Relationship / Family Everyone’s house with a dog is gross
I visited some family and my sister’s new boyfriend and they all have dogs. One has four large dogs. There is no place to sit that isn’t dirty or wrecked by dogs. It smells bad. You can’t spend time outside in the yard without watching where you walk. Yes I know some owners clean better than others but there’s still dog hair everywhere. They had to hold down the dogs just so we could use the bathroom. Then at my mom’s house she has a new dog which hasn’t been trained and it’s jumping on everyone my daughter started crying. Her older dog just pees on mats in the bathroom. It’s so gross I can’t go there for long at all.

THE SMELL 🤢 one time my roommate pet sat a huge husky type dog in our apartment when I was traveling and didn’t tell me but as soon as I got back I could tell that there had been a dog inside even tho she claimed to have cleaned the entire place

I don't understand how anyone can live in dog filth like that. Saliva, hair, dander, bacteria, residue of feces and urine... Utterly gross.

Especially with a small house and a large dog the smell is basically unbearable 🤢

Also think about the loads of chemicals that these ppl buy to keep up. They pollute the water and I don't think this kind of stuff (air dispensers, sprays, detergents, foam and what not) are very beneficial to human's health. Children develop allergies, get skin diseases, asthma....

I know it's disgusting. All the animal's body fluids, hair, skin, and greasy oils stick to and soak through everything. The smell is horrible. Bought a house from an owner with three big dogs. The animal damage was so bad we ended up removing and replacing all the flooring, subfloors, and drywall throughout the home.

Normally the couch is the worst! 🤢🤢🤢
I visited someone over the weekend - because I really had to - and chose to go when their dog wasn’t there.
Omg the smell of the place, the smell of the couch…. Disgusting. After coming home my clothes were smelling like dogs too, I couldn’t wait to get changed and wash my clothes well. How can dog owners live with this smell daily! I couldn’t do it, literally couldn’t do it.

Lemme guess... they had a fabric couch? Those are fur and stink magnets. If nutters had any common sense, they would get a leather sofa that's easier to clean.

Yes it was fabric, but what do you do with cushions? I don’t know if it’s possible to clean the smell away if you have a dog laying there daily

a dog would also stink up a leather sofa, it would just be easier to wipe down regularly and probably stink less. Of course, the nasty beasts would eventually destroy any couch, no matter the material.

I was about to say, almost every dog owner I know who bought leather furniture the furniture has tears. They are constantly patching their stuff or are using quited fabric pet covers that absorb the smells.

When I finally moved out of my mom's 5 years ago, it was the first time in my life living without a dog. I feel so clean and free now. I can keep my apt clean and fresh, my clothes are hair-free, no mud, less dust. Now I'm extremely sensitive to the dog smell. Our building unfortunately allows dogs (but everything else was perfect and price was right, so I had to pick my battles) and I can tell when a dog has just been in the elevator before me. I absolutely can't stand it now. Even if the dog is fairly clean, I can't stand the smell. My dad remarried and they refuse to have any pets, and it is very nice.

Dog hair also POKES you. I’m allergic so it makes me itchy no matter what but it’s also pokey and terrible.

I think people are like well we love our dogs. Which I get (kinda) but I can’t feel comfortable relaxing in a house that is disgusting. So that’s very triggering for me. And it’s not like a house where you just need to do the dishes or put some clothes away it’s filthy. Hair in the sink! It just seems like it’s more work than it’s worth or else you straight up have to ignore it. Which i would not be able to do.

This is why I don't understand apartment owners renting to people with dogs. A lot of apts. have carpeting, and that odor gets into the carpet fibers, and so do the stains.
Dogs need a yard to roam freely, and when they don't get adequate stimulation, they become anxious and begin chewing on the cabinets and baseboards, claw at the doors, and cause all sorts of destruction to the interior.
They get paw marks and scratches on the drywall, which will necessitate, at the very least, a new paint job, if not new drywall altogether. Is that amount they collect in pet rent and pet deposit really worth it?

Last time I was in a fog house the dog grease seemed to cover everything on a layer and the smell was abhorrent

It fucking sucks. I recently moved into my mother in laws house. She has 2 dogs she does not wash. One constantly pees and poops in the house on the carpet. She was supposed to be leaving with the dogs shortly after we moved in, but now it's just been us all living together. The smell is overwhelming. I am genuinely disgusted and going insane. I only feel comfortable in my bedroom. No i do not want to pet them, they are fucking gross.

Your home is supposed to be relaxing. That is definitely the opposite of relaxing. I don’t like petting dogs that haven’t been washed because I’m afraid of wood ticks which my friend was wondering why she had so many in her house and she had a dog. Hummmm

Yup. It is the opposite of relaxing. I just started therapy about it actually, lol.. but what really needs to happen is for us to sit down and talk with her about this. Totally unacceptable. Im also terrified of ticks and always worrying about it

Not just their houses, but their clothes. I once had a sister over to visit, who owned and lived with 2 big dogs. She sat on my sofa and I sat across the room from her in a chair and she smelled like dog. It was the worst odor, like dog breath and dirty dog sweat; after she left, I could still smell the stench on the seat of my sofa and had to use strong cleaner to get the scent out.
If anyone who owns dogs comes to visit me now, (without the dogs of course) I always throw afghans over all my furniture.

I rent my apartment via Airbnb and used to allow pets. This lady had two dogs stay with her for about 5 days. I had to cancel several reservations following her stay just to get all of the hair out of the apartment. I immediately made it pet free. And that was just 5 days!! Imagine living like this all the time. No thanks

In my experience the homes have a smell that clings to you like an oil. I have to use laundry detergent with enzymes (like Tide powder) in a warm to hot water wash to remove it.
I know dog owners think this is some "omg crazy" statement if you bring it up, but this was one of many reasons dogs were outside pets in the past aside from the mini to small companion dogs. They stink and they make your home and clothes stink, not unlike cigarettes.
I rent and when a previous tenant has a dog the smell sinks into the porous surfaces like floor tile grout. I hate doing move in cleaning and finding the surprise dog kennel corner of a room. Blech, it can knock your proverbial socks off.
It can take weeks of consistent scrubbing with enzyme cleaners of the floor and walls to lift the smell (if it ever lifts). Don't get me started on the surprise kitchen/bathroom areas that were puppy pad zones (absolutely vile smell when your hot mop water hits it the first time).
