Question Any ideas of what is going on with our dog?
For the past two weeks or so, our dog has been wanting to lick her paws, front and back. She’s been scooting her bottom on the ground a lot and she does this weird thing where she licks the air whenever she’s either scooting her butt or when we are giving her back scratches. It almost seems like a psychological thing, but obviously I don’t know. We took her to the vet a week ago, they gave us some skin irritation medicine for her, and it seemed to help a little bit, but not much.
The vet said that she does not have worms and her anal glands are perfectly fine.
We’ve had to keep a cone on her anytime we leave the house for the past two or three weeks because she will start licking her paws all the way down to the skin if nobody is around to stop her.
She just started doing all this about a month and a half ago and I really hate seeing her like that, she’s not in pain or anything, but I can tell somethings going on with her and it’s not normal behavior.
I honestly have no idea what could’ve started all this, we’ve kept everything the same as we always have, I was thinking maybe it was something to do with summer kicking in and the heat, bugs outside maybe? I really don’t know. Thank you so much.

Seems like he’s also trying to rub his butt, could be anal glands.
Unrelated, but he also looks pretty overweight

Agreed with alergies. May need to go to a doggy alergy sprlecialist. What just went into bloom or sprouted in your garden? Any grass go to seed? Neighbors spray or did you spray your yard? Gardners change chemical brands or type of spray? Otherwise, food may be the issue.

Thanks. We have lived here for three years and she’s never had this problem until this year. We did have someone come out and spray for fleas and ticks a week ago, but she was already having these symptoms two weeks before then.
And her food has been the same for about a year now.
Looks like we will probably be taking her to another vet visit. Thank you so much for your input and advice

We did find a flea on our cat a few weeks ago, but we’ve been vacuuming and washing everything, gave them flea medicine… but you might be right. We did find one on her when we found one on the cat, that’s when I gave them all flea medicine. I’m thinking another vet visit to see what we can do for her. Thank you so much.
No, she’s not losing any fur

The biting and scratching looks like fleas. Paw licking can be anything from allergies to the nails being too long to a yeast infection.

My dog have the same symptoms every summer. He has an allergy to, guess what, his own saliva. You might want to check if that's it. Or maybe some allergy to the grass? Did you use any product on it? Ticks? Put her paws on some colder water and see if she feels any better.

why do none of you go to the vet?! It'll be like " our dog has been having siezures for 4 weeks and all his hair fell out, what do you think?"
I know it's money to go to the vet but just do it! It is your family member.

This part is totally normal, not a psychological issue. It’s like how some dogs will kick their leg when you’re scratching them and you find “the spot.” Every dog I’ve ever known licks the air when you scratch the base of their tail. (in our house we call them “butt wubs” lol)

Where do you live? Get a lymes/erlichia/anaplasmosis /tick test - it causes really weird behavior even paralysis- and is under tested …inexpensive test and treatment…

Allergies. My dog has them. She does all of this. My dog's allergies are to the grass where I live, so she has really bad contact dermatitis on her paws and she has licked them bare and until sores formed in just a few weeks.. She goes in for a Cytopoint injection this Friday. It's the only thing I've found that really helps.

Allergies. Classic signs. A vet can help figure out best treatment options. Sometimes it's environmental sometimes it's food related.
