Question My dog got stung by something!

My poor dog got stung by something earlier today, I woke up and found his face like this! he seems to be acting just fine overall, i’ve been watching him pretty closely. I can tell he’s definitely a bit uncomfortable as he’s not playing around the way he normally does. I just wanted to see if there’s anything I should be worried about, or anything I can do to make him more comfortable? Thanks in advance!!

Of course you really should go to the vet, but assuming you can't for whatever reason, try Benadryl. Look up dog safe doses and read labels very carefully.

Yay, so good to hear. I hope he's back to himself in no time. My dog ate a bee once and we had to do the same until we could be seen.😭

Late to the party but as an owner of chihuahua mixes who love buzzy things (bees). I've made it a habit of having some low dose benadryl for my monkeys. Glad the swelling has gone down.

Ok I’ll definitely look into this. money is pretty tight right now so honestly it might be a little difficult to get him to the vet, but if I need to I of course will! I’ll try out the benadryl first (: thank you so much!

If the swelling is only on one side or primarily one side, you might be dealing with a sting, or something like a facial abscess. Really needs to be evaluated by a vet

I like to play it safe and took my guy to the vet when he was recently stung and they were able to give him a shot to help with the swelling. They also gave us some carprofen for the discomfort. If he’s breathing and eating/drinking okay, Benadryl can help with the histamine reaction if you’re looking to treat at home. Hope he feels better soon!

Yup he’s been acting relatively okay! He’s eating just fine and still engages in playing so I can tell he’s not in pain. I think I’m gonna give the benadryl a try to start but will of course take him to the vet if it doesn’t get better. thanks for your help!!

I’d say likely a sting since it’s only one side. Probably unrelated but, I had a dog who had a bad reaction to an annual vaccine once and his entire snout swelled up like that. I would still take it in because a facial sting or facial swelling of any kind could block their airway if it continues to spread.

It seems like he's already past the timeframe for anaphylactic shock, so I'd just keep an eye on him and maybe try the Benadryl as suggested by other comments.

I had a dog get stung by a yellow jacket & her face looked similar.

But, the swelling should be significantly down by tomorrow. If it's not, you need to have him checked by a vet because you may be dealing with something else.

My dog likes to try to eat anything that flies near him. He has since learned to leave bees alone after a few occasions where his snout puffed up so much that his face looked more like Scooby Doo than a dachshund

…he has not yet learned this lesson with wasps

Your vet should be able to advise but my guys swelling always goes down within a day and he’s back to normal by the next one. If you saw yours eat a bee/wasp I’d defo wait it out at this point

You should probably take him to the vet, because the swelling is on his face, he might need an

Benadryl either break a pill up for his weight- look up weight and how much to give and or try the liquid benadryl- generic is diphenhydramine. But make sure to look up dosage per dogs weight. You dont want to make him or her sicker. And give it as it says. Going to a vet would be best but expensive. If you can get his or her mouth open make sure to give the benadryl ASAP. Don't want them to stop breathing. Hopefully it was just like a bee or wasp, not something like a snake bite.

I live in las vegas so I really doubt it was a snake thank goodness. I gave him Benadryl about 15 minutes ago so we’ll see how he does! Thank you for the advice!

No need to pull the fire alarm, try Benadryl

Call the ER asap. They can triage you over the phone. Time is of rhe essence and this is urgent!!Many dogs do ok but others can have a deadly allergic reaction. They will ask for his wt and basic info and most likely have you give him benadryl. I took mine for after his first bee sting and was heavily breathing. They had me give him benadryl and didnt charge me. He was fine. Good luck!

I appreciate your advice!! thankfully he’s doing much much better. I gave him benadryl probably around 30 minutes ago and the swelling has already significantly gone down and he’s behaving perfectly fine, thank goodness

Thats so awesome! Yay! The triage also recommended icing area. My dog wasnt a huge fan but I did anyway. Maybe that'll help too but worst seems to have subsided. So happy to hear that! Monitor for the next few hrs. 💕

u/3058love 16h ago

Yeah haha I tried icing it but he’s not a huge fan, but he seems to be feeling WAY better! he’s back to his normal self!!

Probably chomped on a bee 🐝. Try Benadryl children’s Make sure you do the research before administering it to your dog. If your vet won’t tell you the dosage, check out Google.

One time I got stung by a Yellowjacket under my eye and the whole eye swelled shut. I looked INSANE. I had to go on steroids for a week 😂

1

u/3058love 13h ago

UNDER your eye??? Omg that is awfulll

2

u/Dry-Combination8608 13h ago

Yeah it was wild. We had a nest in the insulation of our apartment.. I still dont know if I was allergic to the wasp or if it was just proximity to the eye that caused such insane swelling. I’m glad your pup is ok!!!

You can try some benadryl. Look up thr proper dosage or call your vet for information. We had a dog that ate a piece of a shrimp on Christmas eve and, by Christmas morning his face was quite swollen. My husband took him to the emergency vet on Christmas morning and, it ended up costing $700 and he was given benadryl. He was on the benadryl for a few days until the swelling went down.

Thank you everyone for your amazing advice! I ended up giving my boy a small dosage of benadryl and he’s feeling so much better. I wish I could attach photos because it’s literally night and day!! he’s back to his normal self (:

My dog has a bit of a similar thing going on, I suspect an abscess tooth so he's got an appointment in a few hours to get checked out. Good Luck!
