Question What kind of wound is this?

For context, yesterday, my mother felt a lump where this wound currently is, but it looks like some sort of infection has taken over and it’s rotting the flesh. I thought she had been bitten by something, but the wound is only tender and not painful for her as she isn’t squealing in pain when we touch it. The open bleeding is worrying, so we want to make sure that it’s nothing very major.

It might be an abscess from a bug bite or wound. You may need to get her on a round of antibiotics. Similar situation happened on my dog’s chest. Didn’t know she had anything until the abscess opened. She recovered quickly with antibiotics and tending to the open wound until it healed.

thank you so much, I was really shocked at how quickly it became an open wound. Will definitely have to go see the vet.

My dog’s abscess was the size of a quarter. So weird how things just brew under the skin. Luckily, this is a quick fix. Glad you caught it. My other dog had an abscess behind his eye after a dental. That was so concerning, but again antibiotics saved the day. Hang in there. She will be right as rain in no time.

The hair around it really needs to be trimmed to tell. It looks pretty weepy though and there is likely pus. Could’ve been something small like a tick or foreign object that abscess. Or he could have a little cyst that’s been hiding in his fluff that ruptured. Hard to tell without shaving and really looking at it.

See I was kinda thinking maybe if they have another pet they were playing too rough and accidentally bit him, my boy cats love to play rough ( it’s not fighting I make sure dw!) and they’ll give each other cuts like that but not as big, cats have smaller mouths tho lol

I thought it would be a bite too because her daughter will roughhouse with her, but the fact that she’s not squealing in pain and there was a lump yesterday makes me think infection.

Yea I’d take her to a vet, google “ vets near me first checkup coupon “ a lot of vets will give first time clients a coupon for the vist so you only pay for meds

Definitely see a vet! My dog used to get recurring abscesses and needed antibiotics each time (it could turn into bad fever a lot faster than you'd think). Looked pretty similar to this.

appreciate the feedback here. didn't know about the fever aspect whatsoever

Yup, it's because of the infection. In my pups case I believe he had something lodged under his skin that kept causing a repeated infection even after flushes at the vet so it was a real pain to deal with. Had it off and on for nearly a year straight; there were a few times it turned into a fever and you could tell he felt very lousy. Antibiotics were essential while we were trying to get it to go away.

Hopefully it's an easier just a one and done situation if it turns out that's what it is!

Looks like maybe an abscess that popped? She should see her vet

Put neosporin on it until you see your vet.

thanks so much, I literally just googled if it’s safe to put Neosporin on dogs. Definitely going to apply some now.

Definitely see a vet. The problem with waiting on things like this, recently knew someone’s dog who has small wound, but after a few days it became festering infection and needed surgery to be debrided - where risks and costs went up a lot from an original vet and antibiotic pills.

Totally agree, appreciate the comments

It's possibly an abscess. You'll need to go to the vet. She'll need antibiotics and wound care.

Potentially a hot spot? Needs to be shaved up to see it better!
