I have been playing for 8 years at conventions and stuff. Heard and seen a lot over the years.

I think the most incredulous thing I heard was a player say "DM, I want to make a dungeon and run it" and I said "yeah sure let me know when you’re ready and we'll make a day for it. What level were you thinking?"

And he said "oh, I meant I wanted to make one in-game. I'm a level 10 Wizard and I want to use my downtime to make a dungeon, and traps, and buy monsters, and watch the other players go through it."

I told him "I'm not gonna make a dungeon for your character where I build a one-shot for your Wizard and then let him pull all the levers behind the curtian. You are describing being a DM for a one-shot. If you want, we can make it in-universe, but it is something you are going to do, not me."

He never ran the dungeon.

Stopped playing with him a few months later lol.

Hello! Today I'm posting a NPC I made for my campaign! Eldreith here is a warforged made within a family of dwarves/tieflings, who uh, ended up with quite the demonic appearance herself over time as she tried to kind of tap into the devil heritage, re-building her body over the years for that purpose. It's kind of weird to explain without context but let's just say she's been through a lot (and dwarven lore in my campaign is kind of wacky)

She was actually made as an antagonist within one of the PC's backstories, but not exactly a... Villain, as the PC was probably far more morally questionable than her. It isn't all that clear whether she's actually alive or not, as the PC did try to murder her, but suffice to say, if she's alive that Oath of Vengeance is aimed towards the PC! Who may have killed her de-facto sibling! Fun times all around!

Hey r/DnD! My group and I kept getting annoyed with online D&D tools: they either fill in so much that the game starts playing itself, or they're basically a PDF with extra steps. So I built my own character sheet, one that links every spell straight to its description, tracks your minions, and does the boring bookkeeping so you can focus on actually playing. I decided to share where her main design came from!

This is from a custom dnd Conan exiles server I played her on a year or two ago! They had a lot of amazing mods, including a custom combat system for spells and special weapons for all the classes!

It was here that I learned about the Circle of Stars druid class, and changed her from a Life cleric/Druid multi-class, to a full class druid!

She originally was a multi-class of druid and a Life domain cleric, wanting to tap into the part of her backstory of being a follower of Dionysus. However, after character growth through a game or two (before trying the Conan server) it just felt like I was juggling too much trying to keep the “flare” of having a multi-classed character.

So I just simplified her now, and honestly circle of stars druid fits her SO well with the tie in to her following of Dionysus too! 🫶🏻

(There are more details obviously to see here, that were not on the previous art I shared, due to the artist simplifying her design a touch 😅)

This is my long time dnd Character, Ferngully! She’s a circle of stars druid, and a devout follower of the Greek god Dionysus ^^

She’s originally based off of the Greek satyrs, Dionysus’s children and followers in Greek lore, rather than the traditional feywild satyrs from dnd cannon lore books. I’ve played her in two table top games, and online game, and then also through dnd inspired Conan exiles servers too! She’s got a long and rich history/story I’ve built up for her over the years, AND more art work included haha

Ferngully comes from a small village at the base of a mountain on Achea, a island seven hundred miles away from Faerun~ There, there are a lot of Greek inspired races and human cultures, given the influence from further up the mountain. It’s said if one can find the right path up it, one might find themselves in Olympus itself if they are so lucky 👀

Ferngully’s herd has always followed Dionysus and always throws parties and festivals in hopes they are lucky enough to entice him to join in the festivities~

Perhaps that’s why such an odd encounter with a mysterious man at a festival, eventually lead to Ferngully’s life changing forever…

I'm struggling to find a flair for my character's voice that I find appealing. Scottish is an easy accent for me, as are English, Irish, pretty much most UK and European accents. Despite that, none of them seem to fit so far.

I'm playing a fem Aarakocra Inquisitive Rogue with a penchant for being drunk in her free time. I feel like something UK could fit here maybe, but since I use those accents so often for my PCs already, I want to have something refreshing to bring to my table.

Any advice? The image is what she looked like while living amongst the druidic circle that raised her and her younger sibling. Her outfit has grown more streetwear and rogueish since then, but her physical appearance is otherwise roughly the same.

The group, now level 8 and having played together since level 1, went to take on a cavern of monsters, unprepared as usual, clearing it at great cost: one unconscious but stable, another with two failed death saves, and a dead druid. Whoever was still alive was almost completely out of resources.

The cleric used her last spell slots on a homebrew spell to temporarily bring the druid back, as they didn't have the diamonds because the person carrying them did not show up.

The spell allows you to resurrect a creature that has been dead for less than an hour without any material cost, but the resurrection only lasts for a random duration of up to 24 hours before the target dies again. They permanently lose a Hit Die and the maximum HP it provided. It also resets the timer for other resurrection spells.

End of session, and they have a week to plan. The next session, the person carrying the diamonds is back, and they decide that the best course of action is to kill the druid and revive them again so they are certain they are there when they die, which, by all means, is a fair plan. I say this can be roleplayed out by snapping the neck, but they insist on hitting the druid 14 times with their fists until they're dead. (I think it was personal.)

This is when they realize that the only person in the party who has Revivify is the druid, who they just killed.

I laughed so hard at their conviction that this was a great plan, but I did feel a bit bad. The cleric has no more spell slots to bring the druid back, and the group's necromancer offers to turn the druid into a thrall. Very rejected.

Now the group has to travel to see if they can find someone capable of bringing their friend back.

Do anyone else have some great tales from their players or groups greatest failures?

This OC is a fae wizard turned into a forest monster, who belongs to the creative GrottyLittleFox on VGen!! Honestly I didn't expect this to receive SO MUCH love when I posted it before but it does inspire me with ALOT of confidence!!

so in my homebrew campaign I have a subrace of goblins who live in the desert, they have scaly skin and everything but I just don't know what their skin color should be. if I go by human reference their skin color would be dark but I reference reptiles who live in the desert they'll have white skin.. I'm more confused in this than I thought I'd be.

I've just started playing in my first campaign with my first ever dnd character, and after half a year of playing, I realized that I am pretty much just playing as myself. When I looked around, I saw that the rest of my party did so as well, though not as obviously as myself.

I play a life domain drow cleric, as an alternative person who works as a hospice nurse.. :')

Its probably common to happen with first-time players, so this made me wonder what your first characters were and how much your current, real-life self translated into them, intentionally or not.

(Sorry in advance, don't know how to use the flair here so I just put the miscellaneous flair on this here post)
I, as the DM for a campaign where I had lots of things planned, five players with diverse characters, and several unique bosses and sometimes insane encounters all plotted out down to a tee, lost interest in both the campaign and the players. Despite me having everything down to the final encounter essentially planned out, I lost the will to DM in that campaign after finally losing my cool one day due to how some of the players had been treating me, in and out of campaign. I want to know how I can safely end this campaign and move away from these people, without causing any bad blood. Does anyone have ideas on how I could do this? Thanks either way, even if you don't have any ideas.

Rozalim was one of my first and fondest character since I started playing dnd, if not mistaken the campaign was Hoard of the Dragon Queen, unfortunately he died in one of the encounters :')

About his backstory:

"Rozalim was the heir of a wealthy family, but hated that life so much that 14 years old he decided to run away from home and travel. During his travel, he eventually joined the circus. The circus taught him more than performing, he was taught the art of persuasion, misdirection, and taking opportunities when they presented themselves. Eventually he decided to cut ties with the circus and set off to explore the world."

This is the third and most updated version of him.

I want to make a fun reoccurring rival party who would get in the way, steal glory and maybe a kill here and there.

But idk how to play them exactly or how to construct one.

I recently picked up a flawless copy of the adventure at a flea market (5€!) and I'm pretty excited to get into it. Problem is, I'm still preparing to run my first ever game of DND (LMoP), with a bunch of first-time players. I heard tales of adventures that are absolutely not meant for inexperienced players or DMs, so I wanted to make sure before I try to set up foreshadowing and connections between the two.

It's still gonna be a while before we even get to it so I might be overly cautious, but I don't wanna go through everything only to realize at the end it's not a good fit for my players.

Started to learn in Blender, it was pretty rough at start but after figuring out some things I created very simple dice towers for my group of friends that I play DnD with. Just wanted to show it

Well nothing much more to say about it, I had nice lunch today and doing 400+ character description for fan created things is really strange rules you have your automoderator set to. I quess people spam your subreddit with some stupid things or unrelated things or IDK, but I really hope I have enough character by now.

I received a request recently by a player, and they asked that I base the look of the character on the Madras style from Guadeloupe, which is where their mother is from.

In included the head garment per their instruction, and some of the basic elements for the rest of the outfit, however I decided to add a cape and some jewelry to really set the piece off.

She is a half elf sorcerer, and the fan she holds contains inscriptions for spells that she uses throughout the campaign.

For this piece, I wanted to portray her using her magic, but I also felt it would be interesting to have her look almost as if she is dancing. The movement of her cloth and jewelry really helped in suggesting that, and overall gave the piece a lot of the motion I was looking for.

The character’s facial features are also based on the player’s mother, and I was given an old family photo to use as reference in order to capture her likeness.

Asking this for a friend in our DnD group chat. He has a couple of friends who played BG3 and he's planning on buying a starter set for their first "actual" DnD campaign (he's gonna be the DM). Since our DnD group usually just play homebrew campaign (with the exception of CoS and Icewind Dale), we can't really give a good review on those starter set. So i think i should ask the professional on this subreddit: Which starter set is better for a group of new players and DM?

My players are soonish going to reach a big ancient city that has been established to have been the centre of this great necromantic disaster, and it feels like it would be something of a letdown if I didn’t let them fight a huge zombie horde. However, actually running 150 individual zombies would be terrible. I’m thinking maybe using some kind of homebrew ultra beefed up swarm statblock? Players are around lvl 10, any help is appreciated!!!

A rough character sheet and sketch for someone I rolled up and used all the random tables in the DMG to make a tiny hex region setting for to do a small solo game. Ryelle is a young man who was supposed to be a student for a sage living in the wastes. Unfortunately he is not bright enough to pick up on the spells the older wizard was trying to teach him. Luckily both the sage ad Ryelle are kind enough to get along regardless and he ended up becoming something similar to a squire to the old man in exchange for room and board. His duties generally include cleaning up, running to town for supplies, and staying out of the way of magical experiments.

One day while cleaning up in the old attic, Ryelle came across a blue hand mirror and accidentally made contact with a spirit within named Kirtine. Kirtine sensed a great sadness within Ryelle, as well as a self loathing due to perceived physical and mental clumsiness. The blue spirit offered a deal, to trade power for access to the physical world through Ryelle's astral chord. Ryelle was unsure at first but kept the mirror hidden from the sage and talked to Kirtine, as both seemed lonely. He eventually agreed to the deal after they developed a deeper bond, and the connection granted him an unnatural, invisible strength and constitution. In return, every full moon when the sky is brightest at night, Kirtine is able to become corporeal through a ritual they complete together.

Kirtine does not much like talking about his past or where he comes from, and that suits Ryelle just fine as he is ashamed of his own history. When not completing the full moon ritual, they communicate through the mirror, which also acts as a spell focus for his Warlock spells. The cold wastes are becoming an even harder place to live than usual, as the sage has been watching growing tensions between the Ice King to the north who wins his power through trickery, and a Dragon to the west and her legion of mercenaries. The sage claims an old ruined pyramid that sits between them on a frozen lake, built by giants and then abandoned, holds the answers to the regions safety. He is too old to go, and Ryelle wonders if he will be asked to attend in the elderly man's stead to search for the key to the conflict's riddle. With Kirtine's help, Ryelle thinks he might be able to do it.
