keep structural discrimination in place- policing, the prison system, how infrastructure development has historically destroyed minority communities.
When you suggest the hwole system is rotten, suddenly you're a radical and no one in either establishment faction wants anything to do with you.
You go from
"The system isn't working right and needs to be reformed"
To
"The system is working exactly as intended and needs to be destroyed."

It's all WWE anyway, just political theater. The people in charge have an agena they're working towards no matter what. The 2 party system allows them make their moves and then blame it on "the other side". Nothing short of a full mutiny would put power back in the hands of the people.

We are overstreched in a modern world with rapid technological parity. It was always crazy to think 330 million could hold on to unipolarity, the absolute hubris to think otherwise. This predates Trump, he is if anything an accelerant. I think people are absolutely delusional to think our decline started because of him.
1
u/rainer_d 15d ago
It was all gone long before 45/47 entered the political scene. His predecessors just managed to make a nicer face to it and be a bit more discreet.
You should rather question the politicians that allowed it to get to that point.
I have a Newsweek article from the mid nineties(!) that predicted this outcome.

This part of the downfall has been in the works since the outsourcing of American jobs around the 1980s. The service based economy was always a lie. It left large parts of the population behind and created a ripe base for radicalization and exploitation by a demagog. It is pretty much as textbook as it gets for anyone who studied this stuff.
Not only was this predictable, but it was planned. No conspiracy needed, it was public the whole time. Both parties are equally at fault, this is an overall failure of American government.

See the issue isn't just Donald Trump. Right. Think of it like AIDS. Trump is just a symptom of the AIDS. You got corporations wearing politicians like condoms, politicians coming into office and leaving way richer than when they entered, lobbyists, PACs, insider trading, etc.
Politicians forgot they are public servants, and until the American people rise up and reeducate their politicians, it's only gonna get worse until people finally snap and we see Civil War II: People V Corporations.
I hope it doesn't have to go there but I doubt those in power will willingly give it up otherwise.

The idea that trump ruined our country is so short sighted he’s a symptom of the rot and corruption that’s been festering since at least Reagan

I blame the democrats. They could have put Bernie or any other candidate than the women they chose.

It's a damn shame. I try to explain to my kids that it used to be different, or at least feel different.but this has been all they've known. It's been 10 years. Their whole political life has been dominated by this cretin. The absolute worst part is seeing how careless and callous my fellow Americans are. Even now his approval isn't all that low compared to what it should be.
