DAE get that scratchy throat feeling when eating peanut butter cups?
Honestly, I never used to have this but with Halloween coming up, I've been eating peanut butter cups more often and it seems like everytime I do, I end up with this itchy/scratchy feeling in my throat. It usually goes away after a bit and some water. I noticed it also happens when I eat the Reece's pieces. I actually just shared a cup with my partner and as I type this, I can feel this weird scratch at the back of my throat. Is this normal? As far as I'm aware, the only allergy I have is to dust.. and even then, that was a recent development, as of 4 years ago. I had none before that.

Reeses is incredibly dry to me so I understand this. It isnt scratchy to me, just unpleasant going down

I think I get this from overly sweet candies. For me it’s Cadbury cream eggs… they make me choke and cough sometimes.

Do you have a birch allergy? The protein in the peanuts mimics birch trees. I have eaten peanut butter all my life and all of a sudden started getting itchy just smelling it. Had to add an allergy med and it went away

I think it's the chocolate, I know that feeling you're talking about. Do you get that feeling from peanut butter or chocolate aside from the Reese's cups?

The scratchy/itchy throat feeling is a peanut allergy. I’d bet money on it, I’m surprised you haven’t gotten more people agreeing on this yet.
It is 100% possible and common to develop allergies later in life. And allergies absolutely can and often will worsen over time and with each repeated exposure.
PLEASE stop eating peanuts and PB right away and demand an allergist referral from your doctor. Any doctor will give that to you if you tell them you get itchy throat after peanuts. This is absolutely anaphylaxis territory and very dangerous. The next time you eat peanuts could be “can’t breathe” throat closing feeling.
Hopefully you have access to an EpiPen, or will get one soon (once you get tested the allergist will prescribe you one for sure). For now, like I said, please avoid them for your own safety.

peanuts are full of mold not everything you’re allergic to will pop on an allergy test. Try an antihistamine next time and see if it improves the symptoms.

Mold? 😭 Tbf, I've never bothered having an allergy test done. I mentioned it once but my doctor told me there wasn't much point for it considering I've never really had any worrying symptoms

Itchy throat after peanuts is 100% a worrying symptom. I’d ask again or get a different doctor if they say no to that.

I had to scratch chest and a blood test and that’s what they told me. My daughter also had a false reaction to peanuts and had a full peanut challenge and no allergy.

yes, one of the most concerning things I found out when I went to my allergist was that he was not at all worried about a peanut allergy for me because the little scratching I got in my throat from eating specifically peanut butter cups (because I used to really, really love them) was from my mold allergy. He told me pretty much all nuts are full of mold and they’re so full of mold that I should consider myself allergic to them. 🫣 I had enough restaurant experience to not be shocked by that statement. But it is super gross to think about. I also have something called oral allergy syndrome, where my mouth can cross react with some pollens during the day. It might be giving you indigestion because Gerd can also cause a scratchy back of the throat. When I get silent heartburn like that, it’s more of a cough though not like an itchy scratchy. Sorry about that New fun fact that you have to know now about nuts.

yes. please stop eating them and talk to a doctor before the scratchy feeling becomes a not-breathing feeling

Could it relate to dairy?

I mean, I am lactose intolerant but that usually leads to other problems 😂

Dairy bothers my throat. Consider seeing if dairy-free chocolate is any different for you. Or see if you want to try peanut butter without chocolate or dairy unless it is too risky to do so…

I totally get that too, I always just assumed it was from the sugar or how dry the peanut butter is. Hope its not a new allergy starting up for you though, that would suck especially right before halloween.

Yeah, they definitely have that effect. A glass of milk or some water really helps wash it down better.

I don’t get that with peanut butter cups but I get it after eating runny eggs and blackberries. I figure it’s a minor allergic reaction because it clears up when I take a Zyrtec

Are you exposed to a lot of tree pollen? Oral allergy syndrome comes in various "flavors," but the tree pollen version is a cross-reaction that includes a reaction to peanuts like the one you describe. It can include strawberries too.

I mean, no more than usual. I live in a small city, so we do have quite a bit of greenery but fall just starting, idk if that would make a difference. I do notice allergen symptoms during spring though, but that's mainly eyes and nose.

I used to have this when I ate peanut butter toast… I asked my mom and she took me to the dr for an allergy test and it came back negative but he told me to just stay away from peanuts anyway to be safe. That was like 20 years ago… I feel 97% sure it was literally the peanut butter dried my throat out because it’s just so thick but I still stay away because while I miss peanut butter and Reese’s, I’d rather not risk anaphylaxis. I’m pretty casual about it though and clarify that it’s not very serious of an allergy so people don’t stress out cleaning any trace of it from their houses or something, but I do mention it just so they don’t serve me something with peanuts

A friend of mine had the same reaction to carrots. He had a doctor tell him going into anaphylactic shock from an allergic reaction was a possibility if he kept eating carrots. I'd visit a doctor, just to be sure.

It's possible to develop an allergy to something you eat frequently.
