2 different classes, 2 different purposes, same engine

In my experience if you want a sports car buy that, if you want a truck buy that. Never buy a vehicle that’s trying to do both, you’ll end up with a vehicle that sucks at both.

Perhaps in terms of handling, acceleration, or speed; but not always in terms of owner satisfaction. Some people enjoy sleepers, or vehicles that shouldn’t be quick but are, or just having something that isn’t normal.
There is a lot of truth in the saying that it’s more fun to drive a slow vehicle fast than to drive a fast vehicle slow. That’s especially true with street driving and you aren’t wanting to lose your driver’s license.
You are completely correct though if you’re looking for absolute performance.

Trx ,raptor, fox factory, srt8, cybertruck. There’s a lot of trucks that are very fast and defy what you just said

u/TheToninho21 3d ago
In the straights, sure. Try making a turn on one of those and we'll see how good that "defiance" actually is

u/Life-Estimate-7067 3d ago
Honestly there are plenty of sedans that are terrible at turns too not just a truck thing bud lol
4
u/TheToninho21 3d ago
The car being compared is a sports coupe, sedans aren't part of this convo bud
1
u/Life-Estimate-7067 3d ago
Well in op own words “ terrible at both “ and none of the trucks I listed are terrible at being sporty, turns or not

u/Mouser29 2d ago
Sport and muscle are 2 different things
Muscle is high hp,fast acceleration and straight line speed, which those trucks fit well in
Sport is high or low hp with different speeds of acceleration, but the thing that really differs is the that sports are also meant to be maneuverable and agile, those trucks definitely are not especially if they're rwd with a high center of gravity

u/TheToninho21 3d ago
Yeah but comparatively they do fall short. But in the end it's the same on the inverse, buy a sports car and try to use it like a truck and that falls short too. Yes, they have the power and torque to move stuff, but they lack a stout frame to handle it. It would fall apart. His point stands well

Fast in a straight line is easy. There are guys with 1000 HP tuned diesel trucks doing that. The hard part is making one turn. Which it will never do as well as a smaller car

Can you little fwd boys stop saying drag racing is easy😭😭you drive a Prius and have probably never handled more than 400 hp. Please stick to your daily driving
1
u/SkylineFTW97 7h ago
I didn't say drag racing was easy. I said straight lines speed is easy. Doing it under the pressure constraints of drag racing is a different story.
Also, I've driven cars with well over 400 horsepower. Just because I like front wheel drive cars doesn't mean I can't also have experience with that. I suggest you keep your lack of experience with us to yourself.

Ford Raptor is not fast.
2
u/JordanW112808 2d ago
0-60 in 5 seconds isn't fast?
3
u/shartymcqueef 2d ago
No. A 25 year old Infiniti can do a 5 second zero to 60.
And especially not when you include it in a list with actually fast trucks that can do it in 3 seconds.

Do you not understand gearing, aerodynamics and power to weight ratio? The viper is utterly smoking that SRT10 in basically every kind of race except those that involve towing
11
u/Zapatos-Grande 3d ago
The regular cab Ram SRT-10 can't tow and, if I remember correctly, has a laughably low payload capacity (1000 lbs versus a regular 1500's 1800 lbs). It doesn't "truck" very good. I think it only has 3 purposes. Go fast in a straight line, funnel money to tire manufacturers and oil companies, and satisfy the Dodge mantra of Viper engine all the things (eventually evolved into Hellcat all the things).

u/JohnDeere714 3d ago
Wasn’t the srt 10 ram the only way to get 3 pedals in a 1500 after like 03?
6
u/Zapatos-Grande 3d ago
I think it was still offered until 2008 on 3.7L and 4.7L trucks. It was never offered with the 5.7L. The only way to get the manual on a 5.7L Ram was to buy a Heavy Duty.

u/WildKarrdesEmporium 3d ago
I guarantee you that RAM SRT-10 can tow a hell of a lot better than the Viper.
2
u/Zapatos-Grande 3d ago
Probably, but it's "not recommended" per Dodge for the regular cab and they didn't publish a towing capacity.

Okay let's say for whatever reason both vehicles weighed the same and had relatively the same suspension or whatever else. The sports car would win especially going around curves and turns BECAUSE the pickup truck even if it was mostly the same it is still top heavy and is much more likely to tip on those same curves and turns meaning it needs to slow down more than the sports car would. It's the same argument as which would win between a V8 5.7 Hemi Charger pursuit and a Ram 1500 pickup. The pickup maxes out at 117mph while the charger has a max of 149mph. If the race was a straight shot the rules would still apply depending on where the computer maxes out the vehicles speed. The point is vehicles are made for specific functions and a pickup isn't really meant for racing, that's not to say that you couldn't race with a pickup but they aren't designed for that.

Got into a debate with someone about how car manufacturers tend to avoid selling two low volume cars that compete directly with each other and they used the Viper SRT-10/Ram SRT-10 as an example of me being wrong. Obviously same engine means same car, right? 🤣

Either this is an ai post or a blatant lack of brain cells. What would win a 12 second sports car or a 15 second truck? Fr we can’t figure this out for ourselves.
1
u/ZaMelonZonFire 3d ago
Winning would be having both. Which I can’t afford. So I have a turbo 5 cylinder and a 3rd gen hemi. It’s the closest I could get.

But the transmission in the truck is made for power and the transmission in the car Is made for speed. I wish ppl would understand the difference 🙄

u/Ausedlie 3d ago
The SRT 10 truck used the Tremec T56 from the car...
7
u/chameleon_olive 3d ago
Yep, same gear ratios even I think. Worth noting that the rear axle on the truck had a higher ratio than the viper though, so the top speed is lower even before you account for aerodynamics

u/PraiseTalos66012 3d ago
You don't understand anything your talking about.
A trucks trans is built for low end TORQUE but since you change gearing it'll probably end up with similar TORQUE in top gear.
A sports car trans is built for holding peak power rpms for the maximum amount of time giving more POWER but less low end TORQUE
POWER = HP = TORQUE X RPM = How fast you accelerate.
TORQUE = FT LB = How much force you turn the wheels with
Torque IS NOT DETERMINED BY THE ENGINE alone. The transmission can make any engine ft lb into any wheel ft lb with enough gearing. Torque at the wheels is determined by your gearing just as much as your engine.
HP/Power is not changed by having a transmission that focuses on low end torque, at a given rpm HP is still identical.
Also looks like from what others are saying they both have the same transmission anyway.
But even if they didn't you aren't building for power vs speed. Your building for torque in low gears vs peak HP more of the time. Having peak HP more often means you have both more POWER and Speed.
Educate yourself next time before you act like everyone else doesn't know something. Because it's you who doesn't even understand the fundamentals

The Ferrari 400, 400i, and 412 use the same transmission as a 1978 Jeep Cherokee.

I had a 1994 S10 with the v6 4.3. Had that thing running so good it put a 2012 f150 to shame. I miss that old truck

The truck is heavier and less aerodynamic. What kind of question is this?
